So, Guys! We are doing songs for Parent's Night! Mr. Schu said with a chipper smile. The choir room hummed with interest, but Kurt couldn't help but notice Blaine slide down slightly in his seat like a large weight had been pressed on his shoulders.
"So, Guys! We are doing songs for Parent's Night!” Mr. Schu said with a chipper smile. The choir room hummed with interest, but Kurt couldn’t help but notice Blaine slide down slightly in his seat like a large weight had been pressed on his shoulders.
“Figgins asked the arts department to each pitch in and do something special for the parents for Friday night! So each of you are going to come up with a song you'd like to sing to your parents,” Mr Schu explained with a large smile on his face.
“It could be a song that reminds you of your parents, or just one that is to them. Now you can do them in duets or groups if you want, it would save time we don’t want to run to long.” Schu clapped his hands and smiled “So get to it!”
Instantly the room went into motion, Mike looked at Tina with wide “save me” eyes and she just giggled and hugged him. Rachel was already scrolling though her iPod and complaining that she had way to many songs that she could sing to her dads that would bring them to tears. Finn instantly turned to Kurt with almost the same expression Mike had with Tina.
“Dude, we should like....do something together, 'cause we like are bros.” He said a sheepish smile.
“You mean you have no idea what in the world to sing to Carole, because emotional, touching songs are not exactly at the forefront of your resume?” Kurt asked giving Finn a look.
“No, that’s totally not what I was thinking.” Finn said with wide eyes and looking anywhere but Kurt’s face. Kurt laughed and shook his head,
“Relax Finn, I already have an idea for a song”
“Awesome” Finn said with a smile and turned back around to listen help Rachel pick a song before she exploded.
Kurt turned his attention to Blaine who hadn't moved this whole time. His eyes were locked on the floor in front of the risers and he didn't look excited at all like the rest of the room was.
“Blaine?” Kurt gently reached out and touching his hand when his boyfriend didn’t respond “Blaine?” he asked again and finally Blaine looked over at him “You okay?” Kurt asked his brows pulling up in worry. Blaine forced a small smile and nodded “Yeah...just thinking of a song”. Kurt knew extremely well that Blaine's relationship with his father was anything but ideal, and Blaine was pretty much a text book study of “daddy issues”, but Kurt just gave him a quick peck on the cheek and smiled.
“I'm sure you'll fine the perfect song.”

When Friday finally came around Blaine still hadn't told Kurt what song he was singing. As Kurt watched as choir room filled with the New Direction's and their parents he spotted Blaine walk in with a man Kurt had only seen once. Blaine's dad looked nothing like him, but Kurt could see where Blaine had gotten his addiction to gluing his beautiful curls down with hair gel from. Kurt couldn’t help but feel a little angry as he saw the expression on the man's face. It looked like he had been asked to come into a room full of dying cats and was using all his willpower not to turn and run out of the room.
Kurt could tell Burt was following his gaze toward Blaine and his Father, and he could piratically feel the air around them grow cold as Burt obviously disapproved on Blaine's fathers demeanor. Kurt was glad when Mercedes' dad came over and clapped Burt on the back and distracted him with talk of what ever sport was starting up soon.
It wasn’t long after that Kurt heard the distant sound of a cell phone ringing. Kurt turned to where the sound had come from and was not surprised to see Blaine's father on the phone. He watched as the man spoke quickly into the phone then hung up, put a hand on Blaine's shoulder say something to which Blaine nodded, then turned and walked out of the room like he was about to burst into flames.
Kurt's eyes moved to Blaine's and his heart broke to see Blaine sigh and hang his head, but Blaine seemed to know Kurt was watching as he looked up and met his eyes with his. Blaine walked over and Kurt wrapped his arm around his waist and hugged him.
“Hey Kiddo, where did your old man go?” Burt asked seeing Blaine had joined the group but missing his father.
“He...he uh....one of his clients needed him....” Blaine said clearing his throat as his voice caught. Burt took a long glance at Blaine before he placed a hand on his shoulder and squeezed it a bit with a small smile. Kurt couldn’t be more proud that Burt was his dad, but at the same time he was angry that Blaine's dad would put some rich bastard who probably got a DUI ahead of own damn son. Before Kurt could get too steamed and angry Schuester made the announcement that they were to start soon and the parents should head to the auditorium.
Burt hugged Kurt tightly then clapped Finn on the back before he turned to Blaine and hugged the boy a bit longer then he had hugged Kurt, and Kurt swore he heard him say “Don t sweat it kid, he doesn’t deserve to call himself your dad” or something similar. Burt gave Kurt one last quick hug and he and Carole headed out with the rest of the parents (after Carole had made her rounds of hugging “her boys” which also included Blaine).
“Alright kids!” Mr Schuester said with a bright smile “Show time!”

Kurt hugged Blaine backstage as they stood waiting for Rachel to finish belting out her version of “You Raise me Up” which she had tweaked to “You Two Raise Me Up”. She had agreed to not go last (to the surprise of most of the glee club) because she thought it would be polite to let the the audience have a chance to dry their tears before they were forced to make their way out of the auditorium.
“Your dad doesn't know what he is missing” Kurt said hugging Blaine a bit tighter, “Its his loss.” Blaine nodded a bit “Its fine” he said softly, and Kurt had almost missed it under Rachel's singing of the final note.
“It just means I picked the right song” he said and Kurt opened his mouth to ask what he meant but was cut off by the applause that followed Rachel as she bowed then hurried to the side of the stage.
“Break a leg Blaine!” She said with a smile and a quick hug as she hurried over to an awaiting Finn.
“And now, our final performance by Blaine Anderson” Mr Schu's echoing voice announced. Blaine reached in for a kiss and then was on the stage before Kurt had a moment to say anything.
When Blaine took his spot by the mic the music started, the bass setting a slow rhythm and the violins letting out a musical sigh. Blaine took a deep breath and then his low voice came out.
“I will not make the same mistakes that you did
I will not let myself cause my heart so much misery
I will not break the way you did
You fell so hard
I've learned the hard way, to never let it get that far
Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust
Not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid”
As Blaine slid into the chorus Kurt felt his heart ache once more for this boy he loved so much. This wasn’t going to be a happy upbeat “I love my daddy” song, like the rest of them had done....
“I lose my way
And it's not too long before you point it out
I cannot cry
Because I know that's weakness in your eyes
I'm forced to fake a smile, a laugh
Every day of my life
My heart can't possibly break
When it wasn't even whole to start with
Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust
Not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid”
Kurt watched as Blaine clutched the microphone like it was the only thing holding him to the stage, his eyes stayed closed as he sang the chorus once more but Kurt could picture the pain that had to be filling his eyes with out even seeing them.
“I watched you die
I heard you cry
Every night in your sleep
I was so young
You should have known better than to lean on me
You never thought of anyone else
You just saw your pain”
As the music swelled and grew, Blaine threw his hands down to the side and took a deep breath and sung at the top of his lungs these feelings he wanted to scream at his father for months, even though he wasn’t here to finally hear them.
“And now I cry
In the middle of the night
For that same damn thing
Because of you
I never stray too far from the sidewalk
Because of you
I learned to play on the safe side
So I don't get hurt
Because of you
I find it hard to trust
Not only me, but everyone around me
Because of you
I am afraid”
Blaine opened his eyes looking out at the crowd as tears, invisible to them because of the bright lights, but visible to Kurt, slid down his cheeks and sang softly, almost as if defeated:
“Because of you
Because of you”
As the music faded out Blaine looked to the ground and the lights went out, he had sung his heart out for his father, who would never hear him, because a rich man who got pulled over for driving his Porsche after too many drinks was more important then his own son.
