Kurt snuggled gently into the space beside an angelic-looking Blaine, taking care not to wake him. About three hours later, although it felt like 5 minutes, Kurt was woken up by Blaine, screaming.
“Blaine, Blaine, what is it?” asked Kurt stroking Blaine's curls that were damp with sweat.
“No, JJ, stop, please, stop…”
“Blaine, everything is fine, I’m here, shush… Jermaine is not going to hurt you anymore.”
Blaine shook himself awake. His breathing was shallow and rapid.
“Blaine, are you okay.”
Blaine took a few more breaths before responding. His heart was racing; he was doused in a cold sweat.
“Jermaine was hitting me and I couldn’t escape and-and,” sobbed Blaine.
“Everything is going to be okay - Jermaine isn’t here,” said Kurt in soothing tones.
“Kurt?”
“Yeah?”
“Sing to me? Please, your voice is so beautiful.”
“What do you want me to sing?”
“Um, Soft Kitty? My mom used to sing it when me and my twin, Cooper, had nightmares.”
“I’m sorry, Blaine, I don’t know that song,” said Kurt apologetically.
“I’ll teach you… Come on. Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur,” Blaine said slightly childlike.
“Soft kitty, warm kitty little ball of fur,” Kurt sang softly, stroking Blaine's curls with one hand, brushing his nose with the other.
“Happy kitty, sleepy kitty, purr, purr, purr,” said Blaine.
“Happy kitty, sleepy kitty purr, purr, purr,” Kurt finished softly.
“Thank you, Kurt,” said Blaine smiling. “You’re a great friend. Thank you for staying and for helping me realise that I needed to get out… Just thank you for everything.”
“You’re welcome, Blaine. I’ll always be there for you, no matter what; it’s what friends are for,” Kurt smiled.
“Thank you.”
Blaine fell asleep again, snuggled into the crook of Kurt’s neck. Kurt breathed in a lungful of Blaine’s scent; he smelt like cinnamon and sandalwood. Kurt tried not to enjoy Blaine's proximity to him too much. He began to drift off again to the sound of Blaine's breathing. Kurt was awoken yet again but by Blaine sobbing this time.
“What up, Blaine?”
“J-Jermaine, wa-was in a car accident… He didn’t get back home. I-I need to go see if he-he’s okay…” sobbed Blaine.
“Blaine, its 2am…”
“But I have to… I can’t sleep now. I’m the only person they called… He’s got no-one there Kurt!” said Blaine, starting to panic, his taking in short little breaths.
“Blaine, calm down, breathe, breathe,” said Kurt, soothingly rubbing Blaine’s arm. “After what he’s done are you sure you want to go?”
“Y-yes, I need to go, I’m one of his only friends, Kurt, I need to be there for him.”
“Okay, if you’re sure, Blaine. Would you like me to drive you?”
“Err- um yeah, if you’re sure, Kurt. I-I mean I could drive myself.”
“No, you can’t, Blaine, you are in no fit state to drive. I’m taking you, come on, get dressed, I’ll make us some coffee.”
“O-okay. Thank you, Kurt,” said Blaine as he plucked some clothes from his dresser and entered the bathroom to get changed.
Kurt waited at the door for Blaine; two travel coffee mugs in-hand. Blaine looked so good in his jeans, but now was not the time to bring that up, Blaine needed a friend now.
“Thank you, Kurt, thank you for doing this.”
“You’re welcome, Blaine. It’s what friends are for,” said Kurt as they ran from Blaine's house to Kurt’s navigator.
The ride to the hospital was silent; Blaine fell deep into his thoughts about Jermaine, and how maybe if he hadn’t lied and re-joined glee, Jermaine wouldn’t be in hospital, they’d probably be snuggled in Blaine’s bed in deep sleep. It was his fault. Maybe he shouldn’t have let Jermaine drive in the state he was in… He should have let him stay in the guest room, and then he wouldn’t have crashed. They parked up outside the hospital and Blaine went inside, Kurt following close behind.
“Erm, hello, I got a phone call about Jermaine Thoms. I was told he was here.”
“Ah yes, you must be the boyfriend,” said a nurse. Blaine didn’t bother to correct her. “And who’s this?”
“I’m Kurt Hummel, a friend of Blaine and Jermaine,” said Kurt.
“Okay, right this way, boys. He’s still in surgery but here’s the waiting room. A doctor will come and get you when he’s out.”
Kurt and Blaine sat in the waiting room, waiting for news.
