The song Kurt sang is a reprise I found on Tumblr. You can listen to its amazingness here.
Sorry the ending is kind of... just thrown in together just like that. I wasnt meant to use a deus ex machina, but it was really the only way I thought of so they can have a happy ending! To my defense, thats how Frozen ended too, so xD
Prologue:
Little six year old Blaine has always wondered why his birthday was on Christmas Eve.
…Well, of course, the logical part of him says that it is when he was born. According to what adults told him, it was when his parents decided to… give him to the world, or it was when Blaine decided to show himself to the world, something like that. The logistics of it is still confusing to Blaine.
However, the emotional part of him always ends up asking… why?
Blaine keeps on telling himself it's a good thing, because his birthday is the same time when the snowflakes come down. His birthday is cold and white and joyful. It is filled with happy people singing Christmas carols and having feasts. It is the time for ice skating, sledding, and skiing. Though Blaine's brother, Cooper, used to tease him a lot about it. He keeps on telling Blaine that he doesn't get nearly as much presents as the other kids do, because he has the same presents for Christmas and for his birthday. But Blaine insists that it's okay, because his best friend Kurt always shares his toys…
Kurt! Speaking of Kurt…
Besides being Blaine's best friend and besides being the only person whom Blaine can share toys with, Kurt has… powers. Real powers. He has the ability to create and control ice. During winter season, they play in the snow, sometimes they use the snow which Kurt created. To Blaine's delight, Kurt would erect snow forts and snowmen with the snap of a finger, and he can form snowballs effortlessly. Sometimes, when they're feeling a little too active, Kurt would make them a slide made of crystal clear ice, and Blaine would enjoy going down in its smooth, slippery state. Kurt would usually catch him on the other end, and they would both giggle.
It was all good times. Blaine and his forever mysterious Christmas Eve birthday, and Kurt being his only friend whom he can celebrate it with, who happens to have powers. Kurt and Blaine have practically known each other since they were born, really, and from the moment they learned how to interact, they became inseparable.
Everything was turning out very well for Kurt and Blaine, until, of course, one day, the event that the adults feared the most happened. Kurt accidentally hit Blaine with an icy blast, and it went to his head. Kurt told his parents immediately, and the adult Hummels told the Andersons. They took the weak and nearly dying Blaine to the trolls to have him healed.
“You're lucky it wasn't in the heart.” One of the older trolls said, which resulted in Kurt hiding behind his parents' legs in fear. “The heart is much harder to heal. The only way, is an act of true love.”
An act of true love. Surely, a seven year old like Kurt can never commit an act of true love. He is just way too young for that.
The parents agreed that the trolls should remove all of Blaine's knowledge about the power. The less he knows, the safer he'll be. The memories though, especially the good ones, will remain. Nothing is completely forgotten, after all, so they must take precaution.
So, with the agreement of the Andersons and the Hummels, the adults have all decided to keep Kurt away from the world, especially from Blaine. The only way for Kurt and the people around him to be safe, is to hide the power. Never speak of it. Blaine can never, EVER remember.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blaine has no idea why his best friend Kurt suddenly stopped talking to him.
Well, it came out of nowhere, really. At least, that's what Blaine thinks. He and Kurt used to be best buddies. Every day, they would either go to the park, or play in Kurt's yard, or eat ice cream, or sing happy songs in Kurt's room… They did lots of things, Blaine couldn't count them all with his little fingers. Point is, there wasn't a day wherein they didn't bond. It was just always like that, and Blaine knows it. Kurt and Blaine, best friends forever. For Blaine, it was like their friendship is set in stone, or something like that. But apparently Kurt didn't think the same way, and just thinking about it makes Blaine's heart hurt. Every night, before he goes to sleep, Blaine swears that he can still feel Kurt's fingers intertwined along his. He can still hear Kurt's sweet, melodious laugh and voice, he can still see Kurt's magnificent blue eyes. He doesn't want to let Kurt go, really. And he honestly never will. He won't give up until he has his best friend back.
Blaine couldnt help it. Since the day Kurt cut him off, Blaine went to the Hummel residence every day. He would ask Kurts parents where Kurt is, and Mrs. Hummel always answered him the same way. "Go home, honey. Kurt does not want to see anyone right now." Or when she is feeling particularly fed up with him, Elizabeth would get Burt, and he would reply with a quick and dismissive "Blaine, Kurt is not in the mood. You should go." and every time, Blaine would just frown, nod his head in defeat, and go back home feeling sad and empty. He just misses his best friend. He used to cry himself to sleep over it, but as time went by he slowly got over the fact that maybe Kurt doesn't want to be with him anymore. That doesn't mean he is giving up, though. He will never give up.
Every single day, from spring to autumn, Blaine would show up in the Hummel doorstep, wearing his casual attire: a short-sleeved button down, a sweater vest, and a bowtie. These are usually paired with short pants, mid-length socks and black leather shoes. He will bounce excitedly on the Hummels' doorstep asking for Kurt. Whoever answers the door would, with a heavy heart, have to turn him down, and Blaine would just frown slightly and say “It's okay Mr. and Mrs. Hummel. I understand.” And they would smile sadly at him, and Blaine would smile back. “He will come out soon. I know it.” And really, adults can only take so much of the boy's optimism. They'd hate to break his heart, so every time, they would just nod. They are lying to the boy, in a way, but they know that it is what will hurt him the least. How Blaine never gets tired of doing this every day is beyond them. They can only hope that he can get over it already. The sooner he moves on, the less it will hurt.
Of course, being six, Blaine can only take so much of Kurt's rejection. On Christmas eve, his /seventh/ birthday, Blaine couldn't take it anymore. Mr. and Mrs. Hummel have to say yes this time, or else he will go to Kurt's room himself. Maybe this time, Kurt will be different. Maybe. Blaine dressed casually, but added a thick coat to his outfit before he went outside.
Elizabeth Hummel was in the kitchen, chopping carrots, when there was a knock on the back door. Without checking to see who it was, she opened the door so the stranger can come in. What greeted her, however, is not a stranger, but rather, a familiar little boy with a mess of curls in his head, and bright eyes.
“Oh, Blaine! You're back.” she said with a small smile playing on her lips. Even though the boy visiting too often can be a handful sometimes, she is still glad to see him. It's Christmas Eve, after all, and she admits that even she needs a little bit of optimism in her life. A kid full of warmth, unlike Kurt.
“Yes Mrs. Hummel!” Blaine answered brightly, his eyes shining with hope and positivity. “Is Kurt here?” He bit his lower lip in anticipation and crossed his fingers behind his back, shifting his weight from one leg to the other nervously yet excitedly, looking up at the mother's eyes.
Elizabeth took a moment to consider. She did not want to be the one to crush the hope in the boy's eyes, so she finally gave in and nodded. Again, it's Christmas Eve, anyway. “He is in his room.” She said with a soft sigh, but still smiling nonetheless. Sooner or later Blaine is going to have to stop visiting Kurt. Elizabeth trusts Kurt to know what to do.
Blaine had to keep himself from jumping for joy. Well. Mrs. Hummel is nice today. “Thank you, Mrs. Hummel!” Blaine exclaimed politely before running up to Kurt's room. He had to catch his breath when he was finally upstairs, because he ran so fast. He inhaled, and exhaled deeply. Then he rapped onto Kurt's locked door with his fist. “Kuuuurt, it's me! It's Blaine!” He said a little too excitedly.
He knocked with the familiar beat, the way he always knocks ever since they were kids. And he began singing excitedly.
"Do you wanna build a snowman?
Come on lets go and play.
I never see you anymore,
Come out the door,
Its like youve gone away."
Blaine paused to see if Kurt responds. Nothing.
"...We used to be best buddies.
And now were not.
I wish you would tell me why.
Do you wanna build a snowman?
It doesnt have to be a snowman."
Blaine finished the song hopefully, eyes wide as he anticipated Kurts reply.
"Go away, Blaine."
Hearing that come from Kurt's mouth himself, Blaine felt his heart shatter. It was the first time he has heard Kurt's voice in such a long time, and it was already a ‘no'. And Kurt forgot it was his birthday, too. Blaine's lower lip quivered, but he tried to not let it get to him. He slowly lowered his fist from the door.
"Okay, bye."
Blaine sang softly, trying to still be in tune, as he pouted a little. He tried hard not to cry. He will not cry. He is a big boy. He is /seven/ now. Kurt will come out soon. For now, Blaine just has to build the snowman himself. He sniffled, and then immediately wiped his eyes with the back of his hand. He is not crying, he totally isn't.
He headed downstairs to go say good bye to Mrs. Hummel, adding a quick “Maybe he will see me next time, Mrs. Hummel!” and rushed out the door. He doesn't want Mrs. Hummel to see his red eyes. He headed to their own yard instead, and sat down on the porch.
“If Kurt won't talk to me, fine. I will make the snowman myself.” He pouted and crossed his arms, looking around the yard for the perfect spot. He found a mound of snow under the tree where he once carved their initials together, and smiled to himself. That spot will do.
Blaine was rolling mounds and mounds of snow to put them together, as Kurt silently watched from his bedroom window. He placed his hand on the windowpane sadly, as if trying to reach out to Blaine. He noticed that there are little ice shards starting to show around the glass where his fingers are. Kurt pulled his hand away and frowned. He wrapped his arms around himself comfortingly and inched away from the window, still watching the curly-haired boy from his room, but trying not to think too much about him.
Blaine hummed happy songs he and Kurt used to sing as he made the snowman. He found lots of twigs, so after turning them into the hands, he used the extra twig as a scarf for the snowman. When it was done, he smiled to himself. Now this is something to be proud of….
…but wait. Looking closely, Blaine realized that his snowman ended looking up a lot like Kurt. Blaine definitely misses Kurt too much. Blaine smiled again, and then decided to name him “Kurt snowman”. However, right now, Kurt snowman looks lonely, so Blaine frowned. He looked around and found some dry leaves, and more twigs. Just enough for… another snowman. Blaine thought it through like a normal seven year old would, and then decided that yes, he will make another snowman for Kurt snowman.
So Blaine did it again. He rolled mounds and mounds of snow as he hummed happily, until he was satisfied with the result. He placed the dried leaves on the snowman's neck to act as a bowtie. Well, now. This new snowman looks a lot like him. He smiled again. This is “Blaine snowman”, then. Blaine deducted that if the real Kurt and Blaine can't hang out under this tree anymore, then maybe Kurt snowman and Blaine snowman would enjoy it. It's just like the old times, only, snowmen.
Blaine hugged Kurt snowman, trying to think it was him, but it only lasted for a second because Kurt snowman was too cold. Blaine frowned. “I miss you, Kurt.” He whispered to Kurt snowman, pretending that it was the real Kurt. It doesn't work. Blaine sighed, stood from where he was kneeling on the ground, and just headed back inside, not knowing that the real Kurt was watching from the windowsill.
hat night, when everyone was asleep, Kurt snuck out of their house and went to Blaine's yard (their fence was always kept open since they were young, because Kurt and Blaine used to spend a lot of time together in the Anderson yard.)
Kurt approached the two snowmen, and when he was near enough, he knelt and hugged the Blaine snowman, his tears that he has been holding in for too long finally falling down his cheeks. He began to sing, with the same tune with what Blaine was singing earlier.
“Yes, I wanna build a snowman…
Im sorry that it took so long.
I didnt know I needed you,
I really do,
And now youre gone.”
Kurt hugged the snowman tighter as he closed his eyes. He tried to remember what Blaine's hugs feel like. It's no good, because the snowman isn't hugging him back.
“Please just ask me once more,
just one more time.
I promise Ill open the door…”
Kurt pulled away from the hug, and then looked at Blaine snowman in the eye. It was beady. Just two black dots made from... rocks, or something. It was nothing like Blaine's hazel eyes, which are full of life.
“Yes I wanna build a snowman ....”
Kurt finished sadly, sighing as he wiped his nose with the back of his hand.
“Happy birthday, Blaine.” Kurt kissed the forehead of Blaine snowman. His face and lips were being covered in snow, but he didn't care. Some of his tears fell down on the snowman, but that's okay. His tears were cold anyway, just like the rest of him; surely the snowman wouldn't melt from that.
“Kurt?”
Kurt froze. That voice. He knows that voice. He has been caught, and he knows there is nothing he can do about it. Running away now would be a stupid decision. So, hesitantly, he slowly turned his head to the side. And sure enough, there was Blaine. The real Blaine, standing beside him wearing pyjamas, bedroom slippers, and a robe.
“What are you doing here, Kurt?”
Kurt doesn't know how to answer that. And what to say, really. “I-I….” He tried to answer, but failed. He avoided the real Blaine's eyes. He kept his head hung low, as he thought of how he was going to answer Blaine's question.
“Did you really just hug Blaine snowman?”
Blaine is using that curious tone, the one he uses when he asks how babies are made, or why cats and dogs hate each other, or why the sky is blue… stuff like that. Kurt knows it too well, because Blaine always asks questions.
Kurt finally took the courage to raise his head to meet Blaine's eyes.
“I just… I wanted to greet you happy birthday,” Kurt said lamely. He bit his lip almost shyly, ashamed of his own doing, as he started to blush. He doesn't even deserve Blaine's attention right now, and yet here he was, talking to him like nothing between them happened. He was thinking of ways of how he can apologize to his bestfriend, when the next thing he knew-…
Blaine is kneeling next to him, and hugging him. Blaine. Is. Hugging. Him. Tightly, at that.
Kurt's mind shortcircuited, he lost his train of thought. He doesn't know anymore. There are a million of questions in his head right now. Why is Blaine hugging him? Is he forgiven? Just like that? How did Blaine see him, even? His thoughts wouldn't shut up, so he did the only thing he felt like doing. He hugged Blaine back.
Blaine is warm, unlike Blaine snowman. Blaine's hugs feel good. Kurt leaned in closer and tightened his arms around the boy. The warmth of Blaine's hug, the childish, yet completely mutual love they have for each other… Those are enough to melt the coldness in Kurt's heart.
Kurt pulled away slightly, just enough so he can look Blaine in the eyes. “I am so sorry. I missed you so much.” He said simply. Then he felt like he needed to elaborate. “I-…” Blaine shut him up by grabbing his hand and squeezing it tightly. Kurt gave Blaine a confused look. Blaine just smiled.
“It's okay.” Blaine stroked the back of Kurt's hand with his thumb reassuringly. “I missed you, too.” He smiled wider. “I am just glad you're back.”
The tears came again, and this time, they were warm. They weren't cold anymore.
“Hey, it's okay, why are you crying?” Blaine's eyes widened as his hands immediately went up to comfort Kurt. He patted Kurt's back softly.
“I… I pushed you away and this is how you forgive me? Just like that?”
Blaine nodded. “Of course. You are my best friend, Kurt.” Kurt gripped Blaine's hand tighter. “To me, you were never gone.”
Kurt sniffled again as he tackle hugged the boy holding his hand. The same boy who waited for him, and without doubt took him back in. The same boy who forgave him just like that, as if he did nothing wrong at all. The same boy who made a snowman who looks like him, because he misses his bestfriend.
Blaine just chuckled in delight as he hugged Kurt back, just obviously happy that his best friend is back in his life.
“Let's build another snowman tomorrow.” Kurt suggested softly, finally starting to smile after such a long time. Blaine nodded excitedly.
They walked hand in hand, Kurt walked Blaine back to his house, and Blaine watched out the door as Kurt went back to his. When Blaine finally shut the door, Kurt ran back to the snowmen and smiled widely. He made sure to remember what they looked like, because next year they wouldn't be seeing them again.
Kurt knows that next year, it would be the actual Kurt and Blaine sitting under the tree.
