And so we come to the final chapter...
This is a bittersweet moment for me. I'm happy I can finally share this conclusion with you all, but I'm also sad it is now over. I had the best time writing not only When It's Right, It's Right, but also the prequel, Swipe. Reading everyone's comments frequently made me roll around in a pile of happy feels while giddily giggling.
Thank you so much to everyone who has been there from the beginning, to those who found it along the way, and those who may read this long after it has been posted. I love you all so much for reading, commenting and cheering me on while I find my footing as a writer.
In particular, I need to thank the incomparable quizasvivamos. Beth, you have been there for me since I came looking for a beta for my first fic, and I did not know then what an awesome friend I would gain, alongside a truly kick ass beta. You're amazing and I love you! ♡
I would be remiss if I didn't mention RockItMan and little_escapist as well, whose comments on Swipe kickstarted the inspiration for this sequel. Thank you for enabling me! ;) ♡
Special mention to the members of The Lima Bean discord server, who never fail to cheer, enable and commiserate as needed. I love our little community and writing while chatting with you all is so much more fun than I ever thought it could be. Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY COURT! I hope you like what I did here ;) ♡
And now, on to the final chapter! Happy reading, my loves!
“Poppy, will you tell me a story?” Courtney asked as she climbed into her grandfather’s lap, her curly blond pigtails bouncing with every movement.
“Of course, little love,” Kurt said, wrapping his arm around her. “Which story do you want? The princess and the dragon? Or maybe the one about the cats?”
“No, I want the swipe one!”
“Oh boy, we’d better get your Grandpa in here for that one then. He tells it much better than I do.”
Excited, Courtney stood up in Kurt’s lap, wobbling a bit before Kurt steadied her and prevented any unfortunate movements. She leaned over the sofa's backrest and shouted loudly enough for Blaine to hear it from the other side of the house, “Grandpa! Come quick!”
“Courtney! We don’t shout in the house,” Kurt admonished her as he pulled her back down.
“Sorry, Poppy,” she said before they were interrupted by Blaine running into the room, a half naked baby in one arm and a clean diaper in the other.
“What’s wrong?” he asked, frantically looking around to spot the emergency.
“Nothing, love. Court was just a little too excited for storytime,” Kurt reassured him.
Blaine sighed in relief. “You shouldn’t scare me like that, sweetie. I thought something bad had happened.”
“I’m sorry, Grandpa,” Courtney mumbled with her head hung low. “But Poppy said that you had to tell the story.”
Blaine chuckled and readjusted his hold on the squirming baby. “I’d love to. I’ll just finish changing Logan’s diaper, and we’ll be right back, okay?”
Satisfied, Courtney sat back down and snuggled her way back into Kurt’s arms. “Poppy, why do you call Grandpa love? That’s what you call me.”
“You’re right, I do. Do you know why?” Kurt asked her, lightly running his hand up and down her back.
“Because you love us lots?”
“Exactly. Your grandpa is the big love of my life, and you, your brother, your mom, and your uncle are my little loves. Because I'll love you forever, I'll like you for always, as long as I'm living, my baby you'll be.”
“Hey, that’s from my book! Mommy reads that to me,” Courtney said, looking up at Kurt in wonder.
“That’s right,” Kurt said proudly, leaning down slightly to kiss her hair. “Did you know that Grandpa and I read that book to your mommy and Uncle Jules when they were babies? And now your mommy reads it to you.”
“That’s really cool, Poppy,” she said, laying her head on his chest and stifling a yawn. “Uncle Jules is silly.”
Kurt couldn’t help but laugh at that non sequitur. “Yes, he is. I blame your grandpa for that one.”
Blaine and Logan entered the room then and saved Kurt from having to explain further. He sat down next to them, snuggling into Kurt’s other side with the baby resting against his shoulder. “So, what’s this story that I’m supposed to be telling?”
“The swipe one, Grandpa,” Courtney said around her thumb that had made its way into her mouth.
Blaine’s shoulders shook with laughter. “Oh, that’s a good one, sweetie. Great choice. You’d better get comfortable, because this is an epic one…
“You see, it all started about forty years ago on a rainy spring evening. I had just visited Nana Pam in Ohio, and I was waiting at the airport to fly back home to New York. I was just sitting there, minding my own business, when the prettiest man I had ever seen sat next to me.
“I knew straight away that he was the right man for me, but your Poppy, well, he needed a little more convincing…”
The book mentioned is one of my all time favourite (children's) books: Love You Forever by Robert Munsch. If you don't know it (yet), go look it up. It's amazing.
Thanks for reading, I'd love to hear what you think!
