Blaine knew he would be in the coffee shop. It was a Wednesday afternoon, meaning that he was there with Rachel for their weekly coffee date. It was the perfect, and only, opportunity he would have to talk to Kurt.
There was just one minor problem, though. He couldn’t seem to gather the courage to get out of his car. It was as if his hands were super glued to the steering wheel never to be removed. His knuckles were beginning to turn white from holding on too tight, the whole car shaking from the quick bouncing of his leg.
“Maybe this is a bad idea,” he mumbles to himself.
Of course it is, he thinks. He knows that. He knew that when he came up with this idea days ago. Yet, it needs to happen. It has to happen. It will happen. Today, right now, in that coffee shop.
Finally convincing himself that this is a good idea, he straightened his bow-tie one more time before actually getting out of his car. Once he finally reaches the door to the Lima Bean, all his doubts began flooding back into his mind.
You need to talk to him, he keeps reminding himself. So he takes that one deep breath before pushing the door open, smiling at the smell of freshly brewed coffee.
His eyes land on Kurt instantly. His head is thrown back as laughs begin to escape from his throat. Rachel is across from him, her cheeks turning pink as Kurt continues to laugh.
“You can do this,” he whispers to himself.
Before he knew it, he’s standing at the side of Rachel and Kurt’s table. It was as if he could feel those blue eyes piercing straight through his soul. After the amount of heartache he put Kurt through, he knew he deserved it. He wasn't even afraid to admit it.
"What do you want, Blaine?" Kurt spoke through gritted teeth.
He couldn't help but smile a little at the sound of his voice. Even if it was laced with anger and hate. It had been months since he heard it.
It was a simple question, really. But in Blaine's mind, there was so much more to it. He didn't even know where to begin. He wanted to be with him, wanted to hold his hand and never let go, wanted to be able to lean down and kiss him just because he could. He wanted Kurt to be his.
"I-" he began, ready to release all of his feelings. However, the glare and small shaking of the head coming from Rachel made him panic. So he stopped himself.
"Talk, to you. I-I just want to talk. To you." He said, finally, stumbling over his words.
Kurt just stared at him, his eyes softening. He looked over at Rachel, trying to read her face, seeing if he even had a chance.
"Please," Blaine breathed the word barley even audible.
Kurt looked back up at him, his expression unreadable. The anger and the hurt were gone, putting a small ounce of hope inside Blaine.
"I- I just can't, Blaine." Kurt spoke so softly, his eyes starting to glisten with unshed tears, Blaine wasn't sure if he heard him correctly. "I'm sorry."
He nodded. He understood, he really did. When he walked into the Lima Bean today he put his guard up, setting himself up for rejection. Only, his guard had fallen. The moment he saw Kurt's smiling face he thought that he might have the slightest chance.
Blaine turned away, starting to feel the tears pricking at his eyes. He didn't want to cry, not in front of Kurt and everyone else. He would save that for when he reached his car, where he would beat himself up over how stupid he was.
Three months and seventeen days ago, Kurt had told Blaine that he loved him. Three months and sixteen days ago, Blaine ran. He ran away for a solid three months. Then thought that he could return out of the blue and be accepted by Kurt with open arms.
You deserve the hatred, he reminded himself as his fist collided with he steering wheel. You really deserve it, you dumbass. You broke his heart.
It was only then did Blaine let the tears slowly begin to fall.
