“Hello? Kurt? -Please answer me…”
Blaine’s panic was evident through his voice and if this was some sort of- Practical joke, he would probably, well, to be honest, he would probably be so relieved.
But because the boy had not yet received an answer, his heart thrummed all over his body. He could hear it in his ears; feel it in his neck and chest and wrists.
Blaine slipped down into a crouch against his room’s ebony door, muscles taking on a tight and worried stretch. His chiseled face bore a deep, concentrated expression while his ear drums strained for any sort of speech, movement, or breath.
The familiar voice of a loud and constant attention-seeking female broke the muffled silence,
“He’s not even worth it, Kurt…”
There was silence for a few more moments when Blaine’s ears- in all seriousness, perked up like a puppy being called by his master.
“You say that like you actually know him… And you don’t Rachel. He- …He’s my best friend-“
Blaine’s furrowed eyebrows softened, being calmed by Kurt’s voice…
Okay- so, he wasn’t being brutally murdered as Blaine had originally considered.
But he was with Rachel and that could be considered a close second, right?
…….Uh……..
He was joking….
That was a joke. Just a small tension breaker…
Blaine’s heart was relieved of five-billion tons of worry and now only beat with excitement in his chest.
Best friend, eh?
Kurt Hummel’s best friend… If this conversation was referring to him, then he liked that- He liked that a lot.
“My god- you’ve barely- kid- months.”
The phone line was suddenly crackling and Blaine could only catch a few messy words at a time… He also managed to catch that frighteningly protective voice that could only belong to Kurt’s, ‘Sister-from-another-mister’ Mercedes.
Now, Blaine didn’t have a beef with Mercedes… Or anybody for that matter, but, it didn’t seem like she liked him all too much.
Blaine always had a smile for her when they ran into each other; he was always open, friendly, and conversational. So, why Mercedes was out to get him? …He didn’t know.
The phone was absent of static for a few moments to reveal Kurt’s small voice again, miserable with a dash of blatant honesty, forcing his attention.
“I’m in love with him…”
Blaine’s heart bounced in his ears. His brain was positively screaming at that…He was standing on ‘no mans land’ in the course of open fire; A wave of bullets were swarming him, seeping into his skin and burrowing into his skull and bones…
Kurt, who? WHO ARE YOU IN LOVE WITH? Why- What? Are you there? He’s obviously not there dip! Oh god, I’ve finally cracked...My last screw has come unhinged…
Blaine- Shut up. .
“Hello?” Blaine pleaded to the phone stupidly, just for something to say to get him away from talking to himself and his scattered and completely impractical thoughts.
Okay, so maybe he should have just hung up… It had already been made plain and clear that he wasn’t meant as the fourth wheel to this conversation… And it was made even clearer that Kurt had not meant to call him in the first place.
”I like him so much, Rachel…”
Kurt’s voice broke with several sniffles and Blaine felt each end of his heart pulling at the other, stretching to split in half.
Infact, the thick and heavy muscle was trying so hard that he winced and even though it could not logically split in half, it was still just as painful.
The arm that was holding the phone up to his ear was falling asleep, as were his crouched legs.
Gosh Kurt, Who! Who do you like so much??
Who would even do this to him? How could somebody make him this upset by not loving him back… How is it possible for anybody not to love Kurt, anyways? …
I mean, if that was even the case.
If it is, though, I swear I’ll beat the living crap out of-
“Blaine?-“
Still crouched down to the fancy carpeting and balancing on his toes to aid in breaking the tension, Blaine looked up, startled at the call of his name.
“Uh… What are you doing, exactly?”
Blaine immediately clapped his phone shut and cleared his throat, taking notice of Wes’s playful expression…
“Just-You know, Owling…Checking my voicemail.” He gave him a small, very tight and much too panicked smile.
“You’re shaking, bro. Is everything good in the hood of Anderson?”
Wes looked concerned and didn’t know how much his words truly touched on Blaine’s current situation.
“Oh, no, everything’s cool. I’m just having one of those slow days.”
He laughed lightly and scratched at the back of his neck. Sure, everything at his home was well…Or, as well as it could be- which had been what Wes was referring to.
In all actuality, though, if you looked under the hood of his curly head of hair, Blaine was not exactly running so well.
Kurt was entangled in every single one of his thoughts.
He felt sorry…for Kurt, he felt extreme jealousy with a little bit of Kurt peppered on top, and he felt generally miffed off because there was some mystery boy out there, that should have Blaine’s size 9’s up his-
*Ahem* for the sake of Kurt’s beautiful, loving, and gay little heart.
“I see…So- perfect day for crouching out in the hallway, alone…To listen to your voicemail? Yeah, you’re okay, I believe you…”
Wes chuckled as Blaine straightened up, fixing his sweats and giving Wes a, “not-so-reassuring-but-meant-to-look-it smile,”
“I’m glad somebody understands!”
Blaine hollered in falsetto with both thumbs up, before bidding his fellow warbler goodnight and twirling himself back into his dorm.
He hoped that Wes was going to be the lone warbler to notice that something was up with him, because Blaine could only contain his whirlwind of teenaged emotion for so long; And if people asked, they were going to stir a reaction from him…
Blaine would spout out everything like a broken dam. He was not exactly the best at keeping his troubles to himself, unless they were so personal that they were buried under the stresses of school and warbler practice; the untouchable conversation’s…
Before he came out to his parents, being gay was one of his untouchable conversation’s and even if his friends ‘hypothetically’ told him they would still treat him the same way, Blaine couldn’t say it. He wouldn’t admit it, not even to himself- Not until the untouchable grew in strength and confidence, floating to the top of his troubles and he couldn’t take it any more. When he couldn’t handle the gay floating at the surface of his mind, bobbing into his other thoughts and pestering him to his very core,
“I’m fucking gay, damn it!”
Blaine had practically screamed it to an empty house and winced as it echoed through every surface of his third story home and back to him.
And then, he laughed….He laughed like a gigantic idiot, to the point of tears…
Falling back onto his mattress in a gigantic heap of relief…
He was going to have to tell his parents- His close-minded father and his ever finicky and always pretentious mother.
Yeah, the coming out to himself part felt great…But when he told his parents, everything changed, including their amount of respect and even their love for him. They won’t admit to it, though.
His mother still acts like a mother, but she doesn’t have the same loving glint in her eye that she always did- she just didn’t look at him like he was her biological son anymore. But at least his mother still claimed that she loved him-
His father did not look at him…Did not speak to him for an entire year. It took Blaine’s father a year- a year! To even begin to acknowledge him again…And it was during that time that Blaine spent his first school year away at Dalton.
He was now ending his sophomore year at Dalton and still, to this very day, his father’s eyes are cold and emotionless, his mouth a solid frown. Blaine did not receive any happiness or love from that man in the least.
Darkness surrounded him, but the unsubtle light of the moon still penetrated his eyelids…
Sleep was pointless, it seemed…But he knew he needed it for tomorrow.
He had promised Kurt that he would drive all the way out to Lima to take him back to Dalton after his long weekend visit to his parents- which involved waking up at 5 AM to get there and back before midday.
It sort of stung that Kurt was able to visit his family every weekend and he hadn’t seen his since thanksgiving… But when he thought about it, he didn’t really miss anybody in particular…Just his room and his scrappy little Maltese, Moose.
It wasn’t Kurt’s fault, of course, that Blaine’s family was so unwelcome and brooding.
Nor was it his own, he just felt that ugly green monster nipping at his thoughts and forcing him to lay there, awake…Eagle eying the cream colored ceiling as Jeff’s snores bellowed in and out of his ears.
