Author's Notes: Ok so I'm taking a break from the angst of my other story and wrote this quick one-shot this morning. I liked the idea of it all happening in the space of a four-minute song and how little snippets of timecan bethe things that define us.

"Did you use to dance when you were at school Dad?"

Soft light seeped lazily through the drapes that were billowing lightly around the open glass doors leading out to the patio and the gentle breeze made the flimsy fabric waltz and twirl in movement.  The motion seemed to mimic his daughter, spinning barefoot on the kitchen table. He watched her toes, skin tanned and nails painted a bubble gum pink, as they drew sweeping circles across the wood in time to the music that was spilling out of the radio.

Leaning against the sink, Kurt soaked up the sight of his thirteen year old daughter tracing new patterns into the table top, her narrow, not yet developed hips, swaying in time to the old familiar tune. The shiny dark curls that spiralled down her back, joined in the dance, ringlets twisting together as she rolled her neck back, eyes closed letting the music flow through her.

Somewhere in the back of his parental mind, he knew he should admonish her for dancing on the furniture; should make her get down and finish her cereal and tidy her room and get her laundry that was currently spewed across her bedroom carpet.

But not today. Not right now.

At this exact moment he would allow time to pause. For the duration of a song he would just let responsibility and work and life disappear. He knew the song. An old memory wiggled itself under his skin as he remembered another time, many years before, when he'd watched another dance to this melody.

***

"Blaine get down you dork. People are looking!"

Kurt was laughing, body creased up with a combination of embarrassment and pride as he watched his boyfriend bouncing and spinning with reckless abandon on the edge of the fountain in the centre of Lima's shopping mall; the familiar Katy Perry hit piped out of the speakers.

"Let them look. Come on Kurt get up here with me. I love this song and I love you and so the two of you should be together!" Blaine pouted, leaning down to drag at the other boy's arm, all the while shaking his hips and ass in a mock provocative shimmy.

"OH no way Mr....arrgh..Blaine!"

In one swift, and surprisingly strong for such a tiny person, movement, Blaine succeeded in yanking Kurt up on to the marble ledge.

"Ah ha! I win! Kurt meet Katy, Katy, Kurt...Now dance little man, dance!" Wiggling his eyebrows comically, Blaine proceeded to grab his waist and attempted to rock it for him, swishing his hips from side to side, while Kurt rolled his eyes and tried to shrug him off.

"Little man?! Not the best way to get me to dance with you, huh titch!" he squirmed away again but couldn't help the goofy grin that he knew was plastered over his face.

Never mind the people looking. Never mind the fact they were dancing on a dirty public fountain in the centre of a small town shopping mall. For perhaps the first time in his life Kurt was oblivious to the stares and smirks and disgusted looks thrown in their direction. With his eyes trained only on the gorgeous curls bouncing in front of him and the deep brown eyes that sparkled up into his face, Kurt felt the world evaporate around him into pointless air.

"Yeay....see that's it. Now you've got it!" Blaine spun in a circle, wobbling slightly in his precarious position on the narrow edge of the fountain, head thrown back and arms flung wide as Kurt self-consciously jigged on the spot.

"Blaine I think that security guard's coming over" Kurt motioned with the flick of his wrist, pointing further down the shopping mall concourse to a burly man glancing their way before striding forwards.

Blaine spun again on the spot, scooping Kurt into his arms in a mock courtly gesture and proceeded to waltz, rather awkwardly in the restricted space they had; twirling him round and round until Kurt felt dizzy, not sure if it was from the movement itself or the emotions swirling around him.

"Hey! You two. Stop that. This is a public place! Hey!"

Ignoring the shouts and attention they were obviously attracting, Kurt allowed Blaine to spin him one more time; allowed himself to be carried off into the music and the arms of the man he loved more than anything; allowed himself to feel momentarily free.

Then Blaine was reaching for his hand and dragging him from the fountain, sprinting towards the exit, fingers clasped tightly together as they burst into the sunlit car park. Gasping for breath and giggling uncontrollably Kurt leaned against the solid bulk of Blaine's chest, until their racing hearts settled. He felt Blaine's lips ghosting over his hair as he moved closer, softly singing against his ear.

"We can dance until we die. You and I, will be young forever."

She spun then in a motion that was so like her father's that Kurt closed his eyes briefly, breathing in the memory and storing it firmly away. Her white cotton sundress splayed out around her hips before falling gracefully to rest against her skinny legs once more and she smiled across at her him in delight.

Flinging the encrusted plates into the soapy water, wincing slightly as they clattered together, Kurt huffed in irritation. The flat was tiny enough without the added mess that Blaine seemed to create every time he whirlwind through the living space. Snatching at the t-shirt flung over the back of the sofa and clicking his tongue in exasperation when he tripped over Blaine's guitar for the third time that week, Kurt flopped down on the couch and closed his eyes briefly.

The New York dream.

He sighed, wiped his hand over his face before hauling himself up and returning to the dishes, flicking the ipod on to shuffle as he attempted to lighten his mood. He couldn't help his shoulders stiffening when he heard Blaine's key in the lock and his boyfriend's familiar cheerful call from the hallway. The plate currently in his hands, suffered under rigorous scrubbing.

The air in the flat changed suddenly as he felt the other man's presence behind him and a familiar tune bubbled up from the speakers. Kurt's eyelids fluttered closed as the lyrics swept over him along with the strong arms that wrapped around his waist, trapping him from behind. Lips brushed against his neck, warm and sending tingling currents through Kurt's skin as Blaine's tongue flicked out to lick a strip along his earlobe.

Anger dissipated as they swayed, hips slotted together into each familiar angle and curve.

"My missing puzzle piece"

Without thinking, Kurt turned slowly into the embrace, wrapping his soapy arms around his lover's neck, delving into the dishevelled curls and pulling their lips together. Lemon scented suds dripped paths down the back of Blaine's shirt, unobserved and free to wonder as the two men craned into each other; tongues dancing together while chest pressed flush against chest.

The song floated in the air amongst the soap and the mess and the heat while two bodies swayed, silent and complete.

***

"Dance with me Dad"

He smiled as he hauled his body up on to the table to join his daughter, surprised again at the way his joints ached just that little bit more with each passing year, each new grey hair. She grinned up at him, slotting their fingers together as she made him twirl her under his arm and spin them both, giggling her laugh that made his stomach ache with pride and love.

They were rare these moments, now she was getting older; the carefree hugs becoming increasingly infrequent as he made way for clothes and make-up and boys. She still came to him, there were the tears and tantrums and tentative calls for advice, but he knew he had become secondary; was reconciled to his newly defined role as father.

But now, as she leant forward into his embrace and snaked her arms around his waist, he allowed himself to breathe her in. Her slightly sweet, cranberry and coconut shampoo, wafted around them and he twirled them both, letting it dance with them in the air.

***

They twirled together, two forms wrapped around each other on the dance floor while the guests watched on. Blaine had wanted something more romantic for their first dance but Kurt had assured him that this song had defined them; had momentarily blinded Kurt to Blaine and then continued to do so all the years that had stretched on between them.

He looked down into his new husband's warm hazel eyes, blow wide with love and lust and simple wonder as he stared reverently up at Kurt and the other man felt his heart throb. He had never thought that they would find themselves at this point; the path from a teenage serenade to now, seemed dreamlike and unclear as they spun amongst the scent of the lilies and orchids dotting the room.

Blaine leant forward and sung against his mouth as he always did, breathing the words into his lips as if passing life between them, making them one.

"Let's run away and don't ever look back, don't ever look back"

***

Blaine stood in the doorway unobserved, watching his husband and daughter dancing on the kitchen table while the sunlight dappled their skin like a natural disco ball. They looked completely lost in each other, smiling into each step and twirl, spinning and waltzing and shimmering with a vitality that took his breath away.

He didn't want to disturb them, wanted simply to breathe in the moment and photograph it onto his memory. Each new line and wrinkle, each familiar muscle and contour of their faces, each tiny spark in their eyes, played out into the room, as the song neared its end, the final chords dancing along with them.

It was these moments he thought. These tiny, four minute moments of song that made up their lives, their history and future. He smiled as Kurt finally caught his eye above their daughters soft hair, no words necessary, as he continued to sway. Yes it was these moments Blaine thought again.

Awwwww, this is just gorgeous - and I doubt there's a Klaine fan in the world whose heart doesn't flutter when they hear or read those oh-so-familiar lyrics :)
