"I don't want to go out today! Especially not to 'Callbacks'!", exclaimed Kurt. "I'm not feeling good."
Santana sighed. She knew that this was going to be tough. "But Kurt! You can't stay here, hugging your boyfriend pillow forever!", she argued.
"It's Bruce!", Kurt intervened.
Santana couldn't believe it. "Fine!", she snapped. "I'll leave it up to you. You can either have your small cuddle party with Brucey here or you go out with a real friend trying to help you over the break-up of a three-month so called relationship."
"It was a relationship, Santana! Don't minimize this."
Santana raised an eyebrow. "Yes... and according to the talks you had with Rachel every now and then it was a very traditional one. Did you two try that no-sex-before-marriage-thing?", she spat.
Kurt was caught off guard by that. "I don't want to know, how you found that out. But I simply wasn't ready! I waited almost a year before I did it with Blaine!", he exclaimed.
"That doesn't count because it was both yours and Blaine's first time!", Santana returned. "But anyway... come on Kurt, give yourself a jolt. Go dress up!"
Kurt sighed. "It's okay. I won't mess with Miss Lopez...", he murmured and went to his drawer to get dressed.
Santana just grinned and grabbed her mobile, sending a text off to Blaine:
Lady Hummel is dressing up. I'll text you when we're on our way. Xx Santana
Blaine looked at his phone as it beeped. He read the text and smiled.
You're the best! I'll be there. Hope it'll work though... Xx Blaine
It will work, Blaine! Don't worry. After all it's my plan! Xx Santana
Blaine chuckled as he looked into the mirror of his hotel room. He wore simple black trousers, a grey dress shirt. He combined this outfit with his favourite bow tie, which Kurt got him for their first anniversary. He put some hairspray over his a little bit loosely gelled hair, grabbed his coat and went out of the hotel room towards the exit. When Blaine stepped out of the building, he took a deep breath. It's been a while since he visited Kurt in New York. Ever since he received a call from him in March, saying that he was with someone new, they barely talked. But thanks to Santana and Rachel he always knew what was going on in his ex-boyfriends life. When Santana told him about the break-up saying that it might be because Kurt still got feelings for him, Blaine was unsure. A part of him wanted to catch the next flight to New York to comfort him. But he didn't think that Kurt would want him around. Again, it was Santana who called him a few weeks later to talk him into getting to New York to surprise Kurt with a song.
Blaine went down the few blocks from his hotel to 'Callbacks'. He went in and got himself a coke to calm down his nerves. He looked around, thinking of the last time he was there. Blaine would never forget the moment when it crushed down on him. He just wanted to play 'Teenage Dream' to Kurt, because it was the song he'd sung when he first met him. Making the confession about his cheating afterwards was the worst moment of his life. Blaine sighed, taking another sip of his drink while he kept an eye on his phone, waiting for a message from Santana.
"Why are you running so fast, Santana. Is a hot chick waiting for you at the bar? If so I'd be very disappointed", Kurt said as he tried to keep up with Santana.
She shook her head. "No... no chicks. Tonight is all about you, Kurt!", she promised, smiling. "But it's chilly and I might need a toilet."
Kurt just nodded, eyeing Santana while she grabbed her phone and typed in a message, grinning.
When they got into 'Callbacks' a few minutes later, Kurt took Santana's coat. "I'll go grab some drinks and a good table while you go freshen up!", he insisted, smiling.
Santana nodded. "Thank you very much, Kurt. I'll be back in a minute!"
When she reached the stairs that lead down to the rest rooms she immediately caught sight of a nervous Blaine pacing in front of the rest room doors. She ran downstairs, hugging him tight without saying a word.
Blaine was surprised but returned the hug. "It's so great to see you, Santana!", he exclaimed.
Santana giggled. "And it's great to see you, Blaine Anderson!", she said wholehearted before loosening the hug to look into Blaine's face. "Did you come up with anything?", she wanted to know.
"Yes, I did. The song is called 'The Heart Never Lies'. I wrote it myself. It is not apologetic but it has a deep meaning.", he explained. "I just hope it's good enough..."
Santana smiled. "Kurt needs you! He just doesn't realise that, yet. And I think that you're an amazing musician. And an awesome friend and boyfriend. I want you to go out there and sing as if it was your last chance. Apparently it might be your last chance because I can't think of anything else that will convince Kurt.", she encouraged Blaine.
"Wow... I would never have expected such a pep talk from you.", he answered, overwhelmed.
Santana just shrugged. "There are many things you don't know about me yet.", she replied before turning around to join Kurt who was already seated right in front of the stage with two non-alcoholic cocktails.
"What took you so long?", he asked.
"There was I problem with the flush so I had to wait.", Santana lied, taking her drink.
Kurt nodded. "Oh yes... I had the same problem here once, too.", he remarked before lifting his drink to take a sip. "So... we need to do a duet. You brought me here, you sing with me!", he added.
"Easy, Kurt! We've just arrived. Let's check out tonight's competition first", answered Santana, pulling Kurt back into his chair as she saw Blaine making his way over to the stage without being noticed by Kurt to soon.
"Okay, Santana. We'll wait. But I'll get to pick the song!", Kurt teased.
"Whatever you want. After the next performance...", the Latina agreed.
Blaine sat down at the piano with weak knees. Once more he took a deep breath before he turned to the audience: "Good evening, my name is Blaine Anderson and I'll be singing 'The Heart Never Lies' which I wrote by myself. I dedicate this to one special person." He made sure to look at Kurt directly before starting to sing.
Some people laugh
Some people cry
Some people live
Some people die
Some people run
Right into the fire
Some people hide
Their every desire
Kurt wasn't able to say anything. In fact he thought that he was only dreaming when he heard that all-to-familiar voice and saw those stunning hazel eyes belonging to the man he once fell for head over heals. The song was breathtaking. The lyrics were simple so far but Kurt could sense that they were full of emotion by the way Blaine was singing. He had heard him singing to him often. But it had never that emotional.
But we are the lovers
If you don't believe me
Then just look into my eyes
'cause the heart never lies
Kurt felt tears running down his cheeks at that. He remembered Adam's last words: "I don't want to hurt you, Kurt. Really! But I guess that I'm not the man you want to be with for the rest of your life. We both know that. Just listen to your heart! It'll tell you what you want." He had been right. Kurt always wanted to ignore the feelings he had towards Blaine, because he betrayed him. But every time he thought about his future he ended up with imagining Blaine by his side. Whoa x2
Another year over
And we're still together
It's not always easy
But I'm here forever
Blaine looked at Kurt nearly the whole time he sang, saw the tears and how Santana grabbed his hand to support him. Blaine was also close to tears but he managed to keep them in until the end of the song. When he finished he thanked the audience and went to Kurt and Santana.
"That was amazing!", complimented Santana and Blaine could see that she was wiping away a few tears while Kurt just looked at him with disbelief.
"You're here...", he finally stated.
Blaine nodded. "Yes, I am, Kurt. Santana thought that you could need your... umm... best friend." It hurt a little bit to call himself only Kurt's best friend. But they had promised to be there for each other as best friends.
"I knew it was you, Tana...", said Kurt, smiling slightly at the girl.
"Guilty as charged!", Santana confessed. "But if the two of you don't mind, I'll go to the bar. The barkeeper is rather sexy and she might actually be playing for my team." With that she stood up and left Kurt and Blaine on their own.
Blaine sat down on the chair next to Kurt who seemed to be collecting himself. "So... how's it going?", Blaine finally asked to break the silence.
"Well... NYADA is great but hard and I'm still doing my internship at Vogue.com. So I've got pretty much to do. And I'm positive that Santana told you about Adam, or didn't she?", Kurt replied. "But what about you? How was your graduation, what are your plans now?", he wanted to know.
"Well... it was fun. I got my certificate we had a party with the Glee-Club and now everyone is in search for new places and new dreams.", Blaine explained.
"That's great. And what about you? You never talked about you future since we broke up", said Kurt looking at Blaine, wondering what had become out of his dreams to come to New York.
Blaine took a deep breath. "Well... I don't know, yet. I applied to various schools. But I didn't get any callbacks. I think I'll go for law or maybe economy, like my parents wanted and perhaps I'll reapply sometime later."
"You must be kidding. You won't study law or economy. It isn't your dream! You have to go for music! Music is your life!", said Kurt with a resolute tone in his voice.
Blaine seemed to be crestfallen. "You don't understand Kurt. There are no other plans. It will be between economy and law."
"But what happened to the guy who sent me off to New York without me having any concrete plans for the future. I didn't know how to earn money, how to make my living. But I did it.", argued Kurt. "I did it because of you. Because you helped me. And I know that you can do it, too."
Blaine took another deep breath. "Well... you had me, like you just said. But what about me? I do not have such a person." He couldn't bear to look at Kurt, who shrugged.
"Well... you have me, haven't you?", he said, smiling softly.
Blaine looked up. "I'm not sure Kurt. Have I?", he said.
Kurt thought for a while before nodding. "If you still want to?", he said suddenly sounding shy.
"Yes, I want to...", Blaine replied, unsure because he didn't know what exactly Kurt meant.
Kurt smiled. "Let's go for a walk, Blaine. I think we need some time on our own", he said, standing up slowly.
Blaine smiled and nodded before following the other man out of the bar.
"So... what exactly did you mean by saying that I've got you?", asked Blaine after they had walked in silence for a while.
Kurt stopped and took Blaine's hand. "When Adam broke up with me, he did it because he realised that I didn't love him the way I love you. And when you sang to me earlier this evening I made up my mind about my feelings. A year ago we had plans for your graduation. The year wasn't easy.
But I still want you around me. I want you to move to New York, like we planned. I can't live without you."
Blaine looked directly into Kurt's eyes that were glistening with tears. "I... I'd love to. But I'm not sure whether I can. I mean... what shall I do here in New York?", he wanted to know.
Kurt smiled. "Make music! Take some time off maybe get a small job. But you write such perfect songs. Why don't you try to become someone with it? Try to publish it. Law will still be there in a year from now.", he tried to convince him.
Blaine smiled. "Okay... I think I'll try it. I also wanted to move here. But I had no reasons except from you.", he answered, not getting any reply but a kiss from Kurt. Kurt who was his again.
We are the lovers
I know you believe me
When you look into my eyes
Because the heart never lies
