Tobias knocked on the door around five o'clock the following Wednesday, a week after they broke up. Darren answered it; Blaine was sat on the couch with his guitar, strumming softly. He hadn't composed for a while; he just needed to clear his head he always found that he was calmest when he played his music. He felt at peace, safe and happy. Blaine looked up when he heard Tobias enter, setting his guitar aside and standing up walking towards him slowly.
"Um ... hi" said Tobias somewhat nervously
"Hey..." Blaine said softly.
"Hey..." Said Tobias again, not really knows what else to say, incredibly conscious that Darren and Kelsey were watching.
"Hey, um didn't we have to do that thing?" Kelsey asked staring pointedly at Darren, he gave her a blank look. "In the bedroom?" she added
"Oooh yes Mmmm" He said when he finally cottoned on, and the pair of them left as to give Blaine and Tobias some privacy.
"Um... H-how, how've you been?" Blaine asked, trying to avoid Tobias' gaze, not wanting to risk getting lost in he's deep green eyes.
"Um Alright..." he bit his lip before adding, "I missed you"
"I missed you too" Blaine admitted.
"You did?" Tobias enquired, His voice sounding more hopeful than he wanted it to.
"Yeah...I mean... you hurt me... but yeah... I missed you" said Blaine, fiddling with his sleeve.
"You are adorable. Why are we breaking up again?" said Tobias, moving his head from side a little.
"Because you hit me and I still have feelings for Kurt... I'm sorry. And I know you'll find someone amazing... I'm just not him and I'm just really, really sorry... but we have to. This isn't fair to either of us" said Blaine nearly in tears again.
"Blaine, I get it... I was kidding... for the most part anyway, I mean I still think you're adorable... so, so adorable, but whatever that's not my point. I was a complete asshole the other night, and I let my temper get the better of me. I will regret that for the rest of my life because I ruined what we had... I ruined one of the best things to ever happen to me." Tobias said, holding his own and staying strong, his voice wavering slightly. "But I've been doing a lot of thinking over the past week. That's why I haven't been round... until now; obviously, I needed to clear my head. I kinda just didn't want it to be officially over, I thought, maybe, if I still had some of my stuff here it'd be like we were still together, but were just having a fight, you know. I thought the break up might feel less real... but I guess not. And I know I know it's my own fault that I feel this way and that we broke up. I should never have accused you of cheating and I get it, Kurt was your first and you never fully lose your feelings for your first love. I'm not going to pretend I'm not heartbroken that someone else owns your heart...I'm devastated... But sometimes two people need to fall apart to realise how much they need to fall back together..." said Tobias, slowly, it was as if he had rehearsed this. "And I truly believe that you and Kurt are meant to be... the way you look at each other is beautiful I know he must feel the same way about you."
Blaine was quite taken aback; he had tears in his eyes.
"But he's with Ryan. He's happy with Ryan. He is engaged to Ryan" Blaine said more for his own benefit than Tobias'. He sat down on the couch, running a hand through his hair. "I hurt him..."
"That may be but I see the way he looks at you, there is something there..." said Tobias "and that is part of what kills me the most. But I guess we weren't meant to be and that's okay, I'm grateful for the time that I have spent with you however brief... it is an honor that you trusted me with your heart even for a little while"
"Yeah... you were good for me, helped me a lot and actually, honestly you saved my life. You helped me through life after the assault and for that I am so very grateful. Even Kelsey and Darren said at the start that when I was with you I got better; and I know myself that I was, I was smiling and laughing again. And yeah you hurt me, I know you didn't mean to but you did and that knocked me back a few steps."
"I'm sorry Blaine..."
"I know you are T. but it still doesn't change the fact it happened, you are an amazing person and I know you'll find someone who is perfect for you."
"Yeah..." said Tobias, looking down thinking 'that someone is you' but not saying anything more; knowing it would only make this harder.
Blaine looked away slightly, feeling a little guilty. He moved over to the corner of the room and picked up Tobias' red gym bag containing the stuff he'd left at the apartment.
"Urm here's the things that you left here" said Blaine "Toothbrush, boxers, hoodies, clothes... things like that"
"Oh, yeah, um thanks" said Tobias, He picked up the gym bag and handed Blaine a small bag "Um, here's some boxers and a few DVD's and CD's you left at mine... we mainly stayed here, so there's not much."
"Thank you... um... yeah..."
"Yeah... I should probably go now. I'll see you around Bee"
"See You T...."
Tobias picked up has bag and turned to leave, looking back just as Blaine sat back down on the couch strumming his guitar, softly. His heart broke slightly, knowing that this was over; he walked out the door and slowly walked home, letting all the tears that he wouldn't let fall when he was with Blaine cascaded down his face.
~~~
Upon hearing the door close, Kelsey and Darren came out into the main living area to find Blaine playing his guitar softly, trying to keep himself from dissolving into tears. Kelsey walked over to Blaine sitting next to him, just listening to him play.
"Hey peanut..." She said "You okay?"
Blaine continued to play, losing himself in the music. Kelsey and Darren just sat waiting, knowing that when he wanted to talk then he would. After about half an hour he stopped and set his guitar aside. Tears slowly rolling down his cheeks, his head falling onto Kelsey's shoulder, she wrapped her arm around him. Darren left and entered the kitchen, giving them some time to talk, he knew Blaine needed this, Kelsey was better at the advice anyway.
"I still love him" he admitted.
"It will be okay honey" she cooed into his hair "it will get easier..."
"Will it?" Said Blaine "because all I see right now is hurt and pain... I don't deserve anyone. I hurt them all, I've just hurt Tobias, and I know he was a bit of an ass but I hurt him all the same. And above everything I hurt Kurt, the person I promised I would never hurt and now I'm watching him be happy and get married to someone else. And all I'm getting is my heart broken, and yeah I know it's my own fault I freaked out and that's no excuse for what i did and I see that now."
"I know honey... I know" said Kelsey "you could always say it'd be too much... Which it is"
"I promised..."
"Or you could tell him how you feel?"
"I can't do that to him..." said Blaine "He loves Ryan... if he knew, he wouldn't be able to see me again, he'd feel awkward... but then maybe that's for the best I'm not sure I could watch him in love with someone else, it'd break my heart... it is breaking my heart. Maybe I'll tell him after the wedding... when it can't change anything"
"I know Blaine; I wish I could make this better for you... I know this is killing you"
"Killing me isn't the half of it... its tearing me apart."
"I knowexcatly what you need" said Darren as he walked from the kitchen, when he returned he had a bottle of Tequila, three shot glasses, the salt shaker and several lime slices.
"Let's have a Kiki!" Kelsey shouted, getting a slight grin from Blaine.
"Lock the doors TIGHT" Blaine said.
"What's a Kiki?" said Darren, looking bamboozled
"A Kiki is a party for calming all your nerves" Blaine sang. We're spilling tea, and dishing just desserts one may deserve"
"And though the sun is rising, few may choose to leave So shade that lid and we'll all bid adieu to your ennui" Kelsey sang
"Okaayyy.... Well I was just going to say it's tequila time "said Darren, looking at Blaine and Kelsey who were grinning to themselves.
"Okay, sounds like a compromise..." said Blaine " one day we'll have a kiki"
"Okay. First things first, Phone!" Kelsey demanded holding her hand out to Blaine.
"Why?! I'm not going to do anything" he protested.
"The last thing you need is to drunkenly call Tobias... or worse Kurt" said Kelsey
"I won't..."
"Blaine" Darren said sternly... "We're doing this because we care..."
"Fiiiiinnnnneeeee" he said, handing his phone to Darren.
Darren went to put Blaine's phone in his friend's room and the three of them slammed back the tequila. After a few shots Blaine give up and started just drinking straight from the bottle. A few hours and several bottles of Liquor later, Blaine was dancing on the table, singing whilst Darren and Kelsey were doing body shots.
"CAUSE I AM BARELY BREATHING AND CAN'T FIND THE AIR I DON'T KNOW WHO I'M KIDDING IMAGINING YOU CARE" he sang into the almost empty vodka bottle dramatically.
"Blainey, Brainey, Blainey" Kelsey said, obviously very drunk "you must beed able to breathing o' else how coulded you sing"
"It's a song Kels Bells I no havta make sencicles!"
"You never make sencicles" She said pushing him slightly.
"Carefuls you'll maker me fall and hurter myself" He said as he downed the last of the vodka.
"Fiiine" she said and began making out with Darren.
"Ew gross guys" said Blaine taking a swig of his now empty bottle, tipping it upside down to make sure it had all gone "Ihm outta dwink. if youse gonna be kissy and stuffs ihms going to beds...."
Blaine's statement was met with an array of kissing noises emanating from his best friends as they exchanged saliva. He managed to get off the table without injuring himself, which was surprising given how much he'd drunk and how fast he felt the room was spinning. He began to stumble to his room only bumping into a few pieces of furniture before he made it to his room and fell onto his bed and promptly passed out.
~~~
The Next Morning
Blaine groaned as he woke up, head pounding, He looked bleary eyed around the room. He was trying to piece together bits of the night before when he felt a lurch from his belly, he promptly got up and sprinted to the bathroom and threw up violently. before settling himself next to the basin. He slowly rose from the floor and walked to the kitchen to put some coffee on. Kelsey and Darren were fast asleep on the couch, curled together; Blaine went to wake them but thought better of it, after all Darren could get grumpy when he got woken up. His phone blared, Kurt's name flashed up on the screen.
"Shit," he hissed and answered it "Hello" his voice hoarse
"Blaine! Where the hell are you" Kurt near shouted down the phone.
"Sorry I overslept, rough night. I'll be right there."
"What happened?"
"I'll explain later...We're meeting at the Bakeshop on Hudson Street right?"
"Yeah... Blaine you okay"
"Um, yeah... just a bit rough... I'll bring Coffee"
"Okay, See you in a little bit bee." Kurt said.
"Bye Kurt...sees you soon"
Blaine hung up and rushed around getting dressed, downing a few Advil and heading out the door. He picked up coffee from his and Kurt's favourite café, and made it to the Bakery in just under half an hour.
"Hi.." Blaine said, smiling a little at Kurt, handing him a coffee.
"Thanks." Kurt responded, smiling gratefully for the coffee cradling the cup in his hands.
Kurt looked at his best friend; his eyes were reddened as if he'd been crying. He figured Tobias must have come round last night, Kurt opened his arms. He knew his best friend needed him.
"Commere?" said Kurt, smiling at Blaine, Blaine walked slowly and fell into his friends arms "Blaine what happened last night?"
"Lets juts get your cake sorted out... we can talk about me later"
"yeah okay"
"Okay"
Blaine headed in to the cake shop as to avoidfurther conversation, Kurt in tow. They looked around the various cake designs, from traditional and plain, to extravagant cakes, there was simple floral designs to themed cakes. Kurt and Blaine sampled many flavours with various fillings, after sampling 6 cakes Blaine's hangover started to kick in and he began to feel nauseated again.
"Could I use your bathroom please?" he asked the baker
"Yeah... um it's just through there" she gestured to the back entrance.
"thanks"
Blaine bolted towards it, promptly throwing up in the pristine basin, what felt like the entire contents of his stomach. He sat there for about twenty minutes before there was a timid knock on the door.
"Bee are you okay?" he asked, softly.
"no..."
"can I come in?"
"no"
"Will you come out... please?"
"Not yet" said Blaine wiping his mouth.
He put the lid down and moving to sit on the on toilet, flushing it. He sat there for a moment, trying to construct how he was going to explain what happened to Kurt and the baker. He got up and walked outside, and he was met with Kurt's piercing blue eyes, looking ever so slightly worried.
"Bee..." said Kurt, examining Blaine's face closely, it was pale, his eyes bloodshot "What's wrong?"
"I'm just a bit hungover... sorry... it was no reflection on the cakes, they were beautiful. I rather liked the lemon sponge with a white chocolate cream," said Blaine, a small smile on his lips.
"Thank you," she smiled softly
"I liked that one too... could I put in an order for that, three tiered with a floral décor, like this "he pulled out a small sketch of a rather elaborate cake, with fondant roses of all size, in pastel pinks, yellows and oranges.
"Certainly sirs, it'll be $239, will you be paying by card"
"yeah, do you take Visa?"
"Yeah... I'll just get the card machine"
"Thanks" Kurt said. When she'd gone he turned to Blaine "Okay what's up? Its not like you to get so drunk you're ill the next day"
"It was just a bad night, and it was Darren's idea... We'll talk over lunch and an Alka-Seltzer"
"Okay..." he eyed his best friend suspiciously; it was really unlike Blaine to drink that much. The Baker returned with the card machine, and offered it to kurt.
"Enter your pin please, "She said, taking it back when Kurt had done so "You too make a cute couple, I'm sure you'll be very happy"
"Oh... we're not.... I'm not the groom.. I'm the best man"
"I'm so sorry" she said turning red "I just sense closeness with you two... um sorry, I hope I didn't offend"
"No... no you didn't, thank you... I look forward to seeing my cake" said Kurt, smiling.
"Um yes... when's the big day,?"
"August 21st"
"Okay I'll get it done, by then, will you collect it or will you want it delivering..."
"I'll get my other half to collect it" said Kurt with a smile, "thank you we better be going, still lots to do"
The two men left the bakery heading to the small café round the corner. Blaine planned exactly what he was going to say to Kurt how he was going to play the Break up. Kurt grew more concerned about his best friend; something seemed to be upsetting him. They sat down in a small corner both far from prying eyes and ordered their food. The waiter brought the drinks over.
"So" Kurt said, "What's wrong?"
"Tobias came over last night... Kinda made the break up official, gave him all his stuff back." Said Blaine looking down "it gave me a lot to think about... and he, he gave this big speech about how he still loved me and wanted me back but that we were doing the right thing and it kinda messed with my head a bit" Blaine continued, willing himself not to break down "said something that kinda rattled me... and then Dare and Kelsey suggested that we should drink... so we did... and I may have drunk too much.... I got rather worked up."
"Oh... I'm sorry about that Bee..."he reached across and stroked his friends arm "Break ups suck"
"They really do" said Blaine, smiling at the gesture, trying to ignore the fire he felt flare up as Kurt's flesh touched his, and the times that hand had caused him to lose control.
"How are you other than that though?" the other man enquired, sipping his diet coke.
"Um, I'm okay I guess... I'm playing again... composing even. And I have a meeting with some publishers on Monday."
"That's fantastic Bee" Kurt said as the food arrived.
"Yeah, its pretty exciting but also very nerve racking...I'm close to getting it published!"
"that's fantastic Bee..." said Kurt brimming with a bit more pride than was appropriate.
"Yeah... I'm happy that is going somewhere, but at the same time absolutely terrified"
"I'm sure It'll be great, Blaine. People loved your articles and NYJ. Ryan and I will be first in line to purchase it" said Kurt reaching across and stroking his best friends arm.
"Thanks Kurt" Blaine smiled, blushing slightly, but his stomach sank when her was reminded that he and Kurt would never be again.
The two men continued to laugh and talk it was like old times. Both felt happy and somewhat closer to one another... they embraced ad parted each one walking away their heads full of one another.
