Kurt drove home that evening, allowing all the heartbreak and sadness out because no one could see him show weakness when he was in his car. He allowed his mind to wonder, he allowed his mind to think about Blaine, and how he was going to try to win Blaine over. Maybe he could sing to him though Kurt hadn’t sung in months because it reminded him of the life and friends he left behind for the white and red uniform he wears now.

“Hey, Kurt,” said Quinn cheerfully, “I’ve got a tutor session with Finn tomorrow, would you help me pick the best outfit?”

“Sure. How is tutoring the giant going? Has he fallen for you yet?” Kurt joked. Quinn was absolutely in love with Finn, so when she’d found out he needed a tutor…

“I think he is starting to - he couldn’t stop staring during our last session.”

“Maybe that had something to do with the cat suit you were wearing? I must admit even I had to stare… It wasn’t you best look, Q.”

“Yeah, I know, that’s why I need your expert eye. You are great at that stuff.”

“Well thank you, Q,” said Kurt as Mr Schue walked in.

“Good afternoon, class,” said Mr Schue. “Kurt, you said you had a great idea for a number for sectionals.”

“Yeah, err Brittany, Santana, Quinn,” said Kurt to the three girls, “come help me out.”

Kurt nodded to the band that began to play ‘Single Ladies’ and Kurt, Brittany, Santana, and Quinn began to dance. When the song ended the choir room erupted with applause .

“Well, I think we’ve just found our opening number for sectionals!”

The three girls enveloped Kurt in a hug.

“We did it, Kurt, we won Sectionals,” squealed Brittany.

Kurt laughed, he loved this trio. But how was he going to tell them he’d signed up for Cheerio try-outs? Everyone knew the rules about cheerleading and Glee Club - you had to do one or the other, no-one could get those to universes to harmonize.

When Kurt arrived home, no-one was there. Thankfully, Kurt thought. No one would hear him sing. He sat down and picked up his old guitar. It had been years since he’d played so he just hoped he still remembered how to play.

I shouldn't love you but I want to
I just can't turn away
I shouldn't see you but I can't move
I can't look away

And I don't know how to be fine when I'm not
'Cause I don't know how to make a feeling stop

Just so you know
This feeling's taking control of me
And I can't help it
I won't sit around, I can't let him win now
Thought you should know
I've tried my best to let go of you
But I don't want to
I just gotta say it all
Before I go
Just so you know

It's getting hard to be around you
There's so much I can't say
Do you want me to hide the feelings
And look the other way

And I don't know how to be fine when I'm not
'Cause I don't know how to make a feeling stop

It felt good to be playing again. Kurt imagined singing this to Blaine, and how Blaine’s eyes would light up. Kurt knew how much Blaine loved music; he was in the Glee club too. The Glee Club he’d let down. The Glee Club he’d abandoned when they needed him the most.

This emptiness is killing me
And I'm wondering why I've waited so long
Looking back I realize
It was always there just never spoken
I'm waiting here...been waiting here

Just so you know
This feeling's taking control of me
And I can't help it
I won't sit around, I can't let him win now
Thought you should know
I've tried my best to let go of you
But I don't want to
I just gotta say it all
Before I go
Just so you know

“I haven’t heard you sing in ages, Kurt, is everything okay?” asked Burt.

It was true, Kurt had given up singing when he joined the Cheerios, and he’d abandoned his friends, the ones who first accepted him for who he was. Quinn, Santana, and Brittany… He’d completely left them behind, never looked back. Kurt missed them sometimes; the four of them had been so close.

“No, I’m not, dad,” said Kurt.

“Want to talk about it?” asked Burt, concern in his voice.

“Well, there’s this guy that I like but he’s taken. I just don’t know what to do. What would you do dad, you know if there was a girl you liked?”

“Well, I’d just tell her. It’s what I did with your mom. She was dating this other guy Richard something or other. I just walked straight up to her and said: ‘Lizzie, I really like you and I know you have Richard but I just needed to tell you’ and after that, it all fell into place.”

“Awww, dad,” said Kurt getting up and walking over to his dad. “That’s really sweet but I don’t think that’ll work with Blaine though, he really loves his boyfriend.”

“Well, it wouldn’t hurt to try, Kurt. Anyway, what about Chandler? Aren’t you guys dating?” asked Burt. Kurt hadn’t told his dad about the break up.

“Well, we split up, he had kissed another guy… He came clean about it to me, at least he told me… But I decided to end it, because I just couldn’t be in a relationship with someone who cheated,” said Kurt sadly.

“Oh, too bad, I liked that kid, he seemed nice,” said Burt. “Tea will be ready in 15 minutes, Carole has just started it.”

“Okay, dad,” said Kurt. “Oh and, dad, thanks for the advice, I know it must have been hard for you.”

Burt gave a half shrug and a smile.

’Kurt, you could just tell him, you know, at least then you won’t be hiding any.’

‘But I cant do that now. He’s only JUST started dating Jermaine, and what of it doesn’t work out like dad and mom?’

‘But what if it does, I mean, he looks just as happy when he’s talking to you as he does with Jermaine.’

‘He does?! Why didn’t you tell me?’

‘What, you didn’t notice?’

‘NO, you were too busy malfunctioning over his eyes, and ass, and smile and his everything… What were we talking about?’

‘Well, he does have a nice everything. All I’m saying, Kurt, is that it is worth a shot.’

‘Maybe, if I can work up the courage, but he really is amazing… If I was the old me, he’d be way out of my league… He still is.’

‘KURT! He is perfect for you, don’t bring yourself down.’
