Christmas came and went, followed by New Year and Blaine settled into his new role of boyfriend. He no longer cycled to school, instead Kurt would come pick him up and drop him home. Friday nights became date night, in fact if Blaine had to miss one Kurt became very upset. Blaine had a feeling it was less about abandoning him for the night and more about something deeper. He may be dating Kurt now but he was far from knowing everything about him.
The New Directions, especially the girls, had been happy with their relationship. The jocks, who weren’t in Glee, had been vocal of their dislike but they gave up eventually. Kurt and Blaine weren’t comfortable with public shows of affection so they were forgotten.
While Kurt remained as mute as ever, he appeared to happier than he had been since his father’s death, or so Blaine was told, he smiled more and even laughed occasionally. Their once solitary lunches were now invaded by the New Directions. Mercedes had even gone to the mall with Kurt and Blaine a couple of times.
*
“I want to take you out on date,” Blaine said, climbing into the front seat of the Navigator and leaning across to kiss Kurt. When he pulled away, Kurt raised one eyebrow at him in question.
“It’s our two month-versary this week and we’ve never actually gone out anywhere, apart from the mall and that doesn’t count. So?”
Kurt bit his lip and shook his head slightly but kept his eyes forward, concentrating on the road.
“Look, I know you don’t really want to go to Breadstix but I know somewhere we can go and we’ll be safe, I promise.” Kurt raised an eyebrow again. Blaine grinned, “it’s a surprise so you’ll only find out where this place is if you say yes.” Blaine could just about see Kurt roll his eyes before he nodded and Blaine’s grin got wider. Kurt flashed him a look that Blaine had long since interpreted as a loving ‘you’re such a dork’ look.
*
Friday evening, Blaine pulled the door to his trailer open to see Kurt who had dressed up for the date.
“Wow, just wow,” Blaine said, looking his boyfriend up and down. Kurt shifted slightly uncomfortably under the scrutiny but the little smile on his face told Blaine he was enjoying the attention as well. He was wearing incredibly tight black jeans with a white dress shirt and a silky black waist coat which fitted him perfectly. Blaine in comparison was wearing his best fitting jeans with a black shirt buttoned up over a white t-shirt.
Abruptly Blaine grabbed Kurt’s hand and pulled him into the trailer, closing the door and pushing Kurt back up against it so he could kiss him, undisturbed by some of his more nosy neighbours. Kurt kissed back with equal passion, wrapping arms around Blaine neck.
“You look amazing,” Blaine said when they parted. Kurt blushed and smoothed his hand down Blaine’s shirt, a small coy smile playing on his lips. Blaine stepped back, giving Kurt enough room to straighten creases out of his clothes, to grab the bunch of flowers that sat on the table. “For you,” he said passing them to Kurt, who was starting to make a real habit of the blushing thing.
“Car keys please?” Blaine said after he’d grabbed his wallet and a jacket, holding his hand out for the keys. Kurt frowned and clutched the keys protectively to his chest. Blaine laughed, he knew how much Kurt loved his car. “Come on, I’m taking you out and I couldn’t even pick you up at least let me drive us there. Please,” Blaine wheedled, sliding arms around Kurt’s waist and kissing him again. Once Kurt was sufficiently distracted Blaine slipped the keys from Kurt’s hand and stepped back, triumphantly grinning as he held the keys aloft. Kurt rolled his eyes and huffed in mock irritation.
Blaine carried on his perfect gentleman routine, opening the passenger side door for Kurt before climbing into the driver’s seat. He chattered nervously about random things as he drove until Kurt’s hand gently rested on his thigh. He glanced over to see Kurt gesture with his hand to breathe. Blaine took a deep breath and let music from the radio fill the car. He began to gently sing along to relax himself and the next time he looked at Kurt it was to see the older boy with his eyes closed and a small smile on his face. Blindly Blaine reached for Kurt’s hand that had previously been on his leg, raising it too his lips and kissing the back of his fingers before letting it drop.
Blaine parked the car across the street from Eddie’s diner. He climbed out and dashed around the car to open the door for Kurt. It was dark and the streets weren’t busy so Blaine slid his hand into Kurt’s who tightened his grip slightly. They crossed the street towards the diner.
“I know it’s not the most romantic place ever but the owner kind of has a soft spot for my Mom and me so he won’t let anyone ruin our night. We can be safe and relaxed here, I promise,” Blaine said because he could feel tension running through Kurt’s body next to him. He reached the door and held it open for Kurt. The older boy took a deep breath before stepping in through the door, Blaine following.
He barely had time to be confused by Kurt’s reaction before he heard Eddie’s exclamation. Then the big man rushed out from behind the counter and towards them. When he reached them he wrapped his arms around Kurt, lifting the slight boy off his feet. Blaine watched, eyes wide with confusion, as Kurt wrapped his arms around Eddie’s broad shoulders, Kurt’s body started to shake with sobs.
“Oh my,” Harriet walked up resting her hand on Blaine shoulder. “I didn’t know they knew each other,” she whispered, not wanting to intrude on the moment.
“Me neither,” Blaine whispered back.
Kurt’s feet touched the floor again and the pair pulled away from each other. Eddie looked at Kurt for a little longer, like he couldn’t believe he was there, before turning to Blaine.
“So you’re dating my God son?”
“I… what? I am?” Blaine stuttered, confused as he turned to Kurt looking for some sort of answer. Kurt nodded his head, looking slightly sheepish. “I’m so confused,” Blaine said. Kurt smiled slightly and slipped his hand back into Blaine’s.
“Come on let’s sit,” Eddie sighed and motioned the group towards a booth.
Once the four of them were sat, Eddie began to speak.
“I don’t have kids and I never married but don’t mean I never had a family. When I was a kid I had a best friend, our parents were friends and we grew up together. He was like a brother to me; we sure as hell fought hard enough to be brothers sometimes.
“In high school a girl transferred into the school, prettiest girl you’ve ever seen. Her name was Katherine or Katie for short. Of course we both fell madly in love with her, just like every single guy in school and some not-so single guys too. She was as kind as she was beautiful, she was friends with everyone.
“Of all the guys in the school she chose Burt, my friend. It was a sore point for a while but she helped smooth things over. Eventually I saw that she made the right choice, her and Burt were one of those couples who were just meant to be.
“I stayed friends with them after graduation; I was Burt’s best man at the wedding. I was the first non-family member they told when Katie got pregnant, I was probably the first non-family member to hold their new born son. I teased them mercilessly for combining their names when they named their boy, but I’m glad he carries their names now they’re both gone.” Eddie paused and looked at Kurt, who once again had tears streaming down his face. Blaine turned to him, their hands still clasping each other’s.
“Kurt,” he said quietly, knowing the son in the story was his boyfriend.
“The pictures in your office,” Blaine said after a moment of silence, the photos that had confused Blaine before made sense now. “They’re of Kurt’s parents wedding, and there is a little one of Kurt when he was a kid. Eddie nodded while Kurt huffed and buried his head in his hands, embarrassed that Blaine had seen a picture when he was a kid. “Hey, don’t be shy, you were a cute kid,” Blaine laughed rubbing his boyfriends back.
“I can always even up the playing field, Kurt. I’ve got some hilarious pictures of Blaine when he was little,” Harriet said, patting Kurt’s arm.
“Mom,” Blaine whined. The other three laughed, Kurt lifting his head once more.
“Right,” Harriet said, standing and ushering Eddie out of the booth. “These two are on a date, they don’t need us hovering.” Harriet grabbed Blaine’s arm and manoeuvred him to the opposite side of the booth to Kurt. “Have fun, shout when you want to order,” she said smiling happily as she left.
*
Eddie and Harriet leant against the other side of the counter, watching the two teenagers share an ice cream and secret smiles.
“He looks more and more like his Mom every time I see him,” Eddie said, sighing.
“When did you last see him?” Harriet asked.
“Day of his father’s funeral, Carol said he didn’t want to see me. Broke my heart but I understand, he sees me and he sees his Dad. There ain’t two people who deserved to die less and there ain’t a boy who deserved two parents more than he does.”
“It broke him, didn’t it, losing his father.”
“Yeah, he’s better than last time I saw him though, he’s smiling and laughing now.”
“It’s Blaine, it scares me, a little, how much affect Blaine has on Kurt and how much Kurt affects Blaine. There nothing more than kids, kids who haven’t had the easiest childhood.”
“Maybe that’s why they connect so well. You remind me of Katie you know, so kind and compassionate. You’re a good Mom, Harriet, Blaine’s lucky to have you.”
“I’m lucky to have such a wonderful son.”
“You never know, one day you might have a wonderful son-in-law too.”
“Oh, don’t talk about Blaine getting married, it makes me feel old,” Harriet laughed.
The pair looked back at the young couple, ice cream now finished they were just holding hands over the table and staring at each other.
“They’re in love, have they told each other yet?” Eddie asked.
“Not as far as I know. When did my baby grow up?”
“I don’t know, I close my eyes and I can still see Katie holding this tiny little bundle in her arms and Burt hovering over her, all protective.”
*
“Come on, let’s get out of here, I can feel there gaze burning a hole in my back,” Blaine said, standing up and pulling Kurt with him. Once Kurt was beside him, he dropped his hand a wound an arm around his waist, kissing him lightly on the cheek. They waved goodbye to Eddie and Harriet and left the diner, walking across the street to the car.
Once again Blaine drove. Once he was parked back outside the trailer he looked sideways at Kurt.
“Come inside?” he asked, hopefully, not wanting the evening to end. Kurt nodded and they both left the car.
They sat on the sofa, side by side, facing each other. Blaine cupped Kurt’s cheek.
“You look fantastic tonight, have I said that,” he whispered quietly, a louder voice wasn’t needed when they were so close. Kurt nodded and smiled. Unable to resist any longer Blaine kissed him.
Blaine shifted on the sofa, pushing Kurt gently to lie down while he leant over him, pressing kisses to his jaw, his neck and his lips.
“Of course,” he said and kissed Kurt’s nose, “you always,” a kiss on his cheek, “look gorgeous,” a kiss just below his ear. Blaine moved to kiss down the pale expanse of Kurt’s neck, enjoying the feel of his soft skin and the taste. One particular spot made Kurt gasp and Blaine spent a few moments there. “You are my very favourite thing,” he said looking down into Kurt’s beautiful blue eyes before connecting their mouths again. Kurt’s hands were mapping the contours of Blaine’s upper back and shoulder, sometimes slipping forward to run down his chest.
Without thinking, Blaine reached down and grabbed hold of one of Kurt’s hips. He instantly felt Kurt freeze underneath him and realising he’d crossed a line Blaine sat up, freeing Kurt from under him.
“Sorry,” he said as he pushed himself upright. As soon as he could Kurt scrambled off the sofa and dashed into Harriet’s room, closing the door behind him. Blaine sat and stared at the closed door for a second, stunned.
“Kurt?” he called quietly, knocking on the door and pushing it open. Kurt was sat on the edge of the bed, head in his hands crying again. “Oh Kurt, I’m so sorry,” Blaine said quietly moving to stand close to the other boy. He hesitantly laid a hand on Kurt’s shoulder, relieved when he didn’t even flinch. Instead Kurt dropped one hand from his face and used it to cover Blaine’s hand.
“I’ll be right back, sweet heart,” Blaine said, rushing back into the main sectioned to get his phone and some tissues.
Back in the bedroom he sat down next to Kurt and offered him a tissue. Once Kurt had dried his eyes Blaine passed him the phone, already set to a blank text.
“Tell me what’s wrong,” he prompted. With shaky fingers Kurt tapped out a message.
I’m sorry, I’m really sorry.
“Hey, no, you have nothing to be sorry about,” Blaine said, giving in to the urge to wrap his boyfriend up in his arms. Kurt settled into the embrace and began typing again.
I messed up, I freaked and we were barely doing anything.
“It’s ok, I made you uncomfortable, I’m sorry.”
I just want to be perfect for you. I’m so messed up already and I can’t even make out without ending up a complete mess.
“Hey, it’s ok. Don’t you dare think you have to do something you’re uncomfortable with to please me and you are perfect for me.” Blaine pressed a kiss to Kurt’s temple. “Would you ever want me to do something I didn’t want to do?”
Of course not.
“Well then,” Blaine finished, his point made. He held Kurt tightly, burying his face in his already messed up hair.
“What freaked you out?” Blaine asked after a minute.
Just your hand being, so close to… you know.
“Ok, hands stay above the waist, ok?” Kurt nodded. “I’m not ready for much more than that either ok but when I am, I hope it’s you. So I’ll wait, if I have too, for you to be ready too,” Blaine said quietly, hooking his chin over Kurt’s shoulder. Kurt twisted to look at him. One hand cupped Blaine’s cheek and he kissed him sweetly. Then, with much surer fingers, he typed a message out on the phone, holding it for Blaine too see when he was done.
You’re the most important person in the world too me.
Blaine blinked back tears as he read that, unable to find words to reply he just wrapped Kurt up in his arms.
Comments
I absolutely loved this chapter. I had a feeling that Eddie knew Kurt so I was happy to learn the story between the two. Blaine and Kurt in this story is so awesome to see and I love that they understand each other and are able to express and accept exactly how they feel. I really enjoyed when Kurt let Blaine know the he was the most important person to him. Looking forward to seeing what happens next.
Thank you! (Look I'm replying the same day! That's like a new record for me) I did look back and see you mention you thought Eddie knew Kurt. Well done for spotting that, I wasn't sure how obvious it would be.
