In the year 2066 many new leaders came to power with the intentions to eliminate problems like rape, domestic abuse, physical bullying, child abuse, and assault. Their method: outlaw physical contact. Of course, in theory this worked. However, what these leaders didn't think about were the many good things, no matter how insignificant, that could come from physical contact: creating new life, the feeling of a lover touching your skin, best friends helping each other with their hair before prom, helping the elderly get around, conveying feelings that could not be put into words through your body; these things no longer existed.
But of course, with every law there are people of defy it. The majority of the rebels who do, are among the people who can still remember a life when they could touch other human beings. The other people in the rebellion are simply those who cannot live without the contact of another. These rebels seek comfort in dark alleys and night-covered areas where the law doesn't seem to look. In the cover of night these people embrace, hold hands, sit with their shoulders pressed to each other, and kiss.
Missing out on these things was never a big deal for Kurt Hummel, he was part of the new generation who were born into this world. The generation that would never experience physical contact. At least, not outside his home. Upon the death of his mother, in the privacy of his own home, he was hugged for the first time since his birth by his father. And up until recently he'd been okay with that. Up until recently he hadn't minded the laws. That was the case, until he met Blaine Anderson.
Blaine Anderson too, was born not ever experiencing physical contact, and at school it was a subject never touched on by teachers. The night he came out to his parents his father had raised his hand angrily, Blaine didn't understand what this meant but his mother cried in panic "Gary, the law!" and that was it, nothing happened. Even when he asked his mother about this law she just smiled and said she'd tell him when he was older but that didn't stop Blaine from wondering. He wondered why his mother and father never hugged him, he wondered why he wasn't allowed to shake people's hands, Blaine wondered about everything that had been unknowingly stolen from him, before he was even born.
When they first met, Kurt and Blaine acted no differently than they did when they met any other person. Of course by now, they were both old enough to understand that physical contact had been outlawed about ten years before their births. But, it wasn't like physical contact never existed. The books from that time still did, despite the government trying to erase them from history and libraries, and those books were Kurt and Blaine's favourites.
Over the next few months Kurt and Blaine were inseparable, they spent all of their free time together. They swapped old books and recommended titles to each other, but something began to change. The books often talked about a man and a woman holding each other in many ways; faces cradled in hands, hands encasing each other, bodies held closely together in sleep... and both boys began to think of what it would be like to hold the other. But, they kept these thoughts to themselves, scared of speaking them aloud.
A few months later, Blaine admitted to Kurt of his feelings. Kurt returned them of course, and they began a relationship. Relationships still did exist in this new time, but they were a lot less passionate as the time before. So, they kept themselves at a respectable distance. Until the night of their third month together.
"Don't you ever just think about it though?" Blaine questioned Kurt for the thousandth time since they met. They were walking home after seeing a late movie together, Blaine lived nearby so it wasn't as if he'd have to walk far to get himself home.
Kurt sighed, "Of course I have. How could I not?" he eyed Blaine with the same awe-filled eyes as he had the day Blaine told him he wanted to be with him.
"We could-" Blaine started in a quiet voice, in that voice that Kurt knew as his voice of persuasion.
"No Blaine," Kurt shook his head sadly. Of course he wanted to do everything with Blaine, but the time that they lived in made that thought an impossible fantasy that would never come true.
"But Kur-" Blaine continued.
"What if we get caught Blaine? We would be banished, and you know what happens in those places outside of ours." Kurt whispered harshly. This was true, not every place on earth had adapted this law, and the countries that didn't became war zones full of violence, rape, fear, and abuse.
Blaine knew this too and he sighed sadly. "I just want to-" he trailed off. Ever since that day he'd met Kurt all he wanted to do was hold Kurt's hands, they looked like they'd be soft.
"I know." Kurt smiled at him sadly.
They continued their walk in silence, both in their own thoughts about touching the other, not in sexual ways it was very early in the relationship for that, and holding them when they were sad rather than just sitting beside them saying "it'll be okay" and "i'm so sorry" apologizing for every comforting hug they couldn't share.
They were soon passing an alley where Kurt suddenly decided to throw caution to the wind and live a little. He turned, walking toward the alley hoping that Blaine would follow. He did of course.
Kurt walked deeper into the dark covering of the alley's shadows making sure they were alone. Once he confirmed that they were in fact by themselves, he walked to Blaine, and stood closer than they had ever been in their time together. Kurt took a steadying breath as Blaine watched him in a curious, almost excited, way. Kurt let his hand find Blaine's forearm and slowly trailed it down until their hands met. They were no longer looking at each other, but at their hands as they took turns caressing the other's. They stayed silent, not needing any words for the moment.
What Blaine did next surprised him, he dropped Kurt's hand softly and launched himself into Kurt's arms almost painfully, knocking the other off balance and almost into the wall of the alley. Kurt's arms locked quickly behind Blaine's neck, and he pulled him as close as he possibly could. He could feel wetness against his neck, so not knowing how to possibly comfort the boy, he played with the hair at the nape of his neck and shushed him quietly. Hi pressed a tender kiss to the top of Blaine's forehead.
They stayed like that until Blaine stopped crying, they stood looking deeply into each other's eyes for a while until Kurt did something he'd wanted to do for a long time. Kurt leaned in and pressed his lips to Blaine's. Neither of them knew what they were doing, but that didn't matter to them. It was just about as awkward as a first kiss could be, but it was such an important action to the two that they didn't care.
Once the broke apart, Kurt wrapped Blaine in a hug once again and squeezed him tightly before they let go and wordlessly turned to leave the alley. Blaine grabbed Kurt's hand before they left and looked at him seriously, "I know that we haven't been together long and everything in this world is messed up, but I really think I'm falling in love with you." Blaine muttered. This didn't take Kurt by surprise, as he'd been feeling the same way toward Blaine.
"I think I am too." Kurt replied, squeezing Blaine's hand and smiling sadly as he dropped it once again.
Though they were two teens in love, the world wasn't ready for the sight yet. But hopefully it would be soon. For now this was all they needed.
