Sleep Well

Blaine and Kurt have been living together long enough to be able to work around each other's habits. But Kurt's got one that's keeping Blaine up at night, and he feels terrible about it.

Kurt tries not to stay up too late. Blaine has to wake up early in order to arrive at the school to lead early-morning choir practice. He knows that sometimes Blaine oversleeps because he comes home with his hair half-gelled or wearing two different socks.

But Kurt writes best in the wee hours of the night and the bed is so comfortable. And between rehearsals and parent-teacher meetings and lesson plans and pushing manuscripts, sometimes the most time Kurt gets to spend with his husband is at times like this, where Kurt is typing furiously, trying to be quiet and fleshing out ideas before his muse leaves. Blaine always seems to be asleep but Kurt can tell he's not. His breathing is too regular, the curve of his lips is too pronounced and sometimes Kurt catches a hazel glow from behind separated eyelashes.

Kurt keeps his brightness down but his eyes get tired and strained and so he has to turn it up. The keyboard lights up on its own, a reaction to the dark room and he likes the way it looks, so sometimes he leaves it.

Sometimes he'll roll out of Blaine's arms, jostling him as inspiration strikes through a dream. Kurt will reach for his phone and quickly type out the idea, the light directly shinning in Blaine's face.

Kurt's always been a night-owl. Or really, he just doesn't need much sleep to function as long as there is coffee. He's always up before Blaine who likes to sleep, always later than he should. He needs more than coffee to keep him awake, even after more than a full night's sleep, stopping at the café in the morning for a sugary treat.

Breakfast is a solo affair for the both of them because Kurt leaves an hour before Blaine in order to beat rush hour on the subway as he reviews lines or character sketches. Blaine usually cabs to the elementary school to make it just in time for morning bell, unless it's Tuesday Choir Day. Lunch, as well, is usually alone. Blaine will eat in his classroom in case there are kids who don't want to go outside for recess. Sometimes, if he can swing it, Kurt will join him with two travel mugs of coffee. But Kurt mostly works through lunch.

Dinner on the other hand, is spent together. Kurt, who basically makes his own hours, always makes sure to arrive before Blaine who doesn't leave the school until five. He'll prepare dinner, setting the table just as Blaine steps through the door, timing that he's perfected over the decade they've lived together.

Today is a tired day and Kurt knows it's his fault. He'd stayed up later than usual, pushing out the end of a chapter even though it was a Monday and Blaine had choir in the morning. Blaine stumbles through the door, muttering about keys that don't fit into locks and couldn't the kids have just been quiet for one day?

Kurt sighs, dropping the napkins on to the table. He wonders when he'll stop being so selfish and let his husband sleep through the night. He loves Blaine so much, and lack of sleep was surely going to cause an early demise. He makes his way to the door, tugging Blaine's briefcase away and pulling off his jacket at the same time. Blaine groans as Kurt pulls him into his arms, leaning into his shoulder, arms lifting heavily to wrap around Kurt's waist.

"Tired?" Kurt asks, glancing down to see one blue sock and one black and white striped one adorning Blaine's feet.

"That obvious?"

"Your feet clash. And your hair is a mess."

Blaine just pulls Kurt in tighter.

"Coffee?" Kurt offers, but doesn't move even as Blaine nods against his neck. "I'm sorry," he says instead.

Blaine pulls away, hazel eyes lit with confusion and concern. "For what?"

"For keeping you up."

"What do you mean?" Blaine asks slowly.

"Last night. I stayed up way later than usual."

Blaine pulled out of Kurt's arms, walking towards the table. "Did you?" he asked airily. "I didn't notice."

Blaine sat in his chair, spreading the napkin over his lap. Kurt followed him, leaning against the table. "Blaine."

"This looks delicious Kurt. Won't you join me? I'm starving."

"Blaine."

He looked up at Kurt, a soft smile on his face. "Kurt," he replied, his voice dropping playfully.

"Don't make fun," Kurt frowned as Blaine intertwined their fingers. "I feel bad."

"Well, don't," Blaine replied, shrugging. His thumb rubbed against Kurt's knuckles. "Look, I am well aware of your nightly habits. It doesn't bother me."

Kurt drew his lip into his mouth, securing it with his teeth. "Are you sure?"

"I promise."

They sit together, enjoying the meal and a movie afterwards until Blaine cannot keep his eyes open anymore. Kurt joins him in bed, laptop whirring, after he completes his moisturizing routine.

Blaine is rolled away from him, back slowly moving up and down with his breaths. Kurt runs a hand through Blaine's curls, who remains still and Kurt thinks perhaps Blaine's already asleep. Maybe he won't disturb him tonight.

Hours pass and Kurt is still typing furiously. Finally, he glances at the digital clock on his bedside table and it's past two.

He saves, shuts his computer down and checks once more on his bedmate. Blaine's still facing away from him, making little snuffling noises. Kurt smiled, and pressed a kiss to the back of Blaine's head.

He pulled the covers tighter around himself before wiggling and digging down on to the bed. Shutting his eyes, he turned his back on Blaine and curled up.

He felt the bed dip behind him. Blaine's arms came around him, pulling Kurt towards himself. "You were awake this whole time?" Kurt whispered incredulously.

"I'm sure I have no idea what you're talking about. Didn't you hear me snoring?"

"Blaine."

"I love you." Blaine dropped a kiss on Kurt's temple. "Good night."

Kurt sighed, closing his eyes. "Sleep well, Blaine."

I've never read a better domestic!Blurt fic!

Thanks so much!I'm like Kurt too. Something happened while I was uploading it though, this isn't the full story. Check back in a bit to finish it up!

Ugh, this might have been TOO cute! Great job! I'm a total Kurt like that...

Wonder away! It's not that Blaine can't fall asleep when Kurt's awake, it's that he doesn't want to. He's not bothered by the noise, or the light, he just wants to fall asleep while cuddling.

Aww, they're cute. Blaine is rather sweet. ...why doesn't Blaine get ear plugs and a face/sleep mask? Just wondering...
