Kurt and Blaine stood side by side at the bathroom sink looking into the mirror, Blaine with an electric razor in one hand and Kurt’s hand intertwined in the other.
“Well,” he said, “I always wondered what would happen if I shaved my head and started from scratch. Maybe it’ll grow back straight.”
“Don’t even joke about that, my beautiful curly-haired boy,” Kurt said and sighed. After his senior prom, his first time seeing his boyfriend sans hair product, he had declared that it was going to be a gel-free summer, joking that his perpetual gel helmet was eventually going to make his hair fall out. He regretted the comment now, especially because, during that gel-free summer, Kurt had grown quite fond of tangling his fingers in Blaine’s thick locks. And even though Blaine had relapsed with the hair gel when school started again, making it more difficult to run his fingers through Blaine’s hair, he would miss it. Even after everything that treatment had put them through, this was the day that Kurt had been dreading most.
“Ready?” Kurt asked, his gaze meeting Blaine’s in the mirror.
“I suppose,” Blaine said, handing the razor to Kurt. He knelt in front of the sink and Kurt stood behind him, turning the razor on. The buzzing drowned out both their thoughts of anything else but what they were doing, and several minutes later, they were standing in front of the mirror in their original position, only this time Blaine was completely and utterly bald.
“Well, on the bright side, you won’t have to worry about how you’re going to do your hair for prom on Saturday,” Kurt said, turning his gaze from the mirror to Blaine’s face.
“Oh my God, prom. I completely forgot about prom, Kurt. I can’t go now!”
“What?!” Kurt gasped, “It’s your senior prom, Blaine, you can’t not go! It’s once in a lifetime.”
“But not really,” Blaine protested, “I already went to your senior prom. And your junior one. I had the experience. How is this one going to be any different anyway?”
“Because, my love, this one is all yours. It’s all about you, not me, and if you miss it you’ll regret it forever and ever and I, for one, am not going to let that happen. We are going.” Blaine groaned. “Now come on,” Kurt continued, “You have a doctor’s appointment and I promised your mother we wouldn’t be late this time.” Kurt stood almost on his tip toes to kiss the top of his boyfriend’s bald head and left the bathroom. “Chop, chop,” he called from the hallway. Blaine took one last look in the mirror, whimpered a little, switched off the light and followed his boyfriend down the stairs and out the door.
