Author's Notes: Just a little drabble inspired by me watching my cousin interact with his daughter this weekend. And definitely reminiscent of when my dad got me ready for school when I was little!
Blaine’s fingers fumbled and slipped, and he had to bite his lip to hold back the string of curses that threatened to escape.

'Fucking shit shit fuck! Why is this so damn hard?' he thought as he tried to regain his grip. His eyebrows furrowed, he bit his lip even harder as he concentrated, trying to force his fingers to work with a level of dexterity that he just didn’t possess.

Kurt walked into their kitchen, took one look at Blaine’s tireless struggle, and tried in vain not to snort with laughter. Blaine glared up at him.

“It’s not funny! Why can’t I do this?” he asked, throwing his hands up in frustration.

Kurt walked over and knelt down in front of Blaine. “Oh, Katy, is Daddy having trouble putting your hair up again?” he addressed the squirming two year old in Blaine’s lap. She giggled and nodded.

“Haven’t I shown you how to do this before, Blaine?”

“Yes, Kurt, but I physically can’t do it,” Blaine explained, frustration plain on his face. “My hands are too big, this clip is freakishly small, and her hair is so fine and wispy it just flies all over the place!” He demonstrated his struggles, once again brushing his hand back across the top of their girl’s head, trying to scoop up all of the fine, sandy brown hairs into one clump as the other hand fumbled uselessly with the small yellow bow clip. It didn’t help that this was Blaine’s sixth or seventh try, and Katy was clearly getting impatient as well, wiggling around on her daddy’s lap, eager to be set down.

Kurt, now seated across the table from Blaine, tried to hide his smile behind his hand. “Do you want me to do it?” he asked as Blaine threw the bow down on the table in disgust.

“You can try, but good luck. That hair just won’t cooperate.”

“C’mere, sweetie. Dad will get your hair fixed all pretty for you,” Kurt said with a smile, holding his arms out for the little girl as she jumped from Blaine’s lap and ran to the other side of the table.

Blaine watched skeptically, but Kurt just lifted the girl into his lap, gently gathered up all the hair from the front of her face, gave it a slight twist and deftly slipped the bow into place. He smiled up at Blaine, who just glared.

“Not fair. Her hair’s just like yours, you’ve had more practice dealing with it!”

Kurt grinned, hugging his daughter close as he straightened the collar on her dress. “What, like your curly mop is any easier to handle? But since you actually know how to manage your hair, I guess we can use your sperm for the next one,” he teased.

Blaine let out a dramatic sigh. “Fine. I guess that will have to do,” he said with a fake pout. He couldn’t hold the expression for long, though. Katy was still seated in Kurt’s lap, and he was helping her count the buttons down the front of her dress. Blaine always loved seeing the two of them together like that—Katy was growing to look more like him every day, and it was always most noticeable when they were right next to each other. The same blue-grey eyes, fine, light hair and milky skin. Even the color that rose on their cheeks when they were flushed was the same, and Blaine couldn’t get enough of it.

Kurt was always reassuring Blaine that he would be the biological father of their next child, but it truly didn’t bother him. He loved waking up every day to the little person that looked just like his better half. Even without Blaine’s DNA, she was a constant reminder of what was theirs, of the life they had built for themselves and for this new little girl.

“Well, I’ve got to get to work,” Kurt said suddenly, startling Blaine out of his reverie. “Do you have rehearsal today?”

Blaine nodded in reply. “I’ll pick her up on my way home.”

Kurt leaned down to give Blaine a quick kiss. “Go get your backpack and give Daddy a hug goodbye, Katy! He’ll pick you up from school today.”

Katy ran back in from the living room as fast as her short legs could carry her and threw her arms around Blaine’s leg.

“Bye-bye Daddy,” she said as Kurt stooped to grab the backpack she’d dropped and took her hand.

“See you after work, babe,” Kurt called out as he and Katy headed to the front door. “We love you, don’t we, Katy?”

“Love you too,” Blaine called back, grinning at the backs of his husband and his perfect little miniature as they disappeared out the door.
