Blaine sat on the cold metal seat of the New York subway, his hand gripping Kurt's, Kurt's head on his shoulder. The brunette almost asleep. It had been a long day. Kurt had opened his first night in a broadway show. He shook it off as no big deal, it was only a supporting role. But Blaine had decided from the very beginning that it was ahugedeal.
But even though Blaine had persisted for weeks, Kurt didn't want to go out and make a huge deal out of his opening night. His family and friend's weren't all coming until a few days after, so he decided that after that performance he could celebrate.
After barely fifteen minutes on the mostly empty subway, Kurt was half asleep on Blaine's shoulder. Blaine was glad they hadn't gone out, Kurt needed his rest. He'd had a very big day.
The doors to the subway opened and he watched as a couple that looked like they couldn't be much older than he and Kurt entered the subway car. The woman walked on, carrying a little girl that looked like she couldn't have been more than a year old. Her hair was light brown and pulled up in an aodrable half-ponytail. She was wearing a purple dress that was covered in white and mint green polka-dots. Her eyes were a bright green that practically matched the spots on her dress. Her dad followed soon after carrying a large diaper bag. He sat down on the seat next to where the woman and little girl were seated a kissed her on the cheek. She sqealed with joy.
Blaine smiled and drew his eyes from the girl so it didn't appear he was staring. But when he looked back up the little girl was looking at him, eyes wide. He shot grin at her and she beamed.
Blaine could have sworn that the entire world stopped. He responded with a smile back to her. His heart pounded so loud he was shocked it didn't wake Kurt up. Sure, he'd thought about telling Kurt about wanting kids. But now wasn't the time. Kurt's was finally getting to perform. He was getting to do exactly what he'd wanted to do since he was a kid.
But Blaine wondered if it would be unfair for him try to begin living his dream, right after Kurt had just began getting to expirience his.
He'd always wanted kids. He'd always wanted someone to call him 'Daddy'. He'd wanted to expirience the middle of the night feedings. He wanted to teach someone to ride a bike. The spit-up, and the band-aids. He decided when he was in high school, that he wanted someone to depend on him the way that he depended on his dad. He wanted to be there for someone. He wanted someone for him to love no matter what. Someone that would need him.
Granted, Kurt had told him that he wasn't opposed to having kids. But at the same time, he told Blaine he wasn't sure about all of the different ways of them to obtain that kid.
'It's not like we can have sex unprotected one night and bam! There's a baby'He'd said on multiple occasions when the conversation had come up.
They both knew that surrogacy was an option, but that was expensive. They'd considered foster care, but they'd always heard the stories of people having to give the children back. And he and Kurt weren't sure they were okay with that.
So their only viable option was adoption. The only thing stopping them from that was the possibility of being rejected. They'd heard the horror stories of same sex couples being rejected at agencies and not being able to get a child. They knew they didn't want the heartbreak of that.
Blaine looked up from his spot on the subway where they were to see that they were approaching the stop that he and his husband of only six months needed to get off on. He gently shook Kurt off of his shoulder and kissed him on the forehead.
"We're at our stop, sleeping handsome." He smiled a little as Kurt's grey-eyes blinked open.
Kurt made a tiny noise that sounded like an adorable cross between a groan and a whimper. Blaine ran a hand through Kurt's hair and kissed him on the hand that he was holding.
"Come on, we'll catch a taxi back to the house." He smiled at how cute Kurt appeared when so tired.
The entirety of the ten minute cab ride with Kurt was spent with small snores coming from the counter-tenor. Blaine smiled at the head in his lap and ran his hands through Kurt's hair.
The only thing that was louder than the tiny snores were the thoughts running through Blaine's head. He couldn't stop thinking about the couple on the subway. He wanted that. He wanted he and Kurt to be those people that other people looked at and thought 'Wow, they're adorable'. He wanted that little girl in the polka-dotted dress.
He graciously paid the taxi driver and got out of the car. He picked Kurt up and pulled his limp body out of the back-seat and carrying him into their town house. Something Kurt would have completely and totally fought off if he was awake- probably telling Blaine that this was ridiculous and embarassing- but since he was asleep Blaine took the chance to have the close moment with his husband. He unlocked the door with one hand and carried Kurt straight back to his bedroom and put him on the bed. He kissed the older man on the forehead with a smile and went to the bathroom to brush his teeth.
He was sure Kurt would yell at him in the morning for not waking him to do his moisturizing and to brush his own teeth. But Blaine had decided he was too tired for that now. He splashed water up into his face from the sink and wiped it quickly with a towel. Stripping down to his boxer-briefs, Blaine entered the bedroom again and pulled down the covers and pulled them over Kurt, before climbing into bed himself.
He settled into the bed and Kurt slowly gravitated to Blaine's chest, where he layed his chest. Blaine yawned and shut off the lamp next to his bed. Kurt shuffled into his sleep pulled himself closer to Blaine. Kurt shifted, eyes meeting Blaine's quickly.
"Hey," Blaine ran a hand through Kurt's hair. "Go back to sleep."
"I can't you're thinking about something so hard, I can hear it." Kurt chuckled a little bit. Blaine followed suit. "What are you thinking about?"
"Just a lot of things." Blaine answered.
"We haven't even been married a year. I know you can't be thinking about leaving me Mr Anderson-Hummel." Kurt joked.
Blaine snapped his finger in mock dissapointment. "Well now that you know I've been thinking about it I'll have to stick around a little longer." He sighed with a laugh at the end. Kurt giggled and snuggled further into Blaine.
"But what were you thinking about?" Kurt questioned once again.
Blaine's mind wandered to summer days, with a little girl with light brown hair like the girl on the subway. Playing in the backyard of their house - They'd have to get a playset for her- running, blowing bubbles. Kurt could teach her how to match her outfits in the morning. Blaine could teach her how to play piano. They'd both teach her how to sing. She'd call Kurt 'Papa' and Blaine 'Daddy'.
He thought about all of the times they'd babysat for their friends. It started with Tina and Mike. After she'd graduated with Blaine she and Mike had been reunited. They got married only a few weeks after she'd gotten her degree to be a kindergarten teacher, and had their first child Rylee almost immediately after. She was barely twenty-two. Rylee had everyone wrapped around her little finger, considering she was the first glee club baby.
The year Rylee was turning two, everyone that used to be a part of New Directions decided to begin their families.
Mercedes and Sam welcomed their first child, Oliver in January. He had soft black hair and an adorable dark complexion. Kurt was named Oliver's godfather.
Quinn and Puck decided that March that they wanted to give their hand to foster care. They're now adopted five year old daughter Abby, came into their lives that April.
And that November, Finn and Rachel welcomed an adorable set of twin girls into the world. Adrian and Olivia were the light of Finn and Rachel's lives. And each of the girls had a different godfather. Kurt being Adrian's and Blaine being Olivia's. Each of the little girl's had Kurt and Blaine on a tiny leash, in which they knew they could get anything they wanted.
The husbands often found themselves playing house, watching their friends kids. They'd often found it was easiest to take care of Abby, considering there was no diaper changing or bottle feedings involved. But that didn't make them love watching Adrian, Olivia, or Oliver any less.
But now less than two years after that, Kurt and Blaine found themselves at twenty six and barely twenty five years old , and the last of their friends to have kids.
They didn't seem like they were behind. They just felt like everyone else was ahead of them.
"It's stupid. Now's not the time." He tried his best to push the thoughts from his mind.
"Blaine, I know you wanna talk about it. Speak." He smiled sleepily.
"I want a baby." Blaine finally gave in and said with a sigh. He watched Kurt's reaction, expecting him to roll his eyes at Blaine.
"Me too.." Kurt looked Blaine right in the eyes.
Blaine sighed, prepared to begin his argument to Kurt about how he 'really wasn't thinking when he said it' when his head popped up. "You do?!"
"Since Rylee was born and you held her for the first time infront of me, I knew I wanted to have a family with you." Kurt said simply. "I just didn't know when the right time would be. I think now might be a good time.."
Blaine was so relieved he wanted to cry. "Oh my god Kurt."
"I love you so much." Kurt leaned in and kissed his husband.
"I love you too." Blaine's lips met Kurt's and they collided, he felt a tear running down his cheek.
Tonight, they'd go to sleep. Dreaming of the family they were destined to be. Tomorrow they'd look at adoption agencies online. And hopefully a year from now, they'd be that family. They'd have that toddler sized polka-dot dress.
