The afternoon passed by, Carole and Burt talking in the kitchen as they prepared dinner together, Carole teaching him how to cook, and Burt sneaking samples of the meal. Finn and Sam enjoying the beautiful spring weather as they donned their light jackets and went outback to play a casual game of football that was more so catch than anything fancy. Rachel sitting on the back porch sipping iced tea as she watched the boyish game. Santana reclining against Kurt's side as they sat together on the front patio stairs, Kurt lazily rubbing small circles on his bump, Santana talking animatedly about her love of Brittany and ways to win her back.
It was peaceful here; it was warm and nice, and just slow. Everything just felt so relaxed. Kurt could listen to the sounds of insects rustling in the grass, of the wind as it blew through neighboring wind chimes, he could hear everything. Which is why it was weird for him to hear tires crushing gravel in the driveway as a familiar car drove up and parked.
"Hey Kurt." Blaine said timidly walking up the four wooden stairs and having a seat next to where he and Santana where resting. "Hi Santana." He said gently.
"Hey Blaine, I thought you weren't going to come to family dinner." Kurt sighed and stilled his hand on his abdomen.
"That was before I heard everything you had to say on that stage. I really miss you Kurt. I miss you being my friend. I figured I could come and we could talk." Blaine said softly and Kurt smiled.
"I'm so happy you came." Kurt replied and he took Blaine's hand in his. "It means a lot that you came." He smiled, and Santana gave him a knowing look, excusing herself to go join Rachel around back leaving the two alone to talk.
"How are you Blaine?" Kurt asked, Blaine scooting closer to him now that the space Santana had occupied was free.
"I'm doing well." Blaine replied and Kurt smiled.
"I'm really happy you are." Kurt said genuinely. "How's school?" Kurt asked.
"You sound like my mom." Blaine laughed.
"Well I care about you." Kurt laughed. "I feel like we haven't talked and you said you wanted to be friends. Well we used to tell each other everything. Ever since we broke up you stopped talking to me, I kept trying to reach out, but you were so sad and I was so sad and it was all just so sad. And then Christmas was magical, seeing you was awesome. And I though well we can be close again, but then we didn't talk. And then Valentine's day came around and seeing you was amazing. We hooked up in your car and I thought this is it, we're gonna talk things out and get back together, but I couldn't do that without talking things through. You were telling me about Sam, about your feelings towards him, and I thought I shouldn't push the getting back together, but before I knew it you had a hotel room key and I was yours. I'll always be yours. And after that I thought he's gonna wanna talk things out, but you never did. And then I came back here and you were mad with me and I have no idea what happened. And that's when I realized if we're ever going to go back to being friends we need to talk out everything. So that's why I'm interested, I wanna know everything that's going on in your life." Kurt explained and Blaine sighed.
"I thought I could push you away. Tina had convinced me you were bad news and I thought I was better off without you. I found Sam, I moved on. I was doing well, and when you came back I was like what the fuck? I was scared and sad and angry and nervous. I was confused with my feelings but I think I figured it all out." Blaine said and Kurt smiled.
"Sounds like a lot's been going on in that pretty little head of yours. Penny for your thoughts?" Kurt asked and Blaine wrapped his arms around Kurt's waist.
"Oh Kurt, you're my best friend and I need you. I was stupid to even think I push someone like you out of my life. I need you. I love you." Blaine started.
"And I love you too." Kurt smiled.
"Which is why we can't get back together." Blaine said and Kurt's heart sank. "My love for you has changed, yes I'll always still care for you, but I don't want to get back together with you. I need a real man in my life, I need Sam. I love Sam. My heart speeds up when I see him and I just know he's the one. That's another reason I pushed you away. I thought you were just trying to hook up with me, and I know if I ever want to have a chance with Sam I have to separate myself from you. I hope you understand." Blaine smiled.
"Blaine, trust me when I say the only thing I want in life is for you to be happy. Whoever that's with, be it me or Sam or anyone else, I just want you to be happy. Who knows maybe in about six months or something, say December 14th for example, maybe you'll find a tiny reason to come see me. Maybe not, maybe you won't want to. It doesn't matter. Just promise me we'll stay close." Kurt replied and Blaine hugged him tightly.
"Kurt you'll always be my best friend, and I love you." Blaine smiled.
"You'll always have a special connection to my life Blaine. I love you too." Kurt said giving him a watery smile and a soft kiss on the lips, a goodbye. For now at least.
"Come on, let's go see if dinner's ready." Kurt smiled and led Blaine inside hand in hand. Their contact only breaking when Blaine saw Sam.
"Blaine, kiddo! It's great to see you here! Congratulations man." Burt said pulling Blaine in for a hug and kissing his cheek as he welcomed him into his home.
"Thanks? But for what?" Blaine asked confused.
Kurt exchanged a sad look with Burt and Burt frowned.
"Congratulations on getting your braces off?" Burt said quickly and laughed awkwardly.
"I actually haven't ever had braces." Blaine looked at him confused.
"Well congrats because your teeth are really straight." Burt smiled walking back towards the kitchen awkwardly.
"Well that wasn't strange." Blaine laughed.
"I think he's just happy to see you." Kurt assured him and shook his head at the situation.
"Hey Blaine what's up?" Finn asked taking the football from Sam and tossing it into the hall closest.
"Not much just stopped in for family dinner." Blaine smiled brightly at Sam.
"Welcome to the family, I'm so happy for the two of you, and I'm gonna be an uncle, can you believe it?!" Finn said excitedly picking Blaine up off the floor to hug him.
"You're going to be an uncle? That's so cool. Who's having a baby?" Blaine asked and Finn nearly dropped him.
"Mouse Kurt, he was actually a she and a very pregnant she." Kurt explained as Finn frowned absolutely confused.
"But there weren't really any mice?" Blaine asked confused.
"Shhh the mice don't know that." Kurt laughed awkwardly and Blaine shrugged.
"Anyway, who want's food. Mmm smells delicious mom." Kurt smiled as he walked into the kitchen giving Carole a kiss on the cheek.
"Tell the boys to wash up and let Rachel and Santana know we're eating." She smiled.
"Blaine, will you go relay that message to Finn and Sam while I get the girls?" Kurt asked and Blaine nodded.
"Guys dinners ready." Kurt called out to them, stopping them when they walked in. "Blaine's here, he doesn't know I'm pregnant, he's in love with Sam, and definitely doesn't want to get back together with me, please be on your best behavior. I'm going to try and talk to him after dinner." Kurt harshly whispered as they stood in the entrance. Rachel and Santana nodded silently following him inside.
"Dinner looks amazing Mrs. Carole." Santana said helping herself to a piece of grilled salmon and a spoonful of salad.
"Kurt, um don't eat fish. I was too excited when I heard the news and went to the market, it was expensive and you can't really return food. Just have plenty of the vegetables and some salad." Carole warned him and Kurt suddenly remembered reading something about Mercury poisoning in fish and what not to eat when pregnant.
"Thanks for the heads up, I totally would have forgotten." Kurt laughed.
"What can't you have any of the salmon? It's looks really good." Blaine asked.
"Special diet." Rachel replied for him fixing a vegan plate for herself.
"I did notice you put on some weight, but I wasn't going to say anything." Blaine laughed and Kurt frowned.
"Yeah." Kurt shrugged and Santana laughed to herself.
After an extremely awkward dinner Rachel and Santana began cleaning up, putting left overs away, and washing the dishes. Carole and Burt retreating to the living room to watch television.
"Do you guys wanna go play Call of Duty in Finn's room?" Sam asked and Blaine nodded eagerly.
"I'd love to." He smiled and Sam and Finn started up the stairs.
"Actually Blaine, I had something to tell you, do you think you could come with me to my room? It won't take that long. It's just really important, and if I don't tell you now it'll be awful if you hear it from someone else and I don't want you to be mad with me because I really want to be your friend." Kurt said stopping everyone as the stood in the upstairs hallway.
"Kurt, Sam invited me to his room. You're kind of being a cockblock. I'm sure you can text me later." Blaine said clearly angered that Kurt was standing in his way of going with Sam.
"Blaine it's really important." Kurt sighed.
"I doubt it's that important Kurt, now move." Blaine demanded shoving Kurt out of the way and into the wall, Kurt protectively covering his belly.
"Don't you dare hurt my future niece!" Finn yelled pushing Blaine against the wall, knocking over a picture and holding Blaine there by the collar of his shirt. "What the fuck is wrong with you?" He asked, Rachel and Santana rushing towards the commotion to see what was happening.
"Kurt, are you okay?" Santana asked grabbing him. "Is the baby okay? What did you hit?" She asked.
"I just bumped my shoulder, the baby should be fine." Kurt answered her moving towards where Finn had Blaine cornered.
"Finn let him go, he didn't mean it. I'm okay. Your niece or nephew is okay. Everything's okay." Kurt assured him and Finn calmed down.
"Blaine will you please listen to me?" Kurt asked and Blaine threw his hands up in anger.
"Kurt, I honestly don't give a fuck what you have to say. I thought we could be friends but you're so god damn annoying. I thought you wanted me to be happy? Right now you preventing me from hanging out with Sam is not making me happy." Blaine said and Kurt felt the tears building up behind his eyes.
"I'm sorry Blaine. I do want you to be happy. Have fun. Just let me know whenever you're free to listen." Kurt sighed and Blaine smiled.
"Thank you Kurt. See that wasn't so hard." Blaine smiled about to walk into Finn's room, Sam putting a hand on his chest and stopping him.
"Blaine, you need to go listen to what Kurt has to say. You need to open your eyes and focus on what's in front of you. I will never have feelings for you the way you feel for me. I'm not gay. We will never work out. But you know who will work out? You and Kurt. So go listen to him and make things work." Sam warned him and Blaine looked confused.
"Thanks Sammy." Kurt said softly and Blaine frowned.
"I'm sorry Sam, I just really really like you and I thought maybe you liked me too." Blaine sighed.
"Not as anything more than a friend." Sam laughed. "Now listen to what Kurt has to say." He warned.
"Okay, Kurt. What is it?" Blaine asked still incredibly irritated.
"You're going to be a father, Blaine." Kurt cried. "I'm pregnant, with your child." Kurt spoke softly, looking down as the tears fell from his eyes, his hand instinctively finding his baby bump. "I came back to Lima to tell you I was pregnant, and I'm keeping my baby." He cried and Santana wrapped her arm around him steadying him as he spoke. "I'm so sorry." He cried.
