"Please... please, I need to see him, please you don't understand... no, I'm not... we're not related, no, but just please listen-" The nurse frowns and places a hand on his shoulder, and Blaine realizes he's barely drawn breath in the last few minutes. He's not aware of much, just of how his body is thrumming with a manic energy, and how his chest hurts - he needs to see Kurt. Why doesn't this woman understand? They're not related, but that doesn't mean he can't mean something to Kurt. Blood is not the only thing that is important in a relationship.
Blood...
"They said there was a lot of blood," he chokes out, staring at the nurse with wide, fearful eyes. "They.... Burt said. He lost blood?" The nurse sighs this time, lifting her hand from his shoulder.
"Sir, it's true that Mr Hummel lost a great deal of blood. It-" Her face falls, and Blaine is immediately terrified. "It was bad. It shouldn't have happened." She shakes her head, and Blaine can see tears collecting in the corners of her eyes. Dimly, he wonders if she knows Kurt - if she's heard about him from Carole, or seen him when he came to visit his father last year. Or perhaps she's only weeping at the destruction of yet another young life.
Does she know how it happened?
"The details are a little foggy," the nurse responds, and Blaine realizes he's spoken out loud without meaning to. "But I believe... he was attacked?"
Everything inside Blaine freezes.
It couldn't have happened to Kurt. Brave, strong Kurt, courageous Kurt who was so much bigger and better than Lima. Kurt, who was so close to getting out. Kurt, who gave Blaine himself so much courage. Why was this happening? Kurt had graduated, he was looking forward to NYADA in the fall, everything was supposed to be okay.
He was supposed to be safe.
"I need to see him," he whispers, voice breaking. The nurse gazes at him in sympathy, still shaking her head.
"He's in a delicate condition, sir - they're trying to find blood for him, but we've been running low -"
"I'll give it!" Blaine interjects desperately, pulling his sleeve up and shoving his arm out for emphasis. "I'll- I'm type O, I can- please miss, I'll give it, just please don't..." Don't let him die, he finishes silently, the very thought of the word sending chills down his spine. He doesn't know what he'll do if Kurt never wakes up.
The nurse swallows. "I must decline," she finally replies, sounding stiffer than before. "As you are well aware, we cannot accept blood from homosexual men."
Blaine stares at her blankly, his fingers still clenched around the fabric of his sleeve. He can't even bring himself to ask how she knows, or if she knows that Kurt is gay - all he processes is that what he is, his very love for Kurt, is what is stopping Blaine from saving him.
