Bob listens to Kurt as he sings, and he knows that something is wrong, terribly wrong. Just like that day, years ago, he pulls the boy into a hug. He holds him close, as tight as he possibly can, and he feels Kurt clinging to him, as if he is a lifeline.
"...would you hold my hand...
If I saw you in heaven...
Would y-you help me st-stand..."
Kurt stops singing, his sobs drenching his words, making it almost impossible to hear what he is saying.
"...Help me..." he whimpers, "please... Bobby... I dont know what to do without him..."
Bob knows who he is talking about, without even asking. He knows that Kurts father is dead, and he also knows that Kurt doesnt want him to say anything. He just wants Bob to hold him, if Kurt wants to talk, he will do so.
They sit there, a long time, no one saying anything. Eventually Kurt stops crying, but they still hold each other close.
"Kurt, I know that this might not be the best time to say this... but I need you to listen to me. " Bob says, pulling away from Kurt to look him in the eyes. "Can you do that for me?"
Kurt nods, but Bob doesnt say anything for almost ten minutes, he has no idea how to say this.
"Bob? You okay?" Kurt asks, looking at him with questioning eyes.
"Yeah, yeah Im okay..." Bob says, nodding, "Just listen will you?"
Then Bob starts to sing, without waiting for Kurt to answer.
Bob:
Its not time to make a change,
Just relax, take it easy.
Youre still young, thats your fault,
Theres so much you have to know.
Find a boy, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but Im happy.
Kurt recognises the song, and tears almost starts to fall again, when he figures out the meaning of it.
I was once like you are now, and I know that its not easy,
To be calm when youve found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything youve got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.
Kurt:
How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.
Its always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now theres a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.
Bob:
Its not time to make a change,
Just sit down, take it slowly.
Youre still young, thats your fault,
Theres so much you have to go through.
Find a boy, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but Im happy.
Both:
All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,
Its hard, but its harder to ignore it.
If they were right, Id agree, but its them you know not me.
Now theres a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.
Their voices melts together, they sounds amazing, if Kurt can say it himself. They should sing together more often. When the song ends, they sit in silent a long time. With any other person it would get weird, and awkward, to just sit there, not saying anything, but not with Bob. Often they dont really talk to each other, they dont have to. They just sit there, watching the people walking by, listening to the world. Almost half an hour passes before any of them talks.
"Hey...Kurt?" Bob says, and looks at him and Kurt nods to show that he is listening, "Ive always seen you as a son of mine, you know that right?"
"Yeah...I know" Kurt laughs," You are like a big brother to me, no offence but... my dad will always be my father to me."
He gives Bob a reassuring smile, what he doesnt expect is for Bob to start laughing.
"What?" he asks. "Whats so funny?"
"We have a weird relationship!" Bob replies. "You are like my son, and I am you brother? Thats pretty creepy!"
Kurt starts cracking up too, and soon they are laughing. Kurt laughs so hard that tears starts appearing in his eyes and he has hard catching his breath. It feels good to laugh, he hasnt done that, for real, in a while. Not since his father died.
"So..." Kurt says after a while. "Have you talked to Rosie yet?"
Bob scoffs, and doesnt look at him. The truth is... Bob is scared. He fears that Rosie wont like him, or at least not in the way he wants her to. He fears the rejection, so... he doesnt talk to her, at all.
"You should..." Kurt continues, when he realises that Bob wont answer, "I am sure she likes you too, why wouldnt she?"
Bob opens his mouth to reply, but Kurt cuts him off with a glare. Oh, that boy has a mean bitch glare, when he wants to.
"And dont come with that "she wont like me" crap!" Kurt says, giving Bob an annoyed glare, "You havent even said: "Hi", have you?"
"Actually, we have talked... "Bob says, punching Kurt playfully on the arm, "...once... I said: hi, and she replied..."
"And..?" Kurt says, waiting for Bob to continue.
"And... I ran..." Bob says, ducking his head, blushing.
"You ran?!" Kurt exclaims, "God, you behave like a thirteen year old girl! You need to talk to her, Bob. Do it tomorrow! Then we meet here tomorrow evening, and you can tell me how it went! You need to-"
"Okay, okay!" Bob holds his hands up in surrender, "I give up! I will talk to her, but what should I say then. I cant just-"
"Hello, is a good start," Kurt jokes, smiling brightly at his friend.
Bob just looks at him and snorts, but when Kurt continues to smile, Bob cracks up a little bit.
"There is no need to be mean, I am not stupid you know" he says.
"Just talk to her, Bob. She will like you, I promise."
"Thanks kiddo... I think I needed that."
Again, it became silent. The only sound was cars driving by at a distance. The park was empty, the light in the trees slowly being put out, leaving the park in darkness. It was a clear, beautiful night, the moon almost full and the stars bright.
"Stars
In your multitudes
Scarce to be counted
Filling the darkness
With order and light
You are the sentinels
Silent and sure
Keeping watch in the night
Keeping watch in the night"
Kurt looks at Bob when he starts singing, he loves to listen when the older man sings. He puts such passion... and emotion to the song, and you could see it, in his eyes... that it was something he loved doing.
"You should serenade her, if you dont know what to say..." he says.
"What? Who?"
"Rosie, she would fall for you immediately. You have a beautiful voice."
To that, Bob didnt say anything, but Kurt didnt really expect him to either. They sit there for almost an hour, just staring out at the night, sometimes one of them saying something, once in a while getting an answer from the other.
When the clock started to near 1am Bob stands up and starts to pack up his things. He says goodbye to Kurt, and leave the park to find someplace to sleep. Kurt stands up too, he needs to go home too. It is starting to get really cold outside.
Just after 1am Kurt arrives at the apartment building where he lived with Simon. Silently he climbs the stairs and opens the door to the apartment. He sneaks inside, trying not to make a sound and carefully closes the door behind him.
The first thing he notices when he steps inside was that it isnt silent in the apartment, like he expected it to be. He can hear music playing in the living room, but he doesnt think much about it, maybe he had forgotten to turn off the radio before he left?
Just as he walks through the doorway into the living room, he sees something in the corner of his eye. The next thing he knows he is slammed against the wall, the back of his head hitting the wall with a crack, making him see stars for a moment. He looks up to see Simons angry face in front of him.
"Where the fuck have you been?!"
