I went back and forth between posting a very short or a very long chapter, and I compromised and just posted two chapters. Double feature, my pretties! Dont say I never give you anything.
Kurt trailed Blaine back to the elevator which they boarded with an elderly woman. The doors closed, and the car began to descend.
"I could have married Douglas Fairbanks," the woman told Kurt and Blaine. It was apropos of nothing, but it gave a welcome break from the tension that was between them like another presence.
Blaine gave Kurt a look. Both Kurt and Blaine were very familiar with the history of the King of Hollywood, and they knew that he had died in the thirties. It couldnt have happened; the old woman was clearly senile.
Kurt gave her a big smile and asked, "Is that right?"
The woman gave him a broad, toothless smile and nodded happily, "He was working in a hardware store, and he talked to me every time I came in." She put a hand on Kurts arm and leaned in, "He was so handsome," she whispered conspiratorially.
Both Blaine and Kurt nodded. The old woman might have been crazy, but she wasnt wrong about that.
"I didnt want a simple clerk," the lady continued. "I wanted life to be more exciting. So I told him ‘no. He asked and asked, but I kept saying ‘no. Then he married that woman. Whats her name?"
"Mary Pickford," Kurt supplied.
"No, the other one."
"Sylvia. Lady Ashley," Kurt proffered.
"No, the first one."
"Anna Beth Sully," Blaine supplied, and Kurt raised an eyebrow.
"Thats right. Anna Beth Sully," the old woman spit it out like it was one bad word. "And then he went to that Los Angeles and became a famous movie star. I would have liked that." The woman shrugged bony shoulders, "But I thought he was just going to be a clerk. Goes to show you that you never know whats going to happen. You never know." She tilted her rheumy eyes toward Kurt, "And even if hed just been a clerk, he was still handsome." She patted Kurts arm, "Dont worry too much about the future, because it never turns out like you expect."
Kurt gave the woman a small, indulging smile. Then he turned to Blaine and asked, "How did you remember Anna Beth Sully?"
Blaine shrugged, "I dont know. I just did."
"Huh," said Kurt.
They both turned around to look back at the old woman, but she had vanished from the elevator without a trace.
Kurt looked at Blaine with shock widened eyes, "Which one of them do you think she was?"
Blaine shook his head slowly, rubbing at the goosebumps on his arms, "Maybe they enlisted a ghost friend."
"Maybe. Can they shape shift?"
"Youre asking me?"
Just then the elevator dinged, and the two men stepped out into the lobby and walked to the street in silence.
Blaine turned to look at Kurt. He gave him a smile that didnt quite reach his eyes, "Thanks for meeting me here. Ill see you, okay?"
Kurt put a hand out and grasped Blaines upper arm. He opened his mouth to say something, but then he closed it again, and Blaine saw the shudders fall, once again, over Kurts eyes. "See you," Kurt said finally.
