Author's Notes: Yeah. Angsty.

Kurt’s funeral occurs not many days after Blaine’s, long enough for him to get all the affairs in order, to ensure that their children are in good health, and then one morning the nurse that stops in to check on them finds him curled around a picture of Blaine, long gone. Kurt’s very relieved when death comes for him, and Blaine, or rather a younger version of Blaine (the one Kurt saw on the steps at Dalton all those years ago) is holding out his hand and pulling him into a whole other universe. As Kurt enters his gray hair returns to its former glory and his hands are no longer traced by veins with a skeletal oldness. Blaine grins, “Come on, Kurt, there are so many people that have been waiting for you!” Kurt’s jaw drops, “Blaine?” Blaine squeezed his hand, “It’s weird, I know, but I’ve only been here a few days and I’m used to it already. Just don’t overthink it. Now let’s go, there’s so much to do before your funeral.” Kurt raised an eyebrow, “Before my funeral?” Blaine nods, “Yeah, they let you watch it so you can, well its hard to explain. You can’t actually influence anything, but...I’ll have your mom explain it.”

Kurt’s eyes light up, “You’ve seen my mom? Oh my god, where is she?” Blaine grins, “Right this way. And you were right Kurt, she’s brilliant. And your dad and Carole, and my parents. And oh my god, Coop. Coop would not shut up about you. He got rather frustrated with me when I didn’t come for you right away.” Kurt gives him a confused glance, “Come for me?” Blaine opens a wide set of gold doors, “Yes, um, whenever you die, you are in charge of sending for your very special person.” Kurt swallows and is about to question it further, but then he sees her. A woman, she’s young, thirty-three at most. Her hair is a shiny chestnut color, her skin alabaster pale, and her eyes are bright blue. Kurt freezes for a moment, watching as the woman opens her eyes wide and her lips form his name. Then he’s running, all years of maturity forgotten, “Mom!” Kurt launches himself into her arms, before realizing that he’s no longer the size of an eight year old boy. The woman staggers back a little, patting his back, “Kurt, honey, momma missed you.” Kurt sobs into her shoulder, “Missed you too. So much.” Kurt pulls back a little and feels Blaine’s arm snake around his waist, Kurt turns into him, then back to his mom, “M-mom, this is Blaine, he’s m-my...um, he’s my husband. Blaine this is my mom, Elizabeth Hummel.” Blaine raises a hand in greeting, and the woman smiles, “Honey, I know. I’m the one that sent you to him.” Kurt’s quirks an eyebrow, “You what?” Elizabeth grins knowingly, “Do you remember that day? How you almost didn’t go to Dalton? Do you know what changed your mind?” Kurt swallows, “No. I just, h-had a feeling.” Elizabeth nods and is about to say something when Burt and Carole and a man Kurt doesn’t recognize come around a corner.

Kurt wiggles out of Blaine’s arm, making a mad dash for his father, “Dad!” Burt laughs and hugs his son tight, “Hey buddy, how’ve you been?” Kurt blinks away a tear and kisses his dad’s cheek, something he hasn’t done for nearly seventy years, “Missed you. Lots.” Before Burt can reply Kurt’s wrapping Carole up in a hug, “God. And you too, missed you too.” Carole smiles and pats Kurt on the back, “I know honey, but you’re here now.” Kurt nodded and took a step back, looking between his father, his mother, his step-mother, and the man he did not know, “Um...I’m sorry but, who are you?” The man started to explain but Blaine beat him to it, “Um Kurt, say hello to Finn’s dad.” Kurt’s eyes bugged out of his head, “You’re Finn’s dad?” The man nodded an extended a hand, “Nice to meet you son, I’ve seen you a lot.” Kurt raised an eyebrow looking to the others for explanation, and it was Elizabeth that gave it, “What he means sweetie, is that when we leave someone behind, we’re granted the ability to watch them, even if we can’t help them. I was able to watch you and your dad, Bradley here was able to watch Finn and Carole, and you and Blaine will be able to watch Kellan with Emma and their children, and Aria with Savannah and their son.” Kurt smiled at Blaine, “C-can we see them? I miss them so much already.” Blaine nodded and offered Kurt his arm, “We will, but first we’re gonna go watch the funeral.” Kurt looked at him like he was nuts, “Blaine honey, it takes days to plan a funeral. There’s no way.” Blaine just shook his head and pulled Kurt into something resembling the theater from The Notebook, “It’s already been a week down there, time passes differently for us now.”

Before Kurt could have a chance to question it, the screen comes to life displaying a large open grassy area, covered with ruby folding chairs and gorgeous Tiger Lillies. Blaine down a throws an arm around Kurt’s shoulders, motioning for him to keep quiet, not even noticing as Carole, Bradley, Elizabeth, Cooper, The Anderson, and Burt file in. Kurt watches the screen as people begin to slowly fill the chairs. At the front row are Kurt and Blaine’s grandchildren, their oldest daughter Aria with her wife Savannah, and Kellan’s wife Emma. Behind them is everyone that still remains of the New Directions, a sprinkling of Warblers. The rest of the seats are filled by co-workers, mentors, students of Kurt’s, family friends, it’s safe to say it’s a full house. At the front stands Rachel and Finn’s daughter Maria, singing softly:

It’s time for us to part, yes it’s best for us to part
Oh but I love you, ooooooo, I love you
Take care of yourself, I’ll miss you
The nights are long alone
I sit alone and moan
Oh cause I love you, ooo, I love you
Take care of yourself, I’ll miss you
And no more tears to cry,
I'm out of goodbyes
It's time for us to part,
Although it breaks my heart
Oh, 'cause I love you
Ooooh, I love you
Take care of yourself,
Take care of yourself,
Take care of yourself
I love you

Everyone claps lightly as she finishes her song, and she does a small curtsy. She takes the microphone off the stand, “I’d like to thank you all for being here today, although I wish I were seeing you under better circumstances. If you’d all please rise.” Everyone stands and a pearly white casket is brought in from the right, carried by Kellan, a blondish boy Kurt recognizes as Maria’s husband, Finn and Rachel’s son, and although it breaks Kurt’s heart, Aria and Savannah’s son. The casket is placed on a pedestal behind the microphone and the pall-bearers all go to sit in a roped off section of chairs. Maria closes her eyes for a minute, centering herself, “And now Kellan would like to say a few words.”

Everyone clapped lightly, and Kellan stood up, straightening his tux. Maria sat next to her mother and father after handing him the microphone and squeezing his hand gently. Kellan cleared his throat, “My Papa, was never a very religious man, as well you all probably know, and if not I’m sure you learned three weeks ago in this exact spot. Being not very religious, is the reason I am here today before you, as opposed to a preacher or a priest. And I’d just like to leave you with some words about my Papa. When I was seven, my grandpa Burt died. And I remember holding Aria and Daddy’s hand while my Papa stood closer to the casket with Uncle Finn. They were lowering him to the ground, and all I wanted was a sign that it could be better. That just because my grandpa was gone, didn’t mean we were going to be sad all the time. And that’s when my Papa began to sing, and he sang The Beatles song I Want To Hold Your Hand. We walked away that day, my dads hand in hand, with Aria and I on either side, and I remember thinking that as we left, as long as Papa sang, everything was going to be okay. And for the rest of my life, it seemed like he had a song for every time I was feeling down. When I was eleven I tore my ACL, and they said I’d never get to play football again. I’d be able to run, but football would be out of the question, and I was devastated. I remember I got home and he started to sing, Stand by Lenny Kravitz. I was seventeen the when I had my first heartbreak, and try as they might, my dads just couldn’t bring me out of it. Then one day Papa woke me up singing The Day Before You by Rascal Flatts, and every time I see Emma, I can still hear his voice in my head, singing that song. And when Carly came along, I was scared to death, and Papa came through with yet another song, Isn’t She Lovely by Stevie Wonder. There have been so many things in my life that Papa has made better with just a couple verses, and for that I am truly thankful. So Papa, wherever you are now, tell Daddy I love him and remember that I’ll always love you.” Kurt wiped away a tear and Blaine’s arm tightened as they watched Aria and Savannah stand up together.

Aria unfolds a piece of paper and hands it to Savannah, who squeezes her around the shoulders and begins to read aloud, “I’d like to start off, with thanking you all for coming here today, to celebrate the life of Kurt Anderson-Hummel. I’m very sad that we had to gather here again so soon after my Daddy’s passing, but I know it’s for the best. Each of you have met them, most of you knew them before I was born, and anyone who had met them, even for a moment at a stoplight, would recognize the fact that they were two pieces of a whole, never meant to be apart. I remember being young, and Uncle Finn and Uncle Wes would tell me stories about my dads when they were younger. I remember asking them once what each of them was like before they met each other, and even though Finn spoke of my Papa, and Wes of my Daddy, they said the exact same thing, ‘Empty. Not happy, nor unhappy. Not alive or dead. Just empty. Just a hollow shell of a person.’ And I was eleven at the time and did not fully understand how being without a person could make you feel empty inside. However, after meeting my wife, Savannah, I think I’ve come to understand that statement a little bit more. I know now, that you don’t need your soul mate to live, no you’ll do just fine without them. But you’ll be missing out on something. You’ll only ever have half the package. And you won’t be truly living, you’ll just be that empty shell of a person. And I know that if my Papa were here, he would tell you not to cry for him. Not to ruin your pretty little KAH handkerchiefs over it, because he’s much happier now. Actually, better than that, I’m sure he’d sing for you. And I know just the song--” Savannah looks to Aria, and in a raise of an eyebrow you can see her asking, Can you do this? And in the slight nod of her head Aria says, I’ve got this.

It won’t be easy, you’ll think it’s strange
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love after all that I’ve done
You won’t believe me, all you will see
Is the man you once knew,
although he’s dressed up to the nines, at sixes and sevens with you
I had to let it happen
I had to change
Couldn’t stay all my life down at heel
Staring out of the window, staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom, Running around
Trying everything new,
But nothing impressed me at all, I never expected it to
Don’t Cry For Me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days, my mad existence
I kept my promise, don’t keep your distance
And as for fortune and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired
They are illusions, they are not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me
Don’t Cry For Me Argentina
Have I said too much?
There’s nothing more I can think of to say to you
But all you have to do is look at me to know
That every word is true

When Aria finished her song everyone stood and clapped. Starting from the front, people stood one by one and said their last good byes to Kurt Anderson-Hummel. As everyone files off, Kellan and Emma hold their son’s hands, who join hands with Neil (Aria and Savannah’s son), and he grabs Aria’s hand, who takes Savannah’s hand. They form a circle around the casket and one of the cemetery workers begins to lower it in the ground. Savannah squeezes Aria’s hand, Aria squeezes Neil’s, Neil squeezes his youngest cousin Kurt (jr) hand, and Kurt squeezed his older brother Jeff’s hand, and the squeeze continued until it made it to Kellan. As it reaches him Kellan opens his mouth, and his sister joins in, “Blackbird singing in the dead of night. Take these broken wings and learn to fly. All your life you were only waiting for this moment to arise.” When their wives recognize the song, they join in, “Blackbird singing in the dead of night. Take these sunken eyes and learn to see. All your life you were only waiting for this moment to be free.” Neil, at the age of sixteen had heard the story of the song many times, and he too joined in, “Blackbird fly, blackbird fly, into the light of the dark black night. Blackbird fly, blackbird fly, into the light of the dark black night.” Jeff is only twelve but he too knows the song, so he wraps an arm around his little brother’s shoulders and sings too, “Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly. All your life you were only waiting for this moment to arise. All your life you were only waiting for this moment to arise.” Kurt Jr is four, but he recognizes that the last line will repeat and he adds to it, “All your life you were only waiting for this moment arise.

The screen fades to black as Kurt watches his children and grandchildren throw dirt onto his casket. When it’s over he turns to Blaine, and he smiles. Yes he’s going to miss his children. But Kurt looks at his husband, and it’s only been three weeks since he’s seen him, but he feels like it’s been a life time. Kurt throws his arms around Blaine’s neck and half sobs half laughs into his shoulder. Blaine repeats the noise, and squeezed him tightly. Blaine stands up and offers Kurt his hand, “There’s so much I want to show you.” Kurt grins, “Like what?” Blaine whispers so that their parents don’t quite hear, “Well for one the bedroom’s are immaculate.” Kurt frowns, “Honey you know Dr. Kiefner said we couldn’t...” Blaine grinned and took Kurt’s hand, placing it on his heart, “Oh but my dear, we can.”
