The French lessons at McKinley were easier, but that didn’t mean that Blaine understood them any more. The hour passed slowly, and Blaine wasn’t really paying attention.Something about the subjunctive or the conditional, and ‘etre’ and ‘avoir’ and then the bell rang.

‘Finally’ Blaine sighed, packing up his satchel and waiting for Kurt.

‘Hey come on French isn’t that bad.’ Kurt laughed, ‘You aren’t as bad as you think you are’

‘Oh I highly doubt that’ Blaine smiled.

‘Come on, I’ll show you to the canteen, we get a twenty minute break after first period.’ Kurt said, leading the way out of a set of double doors.

It was early September, but it was rather cold, ‘Is the canteen outside?’ Blaine joked, but Kurt didn’t laugh.

‘Ah, no. I just prefer to avoid the hallways.’ Kurt replied. Okay. Blaine had hit a nerve. Change subject. Quickly.

‘So apart from French, which you are obviously wonderful at…’

Kurt turned and smiled, ‘Obviously.’

‘What other subjects do you like?’ Blaine asked.

‘History. French and History are the only subjects I bother to pay attention in’.

Kurt opened the door at the back of the canteen, and walked straight to a table in the corner that was already full.

Kurt shrugged off his bag, and sat next to Mercedes. Blaine had heard a lot about this girl, and knew that she was Rachel’s ‘big competition’, even though Rachel would never admit that to anyone but him.

‘Hey guys, this is Rachel’s little brot- sorry’ he looked over to Blaine who just smiled, ‘Anyway, this is Blaine’.

Blaine sat down awkwardly at the edge of the table and was bombarded with questions about his old school, audition songs, and favourite musicials.

‘I see you’ve found the Glee club little bro’, Rachel said as she sat down opposite him.

‘Ah yes, Kurt here has been quite the tour guide’ Blaine smiled.

‘One of my many many talents’ Kurt replied.

Break passed quickly, and Blaine was still deciding whether or not to audition for Glee. On the one hand, he was a natural performer, but on the other he would always be in Rachel’s shadow.

‘Rachel’s little brother’.

Everyone started filing out, but Blaine had a free period next so he made his way over to the counter and made himself a cup of coffee.

‘Bunking already?’ Kurt asked.

‘Ah, not yet. However, a few more French lessons and I may resort to that’. Kurt laughed and Blaine decided he really liked Kurt’s laugh.

‘I’ve got a free period actually. We didn’t have those at Dalton. What are you supposed to do in them?’

Blaine asked.

‘Well..’ Kurt said beside him, making himself a rather strong cup of coffee, ‘We are supposed to do work in them, however us Glee kids normally practise our solos, or just listen to our iPods.’

Kurt threw away the packets of sweetner he had used, ‘I on the other hand’ he whispered, ‘I tend to read vogue and ignore everyone else’.

Blaine laughed. ‘Sounds like a good plan’.

Blaine went to sit down but was interuppted, ‘What are you doing? We don’t spend our frees in the canteen. Nope. Come with me’

Kurt once again led the way, and Blaine reminded himself to thank Kurt later for being so nice to him. First days at new schools always sucked, and people tended to avoid you like the plague, so this was certainly a nice change.

Kurt walked through the hallways this time, and led Blaine to a small room at the end of the corridor.

‘Empty classroom’ Kurt explained, ‘It’s easier to ignore everyone when they’re not around. Less effort.’

They sat in silence for a while, Kurt was reading vogue and Blaine was pretending to text but was really playing Angry Birds on his phone.

‘Can I ask you something?’ Kurt broke the silence, and looked up at Blaine.

‘Uh yeah sure’ Blaine replied.

‘Why did you transfer? From what Rachel said, you were really happy at Dalton.’ Kurt asked.

‘Oh well, it’s a long story’ Blaine explained.

Kurt looked up at the clock, ‘We have time’.

Blaine spent the next twenty minutes talking about how he was bullied at the school he was at before Dalton, and how his aggressors finally pushed him too far, literally. He was pushed off the bleachers and broke his arm. His parents transferred him to Dalton the next day. Dalton was lovely, his friends was nice and he’d enjoyed his time there. But Blaine knew that once he finished at Dalton he’d have to join the real world where people may not agree with his ‘choices’, so after lots of thinking, he decided to transfer to McKinley.

‘Choices?’ Kurt asked.

‘Oh I’m gay’ Blaine explained, ‘Rachel probably already mentioned it’.

‘She didn’t actually… I’m gay too. By the way’ Kurt stumbled over his words.

‘Rachel said.’ Blaine replied.

‘I’ve got to go.’ Kurt picked up his stuff, and went to walk out the door. Shit.

‘Kurt don’t go, I’m sorry if I’ve upset you or something.’ Blaine said.

‘No no it’s not that. I just… You had an out. You were safe. I just don’t understand why you’d come here, where there are jocks around every corner waiting to beat you up or call you names.’

‘I wanted to be brave’ Blaine explained.

‘You’re not being brave, Blaine.’ Kurt sighed, ‘You’re just being stupid.’

Kurt walked out of the door, and the bell rang. Blaine noticed he walked outside, rather than walk down the corridor.

Great. Blaine had already fucked up one friendship on his first day.
