It’s hard, walking to the graveyard. Blaine is silent next to him, his hand warm in his, just a presence as Kurt leads him through the stones.
He finally stops at a stone, which, to Blaine, looks no different than the others in the row. As Kurt kneels down and places the daffodils down, he begins to notice some little things. The gravestone is neat, no moss or dirt obscuring the pristine white marble. There are no dead petals or old flowers littering the plot.
The gravestone reads: “Elizabeth M. Hummel. 1970-2003. RIP.” It’s simple, almost minimalistic, striking black words against the ivory. Blaine regards the stone for a minute longer, and then Kurt begins to speak.
“Dear Mom. Sorry I didn’t get a chance to come by at the usual time last week, Glee ran a little bit longer than I expected to, and then Carole wasn’t home so I had to make Dad dinner, and everything just got…Well. Dad’s doing well, I’m making sure he’s not working too hard in the shop, and that he’s not eating that disgusting greasy food. Carole’s doing well too, she and I went shopping last weekend for a new dress for her sister’s wedding. You would like Carole, I think. Finn and Rachel, you remember Rachel, right? Well they’re back on again, so Finn’s been swanning around the house and practicing showtunes. I think Rachel’s trying to make him try out for some theatre thing.
“Now, Mom, I have to tell you something. You remember Blaine, my boyfriend right? The cute one, with the curly dark hair with too much gel, and the tendency to jump on furniture? You should, I only moaned about him to you for weeks and weeks. Well, I decided it was high time he meet you. After all, he’s already met Dad and Carole. So, um, here he is.”
Kurt looked nervously at Blaine, and bit his lip. Blaine looked solemnly back at him before fixing his gaze on the headstone and speaking straight to it.
“Hello Elizabeth. May I call you Elizabeth? My name’s Blaine Anderson. Apparently, Kurt’s already told you a little bit about me. Hopefully nothing too embarrassing. I just want you to know that your son is amazing. He is beautiful, and funny, and smart, and has a lovely smile. But he also has a beautiful soul, if that makes sense. He’s so compassionate, and he just understands, everything. I feel like I’ve been looking for him forever, and now that I’ve finally found him, I’m never letting him go.”
Blaine took a deep breath and continued. “It’s just…I can’t even describe him properly. He’s an angel, absolutely perfect to me. And that’s why I came here today. Elizabeth, I love your son. I really do. I just wanted you to know that, and that I will never, ever do anything to hurt him. That’s all.”
He bowed his head for a moment, and then Kurt was tucking his head into the space between his neck and shoulder, and Blaine felt wet eyelashes brush his neck. They stayed like that for a few minutes, just sitting quietly, the three of them.
They stood up simultaneously. Kurt’s eyes were shiny, but there were no tears. He pressed a small kiss to Blaine’s cheek, and they linked hands. They wandered out of the graveyard, a soft breeze whistling behind them.
Somewhere, Elizabeth Hummel was smiling.
