Blaine looked up and squinted at the sky. It was such an amazing day. The sun shone down on the two children as they ran around the yard. Blaine and his best friend Kurt were playing at his house on a wonderful summer day.
"Gotcha!" Kurt yelled as he touched Blaine's shoulder. He was still staring at the sky and didn't notice Kurt creeping up behind him. "Now you're it!" he laughed as he ran away.
Blaine laughed too as he chased after him, "Not for long!"
The two continued to chase each other in a game of tag until they were tired out and ended up sprawled out on the lawn, looking up at the clouds.
"Look! That one looks like a fish!" Kurt exclaimed, pointing at a cloud.
Blaine smiled and closed his eyes. He loved days like these. Summer days of just spending time with Kurt, not caring what would happen the next day, as long as they spent it together.
"Blaine! Look at that one!" said Kurt, oblivious to Blaine's silent musings.
"It looks like a puppy," Blaine said quickly.
"No, it doesn't! It looks like a bird!" Kurt sat up and looked at Blaine. "Are you paying attention at all?"
"Of course, I am!" replied Blaine, sitting up as well.
"Come on, let's go play on the swing set," said Kurt suddenly, grabbing Blaine's hand and dragging him over to the swings.
"Yesterday, my mommy took me to school to meet the kindergarten teacher," said Kurt said while swinging back and forth, happily. "Did your mommy take you yet?"
"No, not yet," Blaine said quietly, looking down at the ground.
"Well, when Mommy was talking to the teacher, I went to play at the playground. They got agiantswing set. Even bigger than yours! I can't wait until we can swing on that one."
"Yeah, me neither," said Blaine, still looking at the ground.
"Kindergarten's gonna be so much fun!" said Kurt. "There's so much stuff to do there! We can paint and draw, and there's dolls and a racecar track. And legos, Blaine! Lots of legos! I can't wait til we get there! It'll be just like summer. We can play all day!"
Kurt continued to excitedly talk about kindergarten for a while. Blaine smiled and nodded when he said something, trying to pay attention. But as he went on, Blaine just got more depressed. He didn't even notice when Kurt stopped talking suddenly.
"Blaine! What's wrong?" he said. "Aren't you excited for school, too?"
Blaine stopped swinging. He didn't know what to tell him. He couldn't tell him. He didn't want him to be upset. What should he do?
"I'm... excited," he said slowly.
Before he could say anything else, however, Blaine heard his mom's voice calling from the back door of the house.
"Kurt! Your mom is here for you!"
Kurt jumped off the swing.
"See you tomorrow, Blaine!" he said, waving to him as he headed toward the house.
"Bye!" he yelled to him, still sitting on the swing.
Blaine didn't know if he would be able to tell Kurt tomorrow. Tell him why he wasn't excited about kindergarten. He wasn't excited because he wouldn't be going to kindergarten. Not with Kurt anyways. His family was moving the week before school started. He would be going to another school.
Tomorrow, he would just have to pluck up the courage and tell him all of this. They would have to make the most of their few last weeks of summer together. Blaine knew that it would hurt a lot, but his only hope was that maybe, just maybe, they might see each other again someday.
