Blaine had been coming over for Friday night dinners, ever since Kurt had left for New York. That is why Burt thought it strange that Blaine would cancel following his return from visiting Kurt.
Burt had asked Finn, who, even though he knew, felt it was not his place to explain things to Burt about Kurt and Blaine's current relationship status.
After the third cancellation from Blaine, and still not hearing anything was wrong from Kurt, Burt took matters into his own hands. He was after all a father and that is what fathers do. when one of their kids is in trouble. Blaine was no exception, he was a third son to him.
"Hello?" Blaine answered his phone, half asleep, sure it was four in the afternoon, but he had been doing a lot of sleeping since that night. Hoping one of the times he woke up, it was all just one big nightmare.
"Saying no is not an option, Kid." Burt's voice was strong and demanding. "You and me, we are going to sit down to a Saturday night dinner, and catch the game. I expect you here in a half hour. Carole and Finn are out, and well I am ordering pizza."
"I...I can't." Blaine stammered into the phone, rubbing sleep from his eyes. "I have plans."
"No is not an option! Remember? Be here at Five o'clock."Burt said firmly then disconnected the call.
Blaine wasn't sure what to expect. Had Kurt called him and told him about them, about what he did? Was this going to be one of those I trusted you with my son's heart and you tore it to shreds lectures?
Blaine groaned as he stood and looked over his appearance. Screw the gel. He ran his fingers through his hair and straightened his clothes. He didn't really care what he looked like. What was the sense? He no longer had Kurt, he just wanted to get through the rest of the school year, left alone.
The pizza ordered, and the game playing, Burt kept glancing at his watch.Just as he was getting ready to call Blaine, the doorbell rang. He didn't think it would be Blaine, because honestly, for as polite as that kid was, once he and Kurt had begun dating, this was his second home, and he always just walked in.
Opening the door and seeing Blaine standing there was a surprise. "Blaine? Since when do you ring the doorbell, son?"
Blaine faltered. "I wasn't sure if I was even still welcome here."
Now Burt was even more perplexed. "Why would you not be welcome here? Come on get in the door, pizza is on the coffee table and the game is playing."
"If Kurt knew you were eating pizza..."
"What Kurt doesn't know, well he doesn't need to know everything." Burt patted Blaine on the back.
"So tell me. How was New York? How is Kurt? He must be busy, I have not heard from him, since before you went to visit." Burt exploded all of his questions at once, not giving Blaine a chance to answer.
"Uh, New York was you know, New York, Kurt...you uh...you would have to ask him. We aren't exactly talking right now."
"What do you mean you aren't exactly talking?" Burt shook his head.
"I did something, and I hurt him. He won't answer my calls or my texts."
"I am listening. What did you do?" Burt's jaw was set firm as he listened to Blaine speak.
"After many missed attempts at getting to talk to Kurt, I started a conversation with some guy who had Katy Perry and Show Choir as his interests, on Facebook." Blaine paused to take a deep breath.
"I can't see Kurt getting upset over a conversation."Burt used Blaine's pause to try and understand.
"After one particular exchange, he asked me over to his place and I went. I just needed someone to talk to, someone who wanted to listen to me."
"Okay, you hung out with a friend." Burt was starting to get frustrated.
"Oh,no, he most definitely is not a friend." Blaine quickly exclaimed, getting very nervous, Burt could see the kid was actually sweating.
"Fine, you hung out with another guy."
"He offered me a drink. I took it. Next thing I new, I was getting dressed and running to New York to be with Kurt." Blaine tried to simplify the rest of the story to not have to talk about it.
"What the hell do you mean getting dressed?" Burt yelled. "You cheated on my son? While he is in New York starting a future that he wanted you to be a part of?"
Blaine shrunk back in the cushions of the sofa. "I didn't go over there with plans to cheat."
"Let me guess, it just happened." Burt scowled.
"You know what, I can't answer that." Blaine jumped up. "It doesn't matter how it happened, what matters is what did happen, I brought on myself for going over there. Thank you for the invitation, Mr. Hummel. I would rather be alone now."
Burt just realized and he didn't know why he hadn't seen it before Blaine called him Mr. Hummel, he hasn't done that since, well it seems like forever, but Blaine was a physical and now emotional mess.
"What do you mean how? These things usually take two people to happen." Burt stood and faced Blaine. What was that he saw in this boy's eyes? Fear, hurt, shame?
"With all do respect, Sir.This is one of the times, two people did not participate." With those words spoken, Blaine ran out the door, leaving Burt standing there in shocked silence.
It has been a week since that Saturday evening. Burt has not heard from or seen Blaine, and he was getting worried. Finn had said that Blaine had been acting lost and alone during Glee club, all week.
Sitting in the school parking lot, parked beside Blaine's car, is where being concerned found him. He had to understand what Blaine had meant. Fearing he already knew the answer.
Blaine walked towards his car, his head hung low, the messenger bag slung over his shoulder. The only way Burt could describe him, was the kid looked like shit.
Slowly, Burt got out of his truck and once Blaine reached him, he didn't know what to say, and just pulled him into a hug.
Blaine stiffened at first, then collapsed into Burt, heavy sobs wracking his body. "I said no." were the only words he spoke through his sobs and tears, clinging tightly to the man he had come to see as being a father to him.
"Did you go to the police? A doctor?" Burt asked quietly as the boy calmed down.
"No, don't you get it. I deserved it. For not trusting that Kurt still loved me, for having doubts about our relationship. I deserved what happened then and everything that has happened since." Blaine sobbed.
"What do you mean, everything that has happened since?" Burt pulled back and looked into his eyes. "Son, what the hell is going on?"
"You know about the Sadie's Hawkins incident. Well that caused tension between my parents and I. Now this, tension has turned into an erupting volcano." Blaine wiped away the tears from his eyes and cheeks. "Like my dad said though. I have to man up, accept my punishment and move on." He stepped away from Burt and opened his car door.
Burt grabbed Blaine's arm, shocked, when his sleeve pushed up, showing multiple dark spots. All in varying shades of purple, black, yellow, and green. "Blaine...what?"
"My punishment." Blaine shrugged as he pulled his arm free.
"Your dad?" Burt asked, already knowing the answer.
Blaine merely nodded. "I have to go. I have to be home by a certain time."
"You are right about going home." Burt said. "You are coming home with me."
