After an hour or so of visiting him Burt, Carole, and Finn walked back downstairs to meet up with Blaine.
“Hey guys.” Blaine said sadly. “How’s he doing?” He asked.
“He looked gross.” Finn said as Carole smacked the back of his head.
“He was pretty messed up, but he is alive and recovering and that is all that matters.” Carole said relieved her step-son would be okay.
“Yeah, that’s good.” Blaine said cheering up a little at the knowledge he would be okay.
“Hey Blaine.” Burt said.
“Yes Mr. Hummel?” Blaine questioned.
“I’m sorry you weren’t allowed in. I know Kurt means a lot to you. And you certainly mean a lot to him. I think it’s important for you to be there, you are like family. I’ll talk to the staff. See if we can pull some strings.” Burt answered.
“Thank you so much Mr. Hummel.”
“Call me Burt.” He chuckled.
“Thanks Burt. I just want to be there for him, you know. I love him so much. I wish I could have visited him with you guys. Held his hand, told him he’d be okay.” Blaine added.
“I know you do, and he loves you too. Like I said we’ll talk to the doctors.” Burt reassured him.
“Or we could just sneak him in.” Finn added, clearly proud of his idea.
“If only I looked like you.” Blaine joked as he stood on his tiptoes and gazed up to Finn’s face.
“Just tell them you’re like Kurt’s husband or something. You guys always talk about marriage and stuff.” Finn said.
“Awwwhhhh!!! You guys talk about marriage!” Carole asked pretending to wipe a tear from her eye.
“Haha yeah. Kurt means the world to me. I would love to marry him. You know after all of this is over.” Blaine said gesturing to the hospital.
“awwh!” Carole cooed again and Burt smiled fondly.
“Come on, let’s go to dinner. My treat.” Burt said gesturing to the main entrance of the hospital.
The all walked across the parking lot and hoped in their respective cars to meet up at Breadstix.
Once inside the restaurant they were seated and began to talk as the waitress took their drink orders.
The waitress left to get their drinks and Finn had already finished the bowl of breadsticks left on the table.
“What I’m hungry.” Finn justified himself as they all stared. Half a breadstick sticking out of his mouth.
“Since Kurt’s not here, I’m gonna say it. ‘Finn Hudson, do not talk with your mouth full’.” Blaine teased in a very bad impression of Kurt tone.
“Awwh I miss him.” Finn said looking down still chewing his bread. “Way to be a downer, Blaine.” Finn added as bread fell out of his mouth when he talked.
“Way to be gross, Finn.” Blaine retorted.
“I’m with Blaine. Use your manners, sweetie.” Carole said softly.
Burt chuckled and handed Finn a napkin.
“You treat me like a five year old.” Finn said as Blaine wiped up the mess Finn had made.
“Well you act like one.” Blaine joked.
“True.” Finn laughed.
The waitress came back and handed out the drinks.
“Here are your drinks, you guys.” She stopped in front of Blaine, “Oh I remember you gorgeous, you’re always here with your beautiful boyfriend!” She smiled. “Where is he tonight?” She asked kindly.
“Oh he’s going through some personal things right now, he couldn’t make it.” Blaine said quietly.
“Oh, did you guys break up?” She asked. “Sorry that was a little forward. I just meant you’re such a cute couple and you’re always here together.” She explained.
“Oh, no, we’re still together.” He answered.
“He’s in the hospital.” Finn clarified and received shocked expressions from his family.
Blaine elbowed him.
“Oh. Sorry.” She said. “So are you guys ready to order?” She asked awkwardly changing the subject.
They gave her their orders and she walked away.
“That was nice. It’s always nice to see people who aren’t so judgmental and homophobic. Typically when Kurt and I come here on dates we’re given dirty looks and it gets pretty uncomfortable, but she’s always nice.” Blaine said.
“She seemed nice.” Carole agreed. “Finn.” Carole said a little more sternly.
“Mhmm?” He asked.
“What Kurt’s going through is personal; you don’t need to share that with everyone.” Carole said giving Finn a death stare.
Finn mumbled an apology and they continued talking.
“So Blaine, how’s Dalton?” Burt asked changing the subject.
“It’s good, thank you for asking. Sometimes the work is a bit much, as I’m sure you’re aware from when Kurt was there. But it’s still good.” Blaine said.
He wanted to say, ‘It’s awful because Kurt’s gone and I’m all alone and away from the person I love.’ But he knew they couldn’t afford to send Kurt there and he would never express those opinions to Kurt yet alone his family.
“And how are you doing at McKinley, Finn?” Blaine asked politely.
“Ehh, I’m passing.” Finn said.
“Well that’s good. How’s the shop Mr. Hummel?” Blaine asked.
“I told you, you can call me Burt. And business is going pretty well if I do say so.” Burt answered.
“That’s great.” Blaine turned to Carole. “And you, how is work?” He asked.
“It’s going well.” She said sweetly.
Anyone else would have seen Blaine as a kiss up, but he genuinely did care about how these people’s lives were. They were like a family to him and he wanted to make sure they were happy and doing well.
Plus earning a little brownie points from the boyfriend’s family could never hurt.
There food came and they ate while holding small talk.
The check came and Burt paid and they stood up to leave.
“Thank you so much for dinner Mr. Hummel-I mean Burt.” Blaine said correcting himself.
Burt chuckled at this, “No problem kiddo.”
“I guess I’m going to drive back to Westerville now. I still have homework to do for class tomorrow, but right after school I’ll meet you all back at the hospital.” Blaine said.
“Sounds like a plan.” Burt replied.
They said their goodbyes and went their separate ways.
