The Second Star To The Right

A simple drabble inspired by the night sky outside of my window. Set at the end/after 3x05. The title is shamelessly stolen from Disney.

Blaine gets out of bed, trying to keep quiet, trying not wake anyone up. Slowly, he pads closer to the window, his sock-covered feet barely making any sound on the cold floor.

The chill of the night comes in and he shivers in his thin pajamas, but it’ll be worth it as soon as he spots… There it is.

A star, the brightest of them all, shines right next to the moon, and the sight of it still warms his heart, even after all these years of gazing at it.

Technically, Blaine knows it’s Venus, but in his mind he can’t help but call it Vesper, “the Evening Star”, just like his mother would in the bedtime stories she used to tell him. He vividly remembers waiting for the lights to be turned off and for his parents to go downstairs so he could sit by the window and wish upon the stars.

It had always been little boy wishes, like a new toy or a pet. Even after he’d grown up and realised it was useless to wish on stars, he had still asked Vesper for his parents to accept him as gay, then for his father to be more understanding and for the bullies to stop.

It hadn’t woked that time, but even after transferring at Dalton he’d kept up his tradition. It couldn’t hurt to try, could it? At least it gave him some hope that somewhere, underneath that same sky, there was someone just for him.

And so he’d wished. And wished. Until one day, on a staircase, that someone stopped him and asked him what was going on.

Blaine turns towards his bed, where Kurt is still sleeping on his back, arm stretched out towards the place Blaine’s body had been, his soft breathing even and reassuring. He keeps being amazed by how beautiful his boyfriend is, even in the simplest of things. Blaine cherishes his every smile, kiss, look. He memorizes all the details that make him so unbelievably Kurt and puts them away for safekeeping, to take out on rainy days.

So tonight Blaine looks up at Vesper, smiles, and whispers, “Thank you.”
