Winter

One morning in January, Blaine started yelping loudly from down the hall. Kurt was momentarily concerned, and was just getting ready to get out of his big, warm bed when Blaine came tumbling into the room, tripping over his own paws and yelping even louder.

"Kurt! Kurt, the sky is falling! Kuuuuuuuuuuurt!"

Confused, Kurt blinked sleepily and glanced at the window. It was snowing. He purred loudly at the sight and Blaine's insanity as the puppy barked continuously and hopped around.

"The sky is falling, Kurt! What do we do?"

Kurt gave a huge yawn and dropped his head back onto his bed. "Snow, Blaine," he corrected sleepily. "Go back to sleep."

But Blaine didn't seem to hear him. With another howl that Kurt knew had definitely reached Burt's sleeping ears, Blaine took off down the hall, barking madly. "Cooooooper! The sky is falling! Heeeelp!"

Kurt rolled his eyes and curled himself into a tighter ball. Cooper would set Blaine straight on the matter so that he could sleep.

Spring

Blaine had quickly adjusted to the snow for the winter. Thanks to Cooper he'd ended up sick more than once from playing in it too much. Kurt hadn't minded that too much since it meant Blaine actually sat still for long periods of time. Most of February had been spent with them curled up in Blaine's big boy dog bed while the puppy got over another cold. Kurt liked sleeping against Blaine's belly. His fur was thick and warm and so much better than the pile of blankets Burt kept by the couch.

The weather warmed up fast that year, and once Burt deemed Blaine healthy enough he let him out back with Cooper. Kurt followed after his boys to keep an eye on them. Blaine was full of an almost nervous excitement at the warm breezes and bright sunlight.

"Kurt," Blaine barked happily from across the yard. "It's so nice outside! Look, look! It's snowing again!"

Only it wasn't snowing, Kurt was certain of it. The warm breeze had blown harder this time, pulling some of the white flowers off the newly budding tree. Before him and Cooper could stop Blaine, he jumped up and swallowed one of the buds whole.

"Ugh! This snow tastes bad! Kurt, this snow is gross!"

Blaine pawed at his face and tongue, spitting out the soggy flower bud as Cooper rolled around on his back and laughed. Neither of them could keep a straight face long enough to give Blaine an explanation.

Summer

After the flower bud incidence Blaine stopped trying to eat anything he could find. Kurt was glad for the fact because most of the time it made Blaine sick and then he had to sit on top of the squirmy little puppy and bathe him until he didn't smell bad anymore. Holding Blaine down was becoming more and more of chore for him though. He was a lot bigger than Kurt now, and still just as spastic.

Fortunately Cooper had some control over his younger brother, even if he chose not to take advantage of it most days. By the time summer rolled around Burt had set up a sprinkle on a time in the backyard and installed a doggie door for them.

Most days Kurt stayed inside and watched the two brothers had fun out back, chasing each other around and snuggling up to nap in the warm sun. On this particular day it wasn't as hot so Kurt went outside with them, stretching out in a bright patch on the warm stones by the door.

Cooper was panting heavily at his side, finally worn out from running around for almost twenty minutes, but Blaine was still romping around the yard, nose to the ground.

"Coop, there's so many smells," Blaine barked, sticking his nose in a bush. "I like Kurt smell better though. Why can't everything smell like Kurt s– SQUIRREL!"

Cooper's head shot up in excitement, only to drop back down at the sight of the black and white yard invader. Kurt's hair stood up on his back and he jumped to his feet with a hiss.

"Cooper, that's a– "

"He'll figure it out the same way I did," Cooper said mildly, dropping his head onto his paws to watch.

A deafening bark echoed around the as Blaine charged, only for him to end up howling and yelping like someone had hit him. The monochromatic creature had turned its tail towards him, dosing him in stinking fluid.

Blaine continued to yelp shrilly as he backpedalled across the yard and scrambled through the doggie door. Kurt crinkled his nose as the smell hit his nostrils. He was not cleaning that smell off.

Autumn

By the end of the summer Kurt started bathing Blaine again. It took nearly two months for the smell to fully disappear and Blaine was very upset because of it. For a while Burt even confined him to the downstairs bathroom so he wouldn't stink up anything else. As soon as he stopped smelling Blaine curled up around Kurt and refused to leave his spot until Burt called him for meals. Kurt thought t was pretty adorable, and kept licking Blaine's big, pointy ears. Blaine's ears were his favorite part of Blaine because they were so much softer than the rest of him. This was saying quite a bit since Blaine was really furry and cuddly.

Burt closed up the doggie door as the weather got cooler, and the same way Kurt was woken up by Blaine on the morning of his first snow, he was woken up again. Only Blaine wasn't howling or barking in alarm, he was whimpering and whining.

"Blaine! Blaine, come back outside, buddy!" Burt shouted through the open front door.

Kurt had just blinked his eyes open in time to see Blaine dart under the couch. Or try to. Blaine was too big to fit under there now so his back legs and tail were left hanging out under the couch's skirt.

For a few moments Kurt watched Blaine's tail thump around as his puppy whimpered in terror. Kurt stretched and padded over, crawling under the skirt and rubbing himself along Blaine's side.

"What's wrong, honey?"

"The– the sky's falling again," Blaine whined loudly, his tail thumping around more quickly. "Cooper was rolling around in it, but I'm scared. Why is the outside so strange all the time?"

"They're leaves, Blaine," Kurt purred, nuzzling his face against Blaine cheek and then licking his ear affectionately. "They always fall down at this time of the year. They're fun to chase around and Burt likes to pile them up so we can roll around in them."

"I don't remember it last year," Blaine told him, covering his face with one of his paws.

"You were a late autumn puppy. You missed all the leaves," Kurt explained, gently pressing the tip of his nose to Blaine's. "I promise it's lots of fun."

"Fun? I like fun!" Blaine said, his head raising up in hope.

"Come on, I'll go out and play with you," Kurt said gently, giving Blaine's ear another reassuring lick.

As they crawled out from under the couch, Blaine licked Kurt's face. "You're my favorite, Kurt."

Kurt purred even louder than before and rubbed himself against Blaine's legs. Blaine was the sweetest, nicest puppy Kurt had ever met, and he was glad that Blaine was his.
