“Come on.”
“No.”
“Please?”
“No.”
“Aw, you’re no fun.”
“Sure I am.” Kurt cracked one eye open to regard his friend. He yawned and stretched both front legs out in front of him and then closed his eye again.
“Right,” Blaine said skeptically. He licked his lips and slowly walked over to Kurt. He stood there for a moment, looking down at the little ball of fluff that was curled up on the floor in the sun. “Hmm.”
“What?” Kurt said, exasperated. He kept his eyes closed, but he could hear the puppy panting softly above him.
“You’ve never actually romped before, have you?”
“I told you before, Blaine. Cats don’t romp.”
“Maybe that’s true, but kitties do.”
“Really? What kitten do you know that romps? Especially with puppies?”
“You.”
“Blaine!” Kurt said, fully annoyed now. He sat up, now at eye-level with the pup. “I don’t want to play right now. I’m not a puppy like you. Besides, I’m pretty sure I would accidentally scratch your eyes out. Our humans haven’t declawed me yet.”
Blaine looked down and sure enough, each of Kurt’s paws had four menacingly sharp claws plus an equally sharp dew claw.
“Well, just be careful then. Come on, you haven’t lived until you’ve romped around in the backyard. Trust me. The little human’s friend brought Casper over to play yesterday and it was so much fun!” Blaine said enthusiastically.
Kurt just blinked at him. After a moment’s silence, he spoke. “I just…it’s not that I don’t like you or anything…you know I do. It’s nothing against you. I just feel…kind of lazy today.”
“Please. You feel lazy every day. Maybe if you got up every once in a while and exercised in the backyard, it would give you a second wind. Just try it once and if you don’t like it, I’ll stop pestering you.”
Kurt mewed softly, laughing. “Yeah, right. We’re talking about you, a one-year-old puppy, here. You have the energy of the entire neighborhood in you. You will never stop pestering me. I don’t know how I put up with you every day.”
“Oh, you love me and you know it. Do you even remember what your life was like before the humans brought me home?” Blaine asked.
“Calm. Peaceful. Quiet.”
“More like boring,” Blaine said. He paused for a moment to sit and scratch his ear with one of his back paws, and then stood up again. “Fine. If you don’t want to romp, can we at least play with one of your mouse toys?” he asked hopefully. He turned around and peered behind the couch where he saw Kurt playing with it just the day before.
“Ew, no. You’ll get doggy drool all over it.”
“Come on, Kurt! I’m bored! Humor me a little!” Blaine said, starting to whine.
“I hate when you make that pathetic noise.”
“Then play with me.”
Kurt stood up. “Maybe tomorrow.”
Blaine looked at his friend sadly. “Promise?”
“I promise. Now stop giving me your puppy–dog eyes. I have an idea of something we can do that I think you’ll enjoy.”
“What?” Blaine asked, curious. He wagged his tail excitedly.
“Come over here and lie down,” Kurt said, moving a little to the right. Blaine blinked at him, but after a moment walked over to Kurt. He sniffed the kitten slightly as he passed him, and then walked in a circle and plopped down in the sunny spot.
“Now what?” Blaine said, turning his head to look back at Kurt.
Wordlessly, Kurt padded over to his friend and curled up right next to him, pressing the side of his body against the puppy’s silky soft furry belly.
“We’re cuddling in the sun,” Blaine pointed out unnecessarily.
“Yes, we are.”
“But-“
“Shh,” Kurt said. “You’re ruining the moment.”
Blaine opened his mouth to retort, but was interrupted by Kurt purring contently and nestling closer to him. Blaine put his head down and pushed his nose gently into Kurt’s head. “Okay, this is kind of nice,” he admitted.
“Told you,” Kurt mumbled sleepily.
Blaine smiled and closed his eyes. The heat of the sun combined with Kurt’s body heat next to him felt so good, that within minutes he was fast asleep.
