It was not just another building with plain walls and a ‘happy and friendly’ environment, this place was different. His dad had been persistent and stuck to his word, as soon as he left Kurt in his room; he rushed online to search for someone to help Kurt. The truth was that Burt was terrified of Kurt hurting himself, he knew that being the only out kid in school was hard but he couldn’t understand the true depths of it, he needed to find someone to who did. That’s how Kurt ended up in this small yet thoughtfully decorated office with a strange man, who was currently just staring at him.
‘So Mr Hummel’ the man spoke.
‘Erm yes?’ Kurt replied wishing his father had not left him here alone, as he was becoming very anxious of the clearly insane man in front of him. But he couldn’t just leave, he promised, he promised to his dad.
‘Have you ever seen Star Wars?’ the man questioned, unconsciously adding to Kurt fear that the man in front of him was clearly an escapee from a local mental unit.
‘No, I can’t, can’t really say I have’ Kurt answered being sure to not add any hints of violence or anger to his answer as he was sure this man was mentally deranged and would most likely pounce at any moment. The strange man wriggled in his chair for a moment, until he found a comfortable position and sighed.
‘Ahh, you really should, its super cool, there are explosions and light sabers, like genuine beams of light that can cut stuff up’ the man chuckled to himself at Kurt’s blatant confusion. ‘I’m Doctor Who’ He extended his hand to Kurt and Kurt shook it with a feeble grin, which quickly changed to one of shock.
‘Doctor who?’ Kurt questioned.
‘Doctor Smith, call me Eric though.’ The doctor grinned in response. ‘I like you, Mr Hummel, I think this will work, this will work just fine’
‘Am I being punk’d, because I am very confused with this situation right now Doctor.’ Kurt couldn’t control his inner emotions.
‘Okay, well you see Kurt, I’m not a very functional Doctor, I like to do things differently. I have my own story, you see. So I know being shipped off to a psychologist sucks like losing out on a real vintage Vivienne Westwood jacket on ebay, so when said suckish psychologist asks you the same mundane questions, it just gets worse.’ Eric’s whole persona had changed in a instant, like he was recalling his memories rather than speaking in general.
‘Erm Doctor?’
‘Eric.’
‘Eric, could you, I mean if you, I mean could you tell me your story?’
‘Yeah sure, I grew up here in Westerville and I came out when I was 12, I got beaten and it was shit, I had no one but my parents, but I didn’t tell them what was going on, they didn’t know I was gay, some kids from my school saw me and this boy I knew from camp out, Howard, on a date and holding hands, and soon the whole school knew. I pretended I was fine and it didn’t bother me, but it did I bottled it up and then I broke. I tried to kill myself Kurt, and now looking back at it, I don’t know how I could have felt like that, my parents found me and I survived, I had to tell them eventually and when I did they, they didn’t care, they loved me and turns out all it took was a student trying to kill themselves for the school to bother to introduce anti bullying rules, of course the abuse quickly reduced afterwards but I could feel it around me, as soon as I got out of there I went to college and got my degree to make sure no one else had to suffer like me, the guys I was forced to talk to didn’t help, they worsen my mood to be honest, but I got through it, people started to befriend me and Howard, well Howard is my husband now, sometimes I think it was worth it, but it really wasn’t, it wasn’t right.’ Eric blinked back to reality to see Kurt balled up and weeping into his hands.
‘I need help Eric, please help me’
‘Of course I will Kurt, of course I will’
Eric reached out to place a comforting hand onto Kurt, but was quickly dragged into a bone crushing hug by the young boy. Kurt slowly let go of the comfort of Eric and his story that sounded to similar to his own to be true.
‘So Kurt, will you come back and see me?’
‘Of course, next time can I, can I tell you my story?’
‘Kurt, you can tell me as little or as much as you need’
The mood was contrasting from the start and the sun was shining through the windows. Eric’s voice broke the moment.
‘Oh Kurt before you go, you need to go to reception and get the new address of my office’
‘Oh are you moving?’
‘Yeah just across town, you can go down now and get it, I’ll see you next time Kurt, in the mean time I want you to think about what you want to tell me next time, but only once, don’t dwell on it, okay’
‘Yeah sure, bye’
Kurt got the new address and walked to meet his dad outside, feeling slightly elated and lifted as the sun shone on his face.
The next Saturday came quickly and Burt dropped Kurt off at Eric’s new office, the building was old and boggled Kurt’s mind for a while as it seemed to be an apartment block rather than a place of business. Kurt’s mood had changed over the week, the weather produced a week-long storm and seemed to want to represent his mood. Kurt pressed the buzzer of the intercom at the gate, but it didn’t seem to be working. Just great, he thought to himself and he felt the first drops of rain which were followed by several thousand more. Even better, he thought as he dropped his bag to the floor to retrieve an umbrella. The rain pounded his face and blurred his vision. The front door of the building opened and the gate swung open. ‘Come on, follow me’ shouted a male voice. Kurt was in no position to deny his demands. A hand suddenly gathered his belongings in one arm and the other slung around Kurt’s waist. The warmth that filled his body at the slight body contact was normal, right? Kurt’s internal temperature increased further by the warmth of the lobby. He shucked his coat off and looked at the man that had brought him in. The man, if you could even call someone with such beautiful chiselled features and smoulderingly dark eyes that caught the light and shone in such a complex and beautiful way Kurt was sure he could never explain the experience to anyone, a person with the embodiment of such perfection could not be called a man, man is flawed and imperfect, whereas this ineffable being in front of him was the complete opposite. Kurt’s thoughts were disrupted by the sound of sexy angels tickling his eardrums.
‘Pretty cray cray out there, oh my god, I meant crazy, I really did it’s just my brother says words and sometimes I just zone out and allow them to penetrate my mind and I.. should stop talking. Erm I’m Blaine, by the way’
Blaine extended his hand out to Kurt while the other rubbed ferociously against the back of his own neck. Kurt did not reply, he later thought this to be a ridiculous idea whilst snuggled up in his own bed.
