Chapter Two: The First Date
Blaine shifted his weight from foot to foot as he stood outside the door to the Hummel household. He glanced down at his clothes hoping they were suitable, jeans and a dark red button up shirt, he’d rolled the sleeves up and left the top two buttons undone. He’d also not gelled his hair but he’d only really done that for school anyway. The door swung open to reveal a large main in a plaid shirt and a baseball cap. Blaine gulped; this wasn’t exactly how he’d envisaged Kurt’s father.
“You Blaine?” he asked gruffly.
“Yes sir,” Blaine replied, holding his hand out, playing every bit the well-mannered private school boy. Mr Hummel shook his hand.
“Come in, Kurt’ll be ready shortly.” Blaine stepped into the house. It was homely he noticed, nothing like the cold, austere building he called a home. It was neat but had a very definite lived in fill, the smell of whatever Kurt’s parents were eating tonight was wafting from the kitchen, it smelt divine.
“You must be Blaine.” Blaine looked at the woman who came out of the kitchen, a warm smile on her face. “Kurt was right, you are a handsome one.” Blaine smiled but was prevented from replying by Kurt’s appearance.
“Oh you look like you got ambushed, sorry, we’ll go now,” he said rushing down the hall and trying to pull Blaine out the door before anyone could say anything.
“No, stop,” Burt said and Kurt froze. “Turn around both of you,” they did. “Now Blaine, you’re driving yes?”
“Yes sir.”
“Ok, drive safely, no drinking or drugs, don’t speed, don’t even think about touching your phone while you’re behind the wheel.”
“Of course sir, I’ve a very careful driver.”
“Respect my son, if you hurt him I will hurt you ten times over.”
“I would never intentionally hurt someone, let alone Kurt,” Blaine replied with a gulp, to say Burt was scary was an understatement.
“No… inappropriate stuff.”
“Ok Dad, that’s enough we’re leaving,” Kurt cried, cutting his father off and successfully pulling the door open. He swiftly dragged Blaine out of the door.
Kurt laughed as they pulled up in the Breadstix car park a short drive later.
“What?” Blaine asked, glancing curiously at Kurt.
“Predictable,” Kurt replied, gesturing to the restaurant in front of them. Blaine’s face fell.
“Oh, I’ve never actually been here before, but I heard it’s good,” he explained sullenly.
“It is good,” Kurt hurried to comfort Blaine, “it’s the resident date place for Mckinley kids but we come here as a family too sometimes. I used to dream of a boy bringing me here on a date, literally,” the last word was spoken so quietly Blaine almost didn’t hear it.
“You’re just saying that to make me feel better aren’t you,” Blaine said.
“No I’m not, it’s really true, come on, let’s go. They do the best cheese cake here.” Kurt got out of the car ending the small conversation.
In the restaurant the conversation flowed easily, the talked about their experiences of glee club and school, they compared favourite movies, songs and shows. They shared a lot in common.
“How are your parents with you being, you know, gay,” Kurt asked suddenly. Blaine paused and frowned at him slightly.
“They don’t care, they love me, why do you ask? Your Dad seemed ok,” Blaine answered.
“Yes he is, he told me he already knew actually. It’s just I knew someone whose parents aren’t ok.”
“I thought you were the only out kid at your school?”
“Your memory is scary sometimes, yes, it’s complicated.”
“Complicated?” Blaine prompted.
“Yes, remember that dream I said I had while I was in hospital?” Kurt paused for Blaine to nod, “well they were part of that, they’re not real, sort of.”
“You want to talk about it?”
“No, the real world’s pretty great right now, I want to stay here.” There was a pause after that as the two stared at each other. Finally Blaine grinned.
“Tell me something no one else knows about you, or at least not many.”
Kurt thought for a moment about his answer. “I don’t really like the taste of turkey but it’s my Dad’s favourite part of the Thanksgiving meal so I never had the heart to tell him.”
“That’s actually really sweet,” Blaine said with a soft smile. Kurt smile bashfully back at him, before a sly smirk appeared on his face.
“Your turn,” he said.
“Ok, so no one outside my family knows this; my Dad isn’t my biological father, that guy dumped my Mum when she said she was pregnant. When I was five my Mum married and Paul, her husband, adopted me. He’s the only Dad I ever known so as far as I’m concerned he is.” Blaine said it all so matter of fact that Kurt didn’t know what to say, fortunately Blaine saved him.
“Since we’re already on the subject of family, I have two half-sisters Ellie, who’s eleven and Holly, who’s eight. They are one part adorable, two parts insufferable. So that’s my family, tell me about yours.”
“Well you met my Dad and Step- Mom, Carol. There’s also her son Finn, he’s my age, star-quarterback and pretty much lead male vocalist in Glee. He’s now on a football scholarship at Ohio State.”
“Is he the tall one that did all those duets with the short brunette girl in competitions?”
“Yes that’d be him.”
“So where’s your Mum,” Blaine asked carefully.
“She died when I was eight and don’t say you’re sorry or whatever. I’m not over it, I doubt I ever will be but I deal with it.” Blaine nodded slowly then swiftly turned the conversation onto his favourite band, declaring Kurt had to check them out.

“Call me if you need anything ok?” Blaine asked earnestly, looking into Kurt’s eyes. The pair stood in the parking lot of Dalton, beside Kurt’s car. Kurt looked down, away from Blaine, biting his lip. “This sounds cheesy as hell but you’re not alone Kurt. I’ve got your back,” Blaine said. Kurt looked back up at him and nodded, a small smile spreading across his features.
“No one’s ever said that to me before,” he said quietly. Blaine gently cupped Kurt’s cheek, brushing his thumb over the soft skin.
“You can always count on me,” Blaine reassured. “Be safe.”
With another weak smile Kurt got in his car and drove away.

Blaine parked his car on the kerb outside Kurt’s house and walked him to the door.
“Tonight was the most fun I’ve had since I woke up, thank you,” Kurt said softly.
“I’m glad you had a good time. I want to do this again,” Blaine replied, stepping close to Kurt and winding his arms around his waist. Kurt’s hands came to rest on his chest.
“Me too,” he whispered back moving his head forward just a little.
“I’m leaving for college at the end of summer,” Blaine said, before their lips could connect. Kurt frowned at the sudden change in mood and tried to step back but Blaine kept his arms tight around Kurt’s waist.
“What?” he asked.
“I need you to know, this can only be a summer thing,” Blaine explained. Kurt bit his lip lightly, considering his options before slowly nodding.
“Ok, summer thing, actually sounds quite nice right now.”
“Great, can I kiss you now?” Blaine asked. Kurt nodded again and then there lips connected. Kurt’s lips were soft and hesitant at first, he gained more confidence slowly. Blaine kept the kiss sweet and gentle, before breaking apart.
“So, my turn to take you out next then?” Kurt asked, a little breathlessly.
“Yep, but I think you should probably head inside before you’re Dad decides to make sure I’m not doing anything inappropriate,” Blaine replied. Kurt groaned and Blaine couldn’t help but steal one last kiss before they parted.
