Sandboxes
8 year old little Kurt Hummel never really minded playing at the park alone, he was perfectly happy to wander around in his own little world while the other kids played tag or hide and seek. At least, that's what he thought before he encountered a messy haired little Blaine Anderson.

Kurt tugged on his mother's hand as they walked down the sidewalk, on their way to the park — Kurt's favourite place to visit. Sure, he would usually play alone on the swings or read a book in the play tower, occasionally playing with a little girl named Mercedes, but he didn't mind being alone. At least, that's what he thought before he met a messy haired little boy. When the two reached the park, his mother opted to watch from a bench towards the front of the park while Kurt ran off to the playground, heading right for the sandbox.
Kurt huffed, blowing a stray piece of hair out of his face as he glared down at the sand beneath him. He was trying to build a sandcastle, but the sand didn't seem to be cooperating. When he heard someone clear their throat above, his eyes trailed up slowly, blue locking with what seemed to be hazel, but more of a honey colour with specks of green and gold. The boy standing over Kurt was little shorter than Kurt himself, though he was sitting down, and his head was a mop of black, unruly curls.
"D'you — erm — want some help?" the boy asked nervously, shuffling his feet.
Kurt had almost forgotten about the sandcastle he was trying to build when the boy showed up. He blushed, looking down at his feet. "I'd like that."
The boy grinned and flopped down across from Kurt in the box. Kurt watched in interest as the boy scooped sand in Kurt's little red bucket, flipping it over carefully so the sand would hold. The boy's tongue was poking out of his mouth slightly as he concentrated. He turned the bucket upside down and clapped wildly when the sand took the perfect form of a castle, unlike Kurt's clump from before.
Kurt stared in amazement, his blue eyes almost bugging out of his sockets. "How'd you do that?"
Blaine shrugged, causing his curls to bounce slightly. "I 'unno. Just did it."
Kurt giggled at the boy's modesty, and stuck out his hand, careful not to knock over the castle. "I'm Kurt. Kurt Hummel."
Blaine grinned back, grabbing Kurt's hand in his. "I'm Blaine! Blaine Anderson, and you're my new best friend, Kurt!"
Kurt giggled once again at Blaine's enthusiasm. He wasn't prepared for Blaine's next action, which involved the shorter boy leaping over to tackle Kurt to the ground. Kurt squeaked, holding Blaine for a moment before realization hit him.
"Blaine! Blaine, Blaine!" he squealed, pushing the boy off of him. "You got sand in my hair," he pouted.
Blaine frowned, backing up. "I'm sorry. I didn' mean to. Here, I'll get it out," he offered, leaning back over to brush the little crystals out of Kurt's hair. Kurt closed his eyes, feeling his face heat up at the action. His eyes only fluttered open when he heard Blaine speak again.
"There, all better! Now your hair is just as perfect as before." This caused Kurt to blush again. He opened his mouth to say thank you, but he heard his mother calling his name. He looked behind him, seeing his mom waving him over.
"Sorry, my mommy's calling for me. I have to go."
Blaine's mouth turned downward and he watched as Kurt stood, brushing the sand off of his shorts. "Wait, wait! Kurt!" he called and ran after him. When he was close enough, he wrapped his arms around the taller boy's waist. "Don't go, please," he whined.
Kurt frowned. "But I have to!" but then his face lit up. "Maybe you can come over and have a tea party with me!"
Blaine unhooked his arms from around Kurt's middle, grinning as the other boy took his hand, leading him over to what he guessed was his mother.
"Mommy, can my new friend Blaine come over and have a tea party with me? Please, please?"
Elizabeth smiled down at her son and Blaine. "If it's okay with Blaine's mommy."
At this, Blaine ran over to a bench at the other side of the playground. He tugged on his mother's hand, dragging her back over to where Kurt and Elizabeth were still standing. Blaine looked almost identical to his mother; the same eyes and curly, black hair. Though hers hung down her back, while Blaine's rested just under his ears.
"Mommy, can I please go over to Kurt's house? He said we could have a tea party!"
Blaine's mother laughed. "If it's okay with Kurt's mom, then it's okay with me," she said sweetly, ruffling her son's hair.
When Elizabeth grabbed for Kurt's hand, he reached his own little hand out for Blaine, who took it without hesitation, smiling up at his mother and waving as Elizabeth led the boy's down to their house, Blaine's mother calling out that she would pick him up before bedtime.
The boys spent the next few hours singing along to Disney movies, colouring and as the sun was about to set they decided to play "prince" and have a tea party outside. They both whined when Blaine's mother arrived to take him home, pleading to let him stay until the sun set. Both parents agreed and Kurt dragged Blaine over to a bush. Their hands stayed locked as they stared up at the sky, watching as it grew darker and they started to spot stars.
"M'glad I met you, Kurtie. We'll be best friends always won't we?"
Kurt only nodded in response.
"Promise?"
Smiling, Kurt tilted his head over to the side to look at Blaine. "Promise."
