Blaine found comfort in the way Kurt sighed in his sleep.
It was a silly thing, really. The first time Blaine and Kurt shared a bed, Kurt's eyes had drooped and eventually his breathing slowed. Blaine had been busy staring at Kurt's innocent features when the first sigh left Kurt's lips. It was soft, trailing through the air like music. Blaine automatically felt this sort of calm wash over him, and he soon fell asleep.
After their first time together, the sigh was suddenly only one of Blaine's favorite noises Kurt made. Kurt's breathy moans and needy whimpers had a whole category of their own. The sigh was still the most precious sound in the world.
On Kurt and Blaine's wedding night, they made love three times. Blaine had whispered sentiments into every part of his husband's skin he could reach, feeling happier than he had ever been before. Kurt had reluctantly fallen asleep first. That night, Kurt's sigh was more content than Blaine had ever heard it before.
There were nights when Blaine would come home from work, exhausted and grumbling. He would choke down some food and wearily make his way towards the bed, barely stripping off any clothing before laying down next to his husband. Blaine would think about the idiots he had to work with, annoyance replacing exhaustion, and then Kurt would sigh slightly, and Blaine would be entranced. He had Kurt to thank for his success in many ways, and this was one of them.
When little Elizabeth came into their lives, there wasn't much time for sleep. She was beautiful with her thick lashes and bright blue eyes. She also had a nice set of lungs on her if her crying was anything to go by. And yet, Kurt and Blaine had never been happier. Kurt would sigh even while awake now, his mouth always turned upwards and his eyes always sparkling.
The last time Blaine heard Kurt sigh, they were old men. Kurt had battled cancer for many years, and his body was simply too weak to go on. He had stared at Blaine intensely, no trace of fear in his eyes. “I love you,” he had said, and then he sighed, his eyes drooping shut. He never woke back up.
