Author's Notes:

Kurt sat bolt upright almost knocking Blaine, who was curled into him, off the bed. What was his dad doing back he wasn’t meant to be back until tomorrow evening, after Blaine had left. This was going to be a long explanation, as well as awkward for both parties involved. Kurt had already had ‘The Talk’ with his father, which was incredibly cringe-worthy for both his dad and Kurt himself.

“Dad?” said Kurt sleepily. “What are you doing back?”

“I came home early to spend some time with my sons” said Burt, looking disapprovingly at Kurt. “But instead I find you having a sleep over!”

“Wha!” said Blaine, looking around the room alarmed by the voices and falling off the bed.

“Kurt! Living room now” said Burt as he turn on his heels and left.

“Wha’s happ’nin’” said Blaine slightly confused from the floor.

“My dad’s home, I’ll be right back baby… promise”

“Should I go?” asked Blaine, “He soundeded angry”

“No, no, no baby… I’ll be right back promise, you okay?” said Kurt “He’ll be fine”

Blaine nodded, Kurt kissed him on the top of the head and followed his dad down the stairs to the living room, figuring out how to explain it, how exactly to tell him. He couldn’t really tell him the whole truth as to why Blaine was there, he couldn’t tell Burt how Blaine was treated because it wasn’t for Kurt to tell….

~~~
Kurt entered the living room where Burt was pacing in front of the television; Carole was sat on the couch. Burt was frowning disappointed in Kurt. Kurt stood awkwardly in his PJ pants, waiting for his dad to speak first.
“So?” he said eventually, “Care to explain yourself?!”
“Nothing happened!” said Kurt, “He wanted to spend the night and we fell asleep watching a movie. That’s all… he just wanted to be away from home”
“Oh really? Kurt… I was young once… I know how teenage boys think! Don’t think I couldn’t hear you and that Chandler guy when you had him round” Burt visibly cringed. “You don’t think I wanted to have ‘sleep overs’ with your mother when we were younger”
Kurt visibly cringed, turning red; His dad stared back at him. He looked back sheepishly, knowing that his dad was disappointed.
“NOTHING HAPPENED, Dad! Nothing has ever happened between Blaine and I. We’ve only just started dating…He’s different… I love him and we need to go at his pace and I’m perfectly okay with taking it slowly with him… he’s worth it…”
Burt looked at Kurt, Kurt stared straight back. Burt could see that Kurt was telling the truth, it was clear that he really cared about Blaine and that he meant a lot to his son. He still couldn’t shake the niggling feeling in the back of his head that he knew Blaine from somewhere.
“It’s late so he can stay, but you’re not staying the same bed. Or room for that matter”
“Fine I’ll sleep on the couch” said Kurt, trying to hide the smile.
“Next time sweetie, just ask first” said Carole kindly. Kurt smiled thankfully to her she was so understanding. “Where’s Finn?”
“Puckerman’s” Finn totally owed him for that “Can I at least check Blaine’s okay? These situations… he doesn’t cope well” said Kurt, he voice sounding more desperate than he wanted it to.
“Okay but if you’re not back down here in two minutes you’re grounded” said Burt sternly.
“Okay” said Kurt as he headed back upstairs to talk to Blaine.
“You’re being too harsh on him,” said Carole softly, when Kurt was out of earshot, placing a hand on Burt’s upper arm “He’s a sensible boy… and I’m sure you were more rambunctious when you were his age”
“I know... but he’s still my little boy” said Burt, looking at Carole.
“He’s eighteen, honey”
“He’ll always be my little boy…”said Burt, watching Kurt go up the stairs
~~~
Kurt walked up the stairs and to his room. Blaine was sat up on Kurt’s bed getting dressed slowly. He walked over carefully, and sat down next to him wrapping an arm around him, knowing Blaine needed the comfort. Blaine rested his head on Kurt’s shoulder, snuggling into him breathing in his scent.

“Bee?” he said quietly. “You okay?”

“Sorry” Blaine mumbled.

“What are you sorry for?”

“I-I got you in trouble…”

“It’s not your fault Bee.”

“I… I should g-go home… He’ll be asleep or, or out getting drunk… I’ll be safe…”

“Blaine Theodore Anderson you are not going home this late.” said Kurt. “I won’t let you…I’ll be just downstairs if you need me at all okay…”

“I’ll sleep on the couch instead… It’s really fine…I’m kicking you out of your bed”

“First of all you’re not, my dad is and secondly guests don’t sleep on the couch especially sexy ones like you” Kurt smirked, Blaine gave a small smile. “I love you, Blaine.”

“I love you too, are you sure you wouldn’t rather sleep here, I really don’t mind the couch…”

“Well I mind you sleeping on the couch” he lent in and kissed him softly, Blaine kissed him back sucking on his lower lip. Kurt could hear his father’s footsteps.

“Okay…” Blaine said, a little breathless from the kiss.

“I’ll take my phone, if you need me just call okay?”

“Yeah okay…goodnight”

“Goodnight Blaine,” said Kurt kissing his forehead “I’m coming dad! No need to hover at my door!”

Kurt headed back downstairs and tried to get comfy on the couch. He thought of Blaine…. upstairs, alone. He just hoped he’d be okay and wouldn’t have any nightmares; He couldn’t stand the thought of Blaine waking up from one of those without someone there to comfort him, like he used to. Kurt allowed his mind to wander, he thought about why his mother would leave Blaine alone with such a vile man… he thought about the face his dad pulled when he learnt that Blaine was an Anderson. He wanted to know what significance that it had to his dad, he needed to know these things. He was going to find out…

~~~
Blaine woke silently in the morning, he crept downstairs and found his way to the kitchen and started making coffee. He searched the cabinets and the refrigerator, He wanted to make them all breakfast, to say thank you for letting him stay last night. He decided on a full breakfast: eggs, bacon sausage, homemade hash browns, some pancakes and his signature syrup. Kurt awoke with a glorious scent in his nostrils; he went up to his room to find Blaine. When he got there the bed was empty and made, his heart sank thinking that Blaine had left in the night, but he saw his backpack still sitting at the foot of the bed… He hadn’t left. Kurt went to the hallway to find Burt and Carole wondering out of their room, sniffing the air, sleepily walking across the landing.
“Something smells good” said Burt.
“Kurt? Are you cooking breakfast?” Carole asked.
“No…I thought it was one of you, I came up to get Blaine but he’s gone…” Kurt said, looking downstairs, his brain not fully putting two and two together.
The three of them headed downstairs into the kitchen. Blaine was finishing off the pancakes; he had flour in his hair on his pyjamas. His hair was ungelled and bed messy, Kurt watched Blaine from the other side of the kitchen, biting his lip. He looked so cute.
“Blaine sweetie” said Carole, “You didn’t have to do this”
He jumped slightly; he hadn’t noticed them stood in the kitchen. He turned slowly and saw them looking like a deer caught in the headlights. He panicked; scared they were going to be mad at him.
“I wanted to… you, um, let me stay… I’m sorry; I Just wanted to thank you. I’ll ask next time…”
“Blaine, it’s lovely…” said Carole. “You don’t need to apologise”
“You go sit down I’ll bring it all in for you” said Blaine smiled.
“Let me help?” said Burt, “You’ve cooked it all.”
“It’s perfectly fine sir, I can manage…” He flashed Burt his most charming smile.
“Okay...” said Burt, as he walked in to the dining room where Carole and Kurt were sat waiting.
Blaine carried all the food in like he would do at breadsticks, serving coffee to them all before taking a seat across from Kurt. Kurt smiled at him, gratefully for the breakfast. They all helped themselves to the delicious buffet laid before them.
“This is delicious, Blaine” Carole said. “Where did you learn to cook?”
“My mom taught me… before she left…” he said softly, he looked down at his plate; Kurt rubbed his foot up Blaine’s leg, in an attempt to comfort him.
“Oh?” said Carole “Sorry about that Blaine”
“It’s fine…. Just me and Mr- My dad now.” said Blaine looking anxiously around to see if anyone noticed, Kurt smiled softly and Burt gave Blaine an odd look, but he brushed it aside. “How is everyone else enjoying breakfast?”
“It’s really good Bee.” said Kurt with a smile.
“It’s delicious Blaine, thank you” said Burt.
“Thank you and you’re welcome it’s the least I could do.”
The four of them ate the breakfast, Burt and Carole started to clear all the dishes but Blaine stopped them and started to clear them up. He wanted to stay over more often; it was a nice break from his house where he basically lived in his own bedroom. Kurt’s family was a real family it small, but welcoming and warm. Just like the family Blaine had always wanted, it was how he imagined life with his mom and Cooper would be.
“It’s okay, you guys sit down, finish your coffee… I’ll wash up. And I’ll replace the stuff I used” said Blaine
“You really, really don’t have to son” said Burt
“You sure? You guys were so kind to let me stay last night.” said Blaine, he kept his own.
“You don’t have to replace anything. It’s really, really fine son” Burt said “We all ate breakfast”
“Are you sure you don’t want a hand Blaine?” asked Carole.
“Yeah, I’ll be fine” he said his voice slightly shaky, stacking the dishes up. “Just sit and enjoy your coffee”
He walked to the kitchen, cleared the plates off and started to wash up tears rolling softly down his cheeks. He had forgotten what it was like to have a family meal like that, they hadn’t had one since the night his mom and Cooper left. He’d never really known anything like this Burt was so kind and soft, he loved Kurt unconditionally, he didn’t hurt him or call him names after finding them, and the way he treated Blaine as one of his own. Blaine liked Burt a lot... he was nice. When Blaine was finished, he turned and slid down the cabinets to the floor putting his head in his hands.
“Bee?” asked Kurt as he came into the Kitchen “You’ve been a long time. Are you okay?”
“Yeah…” said Blaine, his voice strangled
“Hey,” Kurt said sitting down next to him “What’s up?”
“Nothing…” said Blaine, Kurt gave him a look, “Okay, I just… I’m not used to family life and meals, and your dad is just so nice and kind”
“Oh Baby…”he said softly wrapping an arm around him
“I’m just not used to it you know… and the last time I had a family meal was the night my mom left”
“I’m sorry Blaine…” said Kurt, “It was a lovely thing to do… you didn’t have to do it”
“I wanted to,” said Blaine.
“I know you did…Do you want to come back in and sit with us?”
“Yeah… that would be nice”
Kurt and Blaine entered the dining room again, this time Kurt sat next to Blaine. Burt eyed them slightly but smiled all the same. He could see that Blaine made his son happy, a lot happier than he’d been all summer and he was grateful for that.
“So Blaine, what do you want to do when you grow up?” asked Carole
“I’ve always loved the idea of becoming a writer, you know? Like for a newspaper or maybe stories… I have ideas scribbled in notebooks and stuff…”
“That sounds great Blaine” said Burt. “Kurt said you’re a football fan, what’s your favourite team”
“Ohio Buckeyes, sir” said Blaine
“You don’t have to call me sir, Buddy. Just call me Burt,” Burt smiled at Blaine, secretly enjoying how nervous Blaine was around him.
“Sorry sir, I mean Burt” said Blaine
“It’s okay buddy, Hey, there’s a game on next Saturday, wanna come over and watch with me and Finn?”
“Yeah sounds great… I’d only be watching it on my own anyway, if my dad’s not around…” said Blaine shifting uncomfortably, Kurt took Blaine hand in his, squeezing it gently.
“Oh? Does he usually watch them with you?” Burt asked.
“No”
“Oh?” said Burt he gave Blaine a puzzling look.
“Yeah... I should get going really I think, I’ve got lots of homework to do and I need to go to the store” said Blaine, he started to get a little panicky; Kurt felt him tense slightly next to him. “And get some food for next week”
“Oh? Is your father out of town?” asked Carole. “You could stay here if he is?
“Um no… I um… I just like to cook my own meals… yeah” said Blaine “If it was up to my dad all we’d eat is take-out”
“Okay Blaine” said Burt slightly confused. “It was really nice of you to make breakfast. Thank you… “
“Thank you for letting me stay… sorry I didn’t ask,” said Blaine. “I will in future…”
“Its okay Kiddo,” said Burt, “See ya round?”
“Yeah, see you. thank you again Burt”
Blaine stood up and extended his hand to Burt, Burt chuckled shook his head, he stood up and pulled him in to a hug.
“That’s not how we say goodbye in this family son” he grinned and let Blaine go. “It was lovely to meet you again Blaine.”
“Nice to meet you all too… I’ll just, I’ll just go get my stuff” said Blaine, before leaving the dining room and heading up to Kurt's room to pack away his stuff.
“Blaine? is everything okay?” said Kurt entering his room.
“I don’t know… I kinda forgot that dads were meant to be nice, you know… I hardly know your dad and yet he’s been more of a dad to me than my own has in 5 years.” said Blaine honestly “It was a little overwhelming…”
“Oh Blaine… I really don’t know what to say…”
“Its fine you don’t have to say anything, but I do have to go… I need to do some shopping and then I have the night shift at Breadstix, I’m covering for Dave. Pop in for a bit later if you like or you can text me?”
“How about I do both?” Kurt said with a smile “But you’re not going anywhere until I get a morning kiss, beautiful”
Blaine stood on his tiptoes and Kissed Kurt softly. Kurt cupped his cheek, deepening the kiss. Blaine sucked on Kurt's lower lip, Kurt let out a soft moan. There was a cough at the door, the two boys turned crimson, the looked towards the door and stared.
“Um, sorry” said Blaine “We were just saying good bye”
“and I was just letting you know I was here”
“daaaad” Kurt groaned. “It was just a kiss”
“I could see that”
Kurt rolled his eyes and turned back to Blaine.
“You stay safe okay? Love you”
“Love you more” said Blaine
“Love you most” said Kurt back grinning.
Blaine left, avoiding Burt’s gaze.
“Kurt… can we talk about Blaine?”
Kurt sat bolt upright almost knocking Blaine, who was curled into him, off the bed. What was his dad doing back he wasn’t meant to be back until tomorrow evening, after Blaine had left.
