“What time is he coming home?” Kurt asked quietly and Blaine trained his eyes on the table top.
“Probably around six.”
“I could come home with you for a little bit, if you want,” Kurt suggested hopefully and Blaine would be lying if he said he wouldn’t feel better with Kurt there. But he also knew that if his dad came home early and Kurt was over, things would get a lot worse. He chewed on the inside of his cheek as he deliberated.
“Why don’t we get some coffee?” Kurt smiled softly and nodded his head.
“Sure.” Blaine looked back at his boyfriend and tried to shove away his anxiety for the time being. He had all afternoon to worry about what would happen with his father, and there was really nothing he could do about the situation at the time, so he might as well try relax a little. Blaine moved one of his hands to Kurt’s leg and gave his thigh a gentle squeeze. Kurt leaned forward and pressed a kiss to Blaine’s temple, making him feel warm. It was a strange sensation, but in the best possible way. He leaned his head against Kurt’s shoulder and Kurt continued rubbing circles on his back.
They spent the rest of their lunch period huddled close together, talking on their own and laughing and always keeping some sort of physical connection. It was the most intimate they’d ever been in public, and Blaine wished they could do it more often. He wished they lived in a place where they could walk hand in hand without being mistreated and judged. He wanted nothing more than to be able to kiss his boyfriend wherever and whenever he wanted.
Unfortunately, this thought brought him full circle back to his father. How could he hope for everyone else to approve of his relationship if his own father didn’t? Blaine took a deep breath. He didn’t know for sure how his father felt about it yet; maybe there was a chance he would be happy for Blaine. But even if he wasn’t, even if his father hated the fact that they were together, it wouldn’t really matter. Because he had Kurt and nothing could tear them apart. Blaine would be with Kurt for as long as he would have him, and if Kurt felt the same way then why should anyone else’s opinion matter?
Once the bell rang, Blaine opted to walk Kurt to his next class. Since it wasn’t too far away from the cafeteria, the pair walked slowly and Blaine slipped his hand into Kurt’s as they strolled through the hall. He stopped Kurt a little before they reached the door of his class so they could talk for a moment before he had to get moving to History. “Kurt,” he began, his mind reeling and a million thoughts swirled through his brain. However, there was one thought that was bigger than the rest and Blaine was having trouble biting it down any longer.
“Yeah, Blaine?” he asked, smiling up at Blaine with those sparkling eyes that seemed to hold all of time and space. Blaine felt like he was going to float off the face of the Earth.
“I-” but something was stopping him from voicing his feelings. Because that’s exactly what he wanted to tell Kurt. He wanted to tell the boy how much he loved his company. How much he loved his smile. How much he loved his voice. How much he loved everything about him. Mostly, how he thought he was falling in love with him. But something made him recoil from the admission. “I’ll meet you by your locker after school?” Kurt nodded, still smiling at him beautifully and Blaine mentally kicked himself for chickening out. He leaned in and gave Kurt a peck on the lips. “Good luck in there,” he said jerking his head toward the door.
“Good luck to you in Alexander’s,” Kurt said with a slight smirk. Blaine glared at Kurt playfully and the other boy laughed lightly as he walked away and into his class, only pausing slightly in the doorway to wave at Blaine over his shoulder. Blaine stood there for a moment longer before weaving through the late students and a couple hallways until he reached his classroom. He slipped into his desk just as the bell rang.
His last two classes of the day were uneventful, and now that he was looking forward to spending time with Kurt after school, time seemed to crawl by; he practically jumped up and clicked his heels together when the last bell of the day rang through his Chemistry class.
He waited at Kurt’s locker for all of one minute until the other boy showed up and they made their way out of the building together. Since Blaine and Rachel had taken his car that morning, they met up with her briefly to give her the car keys before the boys headed to Kurt’s car and drove to the coffee shop.
After a short argument of who was paying for coffee- Kurt had insisted- they sat down at a small table in the corner of the shop and began talking lightly about books and magazines, television and movies, and everything in between. It was comfortable and easy and Blaine felt that familiar flare in his chest just being around Kurt. The boy had just finished talking about the upcoming movie rendition of Les Mis and Blaine couldn’t stop himself from continuing his earlier train of thought. He was definitely falling for Kurt.
“Kurt, I think I’m-”
“Oh God,” muttered Kurt. Blaine noticed that he suddenly became a little stiffer and Blaine followed his line of view toward the front of the shop where he could see the back of a tall man with short blond hair. It wasn’t until he turned to laugh at the person next to him that Blaine saw his face. Liam. Are you fucking kidding me? Well, this day just keeps getting better. Blaine looked back to Kurt and saw how uneasy he was.
“Hey, it’s okay,” Blaine said softly as he leaned over the table and took Kurt’s hand in his. “Have you two talked since…” Blaine trailed off at Kurt’s expression. “No, of course not.” Kurt looked back over at the front counter and Blaine was wondering why Kurt was acting so strangely. I mean sure, ex encounters are always awkward, but Kurt and Blaine were in the corner of the room halfway hidden behind a column, so the chances of them having to actually talk to Liam were extremely slim. Wait…Kurt didn’t still have feelings for the guy, did he? No, of course he didn’t. He couldn’t. But then why was he acting like this? “Kurt?” Blaine tried, but the other boy didn’t seem to hear him. “Kurt?” Still nothing. “Kurt!”
“What?” Kurt snapped in a hushed tone. Blaine fell back into his chair and rolled his eyes. “What’s with you?”
“What’s with-? You know what, it’s nothing. I have to go.” Blaine slipped his hand out of Kurt’s and grabbed his bag.
“Blaine, it’s only 4:30,” Kurt argued but he was already on his feet.
“I should be home early anyway. Make it seem like I’m doing homework or something at least a little productive.” Blaine walked around the table and kissed Kurt’s forehead. “I’ll talk to you later if I can.” He began to walk away, but Kurt called after him.
“Blaine, wait! At least let me drive you home!” But Blaine just kept walking. He didn’t know why, but the way that Kurt had been looking at Liam had set him on edge. And as much as he wanted to deny it, Blaine was feeling jealous for some reason.
He made his way to the door and thought he was safe until he almost ran into someone. “’Scuse me, man,” the body said and Blaine looked up to find a young man, around his own age, standing there.
“Sorry, I wasn’t looking,” Blaine said and made to walk around the boy when another person joined him.
“Steven, who are you-? Oh. Hi, Blaine,” Liam said in a strained voice.
“Liam. Uh, I better get going,” Blaine said awkwardly. He turned to leave, but something stopped him. “Are you two…?” Blaine trailed off when Liam put a possessive arm around the other man’s, Steven’s, waist. Blaine sighed internally at the fact that Liam was most likely doing it to ensure Blaine didn’t take another one of his boyfriends. “Congrats. You guys look happy together.”
“We are,” Steven said as he smiled up at Liam and Blaine felt less guilty about how everything had happened. They did look very happy. Blaine smiled at them and finally had the door open when he heard Liam’s voice behind him.
“You better be treating Kurt right.”
Blaine walked into the parking lot and looked around before sighing. How the hell was he getting home? He pulled out his phone and dialed Rachel’s number, but she didn’t pick up. So naturally, he tried her again two more times. Still no answer. Blaine sighed and looked through his contacts wondering who he should try next. Finn? No, Blaine was still upset with Blaine because of his comment earlier in the bathroom. Blaine knew it was silly, but Finn’s words had really stung. Sure, Blaine was small, but he was also tough; he didn’t need anyone to fight his battles for him.
He tried a few other people before finally getting an answer. A few minutes later a black truck pulled up in front of the Lima Bean and Blaine climbed in the passenger seat. “Thanks for the lift, Puck.”
“No, thank you,” Puck said slyly. Blaine looked over at the other boy tentatively. Puck began to drive out of the parking lot and down the street- past the turn off to Blaine’s neighborhood.
“Puck where are we going?”
“I just need to make a quick stop first.”
“But you past my house aready. Why didn’t you just drop me off first?” Blaine asked a little nervously. Where the hell were they going?
“Relax. My assistant called, said he couldn’t make it because he got the freaking chicken pox. I need a right hand man.”
“Jesus I do not want to be your right hand,” Blaine muttered. “Besides, I have to be home. Like now.”
“Chill, dude. It’ll take five minutes. Ten tops.” Then why did Blaine get the feeling he would be very, very late tonight?
