Blaine was back at the café once again. He wasn't sure what made him come back, the cinnamon rolls or the atmosphere. The café seemed different to the other places he would usually go to. Whatever it was that made this café different, Blaine liked it, and so he was back. He took a seat near the counter this time, opened his laptop and started working on his school project. Truth is, school was finished, and that project that he needed to do was already done, he had just needed an excuse to stay for longer. Clicking around he saw movement from the corner of his eye. Turning his head, he saw the man from his previous visit. Today though, he wasn't in a hurry.
“Kurt!” Rachel squeaked from the counter. Her loud voice and huge smile made the man, Kurt, smile back as he walked towards her. She raised the side panel of the counter and practically skipped to hug him.
These signs of affection weren't exactly new to Blaine. He saw his parents hug once in a while and it was something only married or engaged couples would do, but never in public. It wasn't allowed in public, so why were they doing it. The boy found himself confused.
After a while, the two broke away and Rachel went back behind the counter, Kurt joining her in front of it. She put the coffee machine on in order to make Kurt a cup, and quickly turned back to him, still talking. There was a moment of silence between the two, and suddenly, Kurt said, “Rachel Barbara Berry, is that an engagement ring?”
There was a nod, two smiles and a wave of excited squeaks. An old couple in the back shushed the two disapprovingly and the young people quietened down, apologizing. Rachel delivered them a cinnamon roll each as a way to make up for that little incident.
“I can't believe you're engaged! You have to tell me everything! When did he propose? How? Where?” Kurt gushed out. Rachel giggled giddily and smiled secretively. Blaine, still observing the pair became intrigued. He had never heard of people proposing to each other before marriage. Usually, a letter arrived when a person came of age, which stated where and when to meet their future husband or wife. A box with a ring was at the place of the meeting, and the guy was supposed to put the ring on the girl's finger there, to make the two officially engaged. A wedding was to be two weeks after. That was the way Blaine's parents married and that was the way everyone was supposed to marry. How comes Rachel was any different?
“If you don't mind me asking, what's a proposal?”
It was Blaine who asked the question. The two previously happy people looked at him with wide eyes. Kurt choked on his own spit and Rachel stared at him like he was joking.
“You can't be serious. Were you born under a rock?” she asked, still unsure whether he was kidding.
“Rachel, manners,” Kurt whispered to the girl, then turned towards Blaine, “a proposal is when someone asks someone else to marry them. Have you never heard about it before?”
Blaine shook his head no. Rachel was about to open her mouth once again, but Kurt shot her a look that made her think twice. “What's your name?” He asked Blaine.
“Blaine. What's yours?”
“Kurt. Nice to meet you. ”
“That's a lovely name. Nice to meet you too, Kurt.”
Kurt blushed lightly, receiving a curious glance from Rachel. Blaine didn't see the change in the boy though – he was still the same grey color from before. Kurt looked around to see if there was anyone else in the shop. Most of the customers arrived later in the afternoon and the old couple that was there before were leaving. He took a deep breath and asked Blaine, “do you know how your parents got engaged?”
“Of course. They got engaged just like everyone else. They each got a letter, met at a specific date and time, dad was given a box with a ring and he put it on my mom's finger. Then they were engaged,” Blaine replied, like this was something everyone should know. Rachel stifled a gasp, Kurt's jaw dropped but he picked it up immediately.
“Blaine… What color is Rachel's dress?” Kurt asked, unsure.
“Grey. Just like everything else in this room,” he replied, only to be met with two dumbfounded expressions, “why are you staring at me like that?”
Kurt and Rachel shared a look between them. An uncomfortable silence eased its way into the café and settled between the three. Blaine kept on playing with his fingers, looking from Kurt to Rachel and back. The two kept on conversing by solely using their eyes. As time passed, Blaine's patience decreased and he stood up, threw away his coffee cup and with a quick “goodbye”, he walked out of the shop.
