Kurt walked into glee club rehearsal and sat down in his usual seat. Some of the members who were closer to him hugged him and talked to him while others whispered about him as if he wasn’t there.
“Alrighty then, Finn didn’t you have something planned for us today?” Mr. Schue addressed the group as he walked in.
“Sure do.” Finn said as he stood up.
“All right the floor is all yours.” Mr. Schuester said as he clapped his hands together once.
“So.” Finn started awkwardly. “We thought it would be a good idea if we took this practice time and devoted it to Kurt, to sing him some inspirational songs and stuff. You know tell him it’s gonna be okay. Stuff like that.” Finn finished.
“Finn, you didn’t have to.” Kurt said shyly.
“We wanted to Kurt.” Mercedes chimed in from next to him.
“So were gonna sing some songs now okay? Okay.” Finn said.
“Can we go first?” Puck asked.
“Sure.” Mr. Schue replied shaking his head.
“Okay dude. You’re mah boy and we all care about you. We know things been tough but we got your back.” Puck explained as he grabbed his guitar and Sam joined him and Finn in the front f the room.
“Finn wanted to do the clichéd ‘How To Save A Life’ thing but we said no.” Sam said laughing a little.
“This is something a little more us, and we just want you to know it’s never too late.” Puck said before starting to strum his guitar.
Puck played his guitar as Sam stepped forward first to sing
“This world will never be what I expected and if I don’t belong who would have guessed it?”
Finn started up on the drums as Sam continued to sing.
“I will not leave alone everything that I own. To make you feel like it’s not too late it’s never too late.”
Now all boys began to sing.
“Even if I say: ‘it will be all right,’ still I hear you say you want to end your life… now again we try to just stay alive. Maybe we’ll turn it around, ‘cause it’s not too late! It’s never too late!”
Sam stepped forward and began to sing by himself once again
“No one will ever see this side reflected and if there’s something wrong who would have guessed it? And I have left alone everything that I own to make you feel like it’s not too late it’s never too late.”
Puck and Finn joined back in again as they sang the next part
“Even if I say: ‘it will be all right,’ still I hear you say you want to end your life… now again we try to just stay alive. Maybe we’ll turn it around, ‘cause it’s not too late! It’s never too late!”
The boys ended there song and everyone clapped.
A teary eyed Kurt stood up and clapped and thanked them. The three football players pulled him into a group hug and patted him on the back.
“Thanks guys.” Kurt said again before everyone returned to sitting.
“That was great guys.” Mr. Schue said clapping. “Anyone else?”
“I wanted to go.” Artie said, “Mike and I were working on a piece.”
“Go ahead.” Mr. Schue nodded.
“Okay so this song is about a girl. But we changed it.” Mike explained as the music started.
Artie began to sing as Mike artistically moved around him.
“He’s upset. Bad day. Heads for the dresser drawer to drive his pain away.”
Mike started to sing from behind him.
“Nothing good can come of this. He opens it there’s nothing there. It’s only left over tears. Mom and dad had no right he screams. As the anger runs down both of his cheeks”
Artie took back over.
“Then as he closed his eyes, he found relied in a knife. The blood flows as he cries.”
Mike began to sing again taking Arties place.
“All alone the way he feels left alone to deal with all the pain-drenched sorrow relief. Bite the lip just forget the bleeding.”
Mike’s voice trailed off as Artie took over once again.
“Then he closed his eyes, he found relied in a knife. The blood flows as he cries. Woah oh-oh Then as he closed his eyes, he found relief in a knife. The blood flows as she cries.”
The two continued to dramatically sing until the song came to a close.
This song hit really close to home for Kurt, it was after all the way he felt.
“We know that this song isn’t as positive as others but we felt the sadness of the story would relate to you somehow and you could learn from it you know.” Mike said after the music had completely finished
“Thank you both so much.” Kurt said as they hugged him.
“Mr. Schue. Can I go next?” Rachel asked already standing up from her seat.”
“Sure thing Rachel.”
“Okay, so I know the idea was for songs about helping others in a low place but when I googled songs about self harm I came across this and I know it’s from the point of view of the one inflicting the pain I thought it fit.” Rachel said as she stood in front of the room.
Of course Rachel would somehow find away to make it about herself.
She walked over to Brad sitting at the piano and told him which song.
The music started and Rachel began to sing.
“How can you see into my eyes like open doors? Leading you down into my core, where I’ve become so numb. Without a soul my spirits sleeping somewhere cold. Until you find it there and lead it back home. (Wake me Up) Wake me up inside (I Can’t Wake Up) Wake me up inside (Save me) Call my name and save me from the dark (wake me up) Bid my blood to run (I can’t wake up) Before I come undone (save me) Save me from the nothing I’ve become.”
Rachel continued her song flawlessly her voice almost trembling as she reached the end of the song. A tear rolling down her cheek from the emotions she packed behind the lyrics.
“I hope you wake up Kurt.” She said as she stopped in front of him and hugged him.
“Thank you Rach that was beautiful.”
“I love you Kurt, I really hope you can get better.”
“I hope so too.” He mumbled as she made her way back to her seat.
“well done Rachel.” Mr. Schue applauded before asking if anyone else would like to sing.
“Can I go Mr. Schue?” Quinn spoke up.
“Sure go ahead Quinn.”
“So the reason I’m singing this sing is because even though people might just try to tear you down, they can’t. You are better than them. Always will be. And you shouldn’t let them hurt them or yourself for that matter. You’re stronger. You’ll always rise above. Like a skyscraper.” She chuckled at the last part but the sadness in her eyes meant she was serious about what she said.
“Santana, Brittany, come back me up?” She asked as they got out of their seats to come join her in the front of the room.
The music began and Quinn sang.
“Skies are crying. I am watching. Catching teardrops in my hands. Only silence as it’s ending. Like we never had a chance. Do you have to make me feel like there’s nothing left of me?”
Santana and Brittany joined in and there three voices blended together in a breathtakingly beautiful harmony.
“You can take everything I have; You can break everything I am, Like I’m made of glass, Like I’m made of paper. Go on and try to tear me down. I will be rising from the ground Like a skyscraper.”
“Like a skyscraper” the echoed.
The song went on and the girls took turns singing lines and coming together. All in all it was beautiful. It brought a tear to his eye and Santana pulled him out of his seat and brought him to the front of the room.
The song around him and held him as the song drew to a close.
“Thank you so much. Guys it was truly beautiful. I needed that. Thank you. I love you guys.” Kurt said shaking a little from his held back sobs.
“We know. And we love you too.” Quinn said and each one of them kissed his cheek as they returned to their seats.
Everyone’s eyes were misty and some people were full on crying.
“Let’s take a minute to regroup and then we’ll come back.” Mr. Schue said wiping away one of his own tears.
The group nodded and everyone cried and took turns hugging Kurt.
Kurt felt good to be supported like this.
To have people who would care.
