Hours past and finally the same nurse came down to tell them they could see Kurt.
They followed her to a different hospital room, on one of the upper floors.
She explained that this floor was for patients whose chance of survival was close to zero.
Well that just made things sad.
They understood that she didn’t want to get their hopes up, but did she have to sound so negative?
In reality things were negative.
So guess so.
“Okay, he’s in here. He’s still unresponsive, and it’s quite likely he never will be. But you can visit with him for a few hours.” She said sadly.
“Okay. Thank you.” Burt replied.
They all gathered around Kurt’s bedside.
Each one grabbing on to some part of him, holding him, and crying.
He didn’t look nearly as bad as he did the first time they were allowed to visit; in fact he looked at peace.
And quite frankly that was disturbing.
Blaine kissed his cheek repeatedly; he took his hand in his, stroked his hair, and whispered sweet nothings into his ear.
What was he going to do without him?
He kept telling himself to not give up.
But it was hard.
Blaine placed his hand on Kurt’s cheek and Kurt shivered at the touch.
He shivered at the touch.
He was still alive.
He had been unresponsive for almost a day, but now…he had just responded to Blaine’s touch.
Blaine shook it off; he probably just imagined the small movement. It was an impossibility. He just missed him and hasn’t slept, he was probably just delusional.
But it wasn’t just his imagination. He stirred again and machines began beeping.
What was going on?
Doctors rushed in and cheeked the machines and his pulse and ran tests.
“What’s happening?” Finn asked one of the doctors.
“He’s responsive-” the doctor explained.
“He’s alive?” Blaine cut in. “He’s gonna be okay?” he asked now teary-eyed.
“Well, there is extreme internal damage, and his heart is just barely beating, but beyond all odds it seems as if he is waking up. We’re not sure if him waking up is good or not, because a majority of his organs have either failed or shut down.” The doctor explained.
“Can’t you like do like surgery or something?” Finn asked.
“Well we could always do a transplant of some sorts for organs that have completely failed, and I guess if he does recover from that the others may begin to recover.” She guessed.
“Okay, let’s do it. Do you have any donors or anything?” Burt asked.
“Well we’d only need a piece of a liver because the liver is capable of ‘growing back’. We’d need a donor. Maybe if any of you are willing?” She explained.
“Okay, wwhat about the other organs?” Burt followed up.
“Well a person can survive with just one kidney, so he should be fine.” She answered.
“He can have a piece of my liver.” Blaine said hopefully.
“If you’re a match that would be perfect.” The doctor said taking Blaine into a prep room to see if he could be a match.
“You’re gonna be okay.” Blaine said kissing Kurt before leaving the room.
“Well, we are in luck. You are a match. If your still okay with it we can bring Kurt in and begin prepping for surgery. Are you still okay with that?” The nurse asked.
Blaine laughed, how could she even ask that, of course he was okay. “I’d do anything to save him. I love him. Of course I’m still okay with it.” He replied.
“Okay then, we’ll bring him in and get some surgeons. Here please lie back on the table so we can begin preparations.” She explained gesturing for him to lie back down.
“Okay.”
A few minutes later the room crowded with doctors and nurse and surgeons. Kurt was wheeled in and nurses began making preparations.
The cleaned both of them and drew outlines on their bodies with marker.
“We’re going to need to put you under for the duration of the transplant.” One of the doctors explained as he placed a mask over Blaine’s mouth.
“You both should be out of surgery in a few hours and you’ll probably wake up later this evening. Okay. Ready? Breathe in and count backwards for me.” The doctor said.
“Ten…nine…eight…seven…six…” His vision began fuzzy and he slipped into a deep deep sleep.
Outside the operating room Burt, Carole, and Finn sat waiting.
“Do you think they’ll be okay?” Finn asked.
“It’s just a simple surgery, Finn. Blaine will be fine. And Kurt, eventually he’ll be fine too.” Carole comforted him.
“After he’s physically recovered, we’re having that damn intervention and he’s getting help.” Burt said.
“You got that right. No more hospital scares.” Carole said stifling a yawn.
“If you want you guys can go home and rest, I’ll call you when they’re out of surgery.” He offered.
“I wouldn’t want to leave you here.” Carole replied.
“It’s fine, go ahead love. You need some rest.” Burt said sweetly.
“Okay, we’ll be back. Call when they’re out of surgery, or if anything goes wrong.” Carole replied as her and Finn said goodbye to Burt.
“Bye sweetie, bye kiddo.” Burt waved.
Carole and Finn exited the hospital and walked to her car.
“Hey mom?” Finn asked.
“Yeah?”
“Do you think anything will go wrong?” he asked worried.
“I-I don’t know. I hope not. But right now I just don’t know.” She replied.
Their drive home was silent until they past McKinley.
“What do you thinks going on there?” Carole asked gesturing to all the commotion going on.
“Shit, I have a game tonight.” Finn answered.
“Is your gear there? Do you want me to drop you off? You could just get a ride home afterwards and we’ll come get you in the morning to go back to the hospital.” She offered.
“Thanks, but I don’t feel like I should leave Kurt and Blaine.” Finn replied.
“Finn, they’ll be fine. You need a break; you’ve been in the hospital with us all along, why don’t you just go. You need this.” She replied.
“Okay, thanks.” Finn said as she entered the parking lot and dropped him off.
Finn made his way to the locker room and was immediately greeted by his friends.
He did need this.
“Finn, we didn’t think you’d make it. How’s Kurt?” Puck asked hugging Finn tightly.
“He’s not good.” Finn said simply.
“I’m sorry to hear that.” Mike said now joining in on the hug.
“I thought he woke up what happened?” Same asked joining the group hug.
“He, um, had some setbacks.” Finn said awkwardly.
“What do you mean?” Puck asked concerned.
“He tried to kill himself again. He overdosed on his meds and his organs and stuff shut down. They told us he was going to die, but he woke up sort of. And now he needs an organ transplant, and him and Blaine are in surgery.” He explained starting to tear up.
“Why’s Blaine in surgery?” Puck questioned.
“He offered to be a donor.” Finn answered.
“Now, that is devotion.” Mike stated.
“Yeah, I know.” Finn said.
“How’s Blaine doing?” Sam asked.
“Like us he’s a mess. But he’s a little worse. He just loves Kurt so much. It’s hard for all of us, but I kind of feel sorry for Blaine though.” Finn explained.
“That sucks.” Puck replied.
“Yeah.” Finn said sadly.
“Are you okay?” Mike asked.
“Yeah, I’m dealing. Kurt and I probably didn’t seem that close, but he’s still my stepbrother and I love him, you know?” Finn said.
“Yeah I know what you mean.” Sam replied.
“Ugh Karofsky’s gonna pay for this.” Puck said angrily punching the wall.
“Oh yeah? And what are you gonna do about it?” Karofsky asked stepping out from behind a row of lockers.
