A FAIRY TALE WITH A SHITTY ENDING.
by Blaine Anderson
Once upon a time, a prince did live. This young royal fellow stayed at home often, playing royal Call of Duty on his royal Xbox. Royally. Then one day, the king beckoned to the prince.
"Come hither, fine prince!" he decreed.
"Yes, father dearest?" the prince wondered.
"You, sir, like men, do you not?"
"Well...I....erm...rather -"
"Answer me when I speak to you, you foul cuss!"
"Affirmative, dear father. I am romantically interested in fellows."
"Listen here, you filthy and wretched cuss! Having said feelings for said individuals is a sin, set against nature by the imaginary aquaintance of most adolesents and adults alike, the mighty and powerful lord Jesus Christ!"
The prince stiffened.
"I am regretful. However, there is no action I can take to reverse this matter."
"A son who snogs fellows in no son of mine." With that the king turned and retreated back into his quarters. The prince fe-
"What are you writing?" Burt asked, and Blaine flipped his notebook closed a little too fast.
"Nothing," Blaine said, covering any trace of his sorrow with a flash of pearly white teeth.
"Are you sure?" Burt sat down on the floor next to him, and Blaine only flinched slightly.
"Positive."
"So then you wouldn't mind if took a look?" Blaine didn't know what Burt was getting to.
"I...uh..."
"Awesome." Burt picked the journal up from the ground and began to read.
Songs Kurt Should Never Stop Singing:
Burt flipped the page.
Hey, journal.
I think Kurt should realize what I gave up for him.
Burt was about to flip the page, but curiosity got the best of him.
I left my girlfriend for him, which, obviously that wasn't big, because I'm not even sure I ever like, liked her. I told Cooper. I mean, he didn't hate me for it, but he could have, and what then? He'd tell Dad, and Dad would disown me, and I'd have no dad and no brother. I just feel like he doesn't care.
Or, more likely than not, he's afraid. Afraid of the looks and the judgement and the harassment and abuse. I am too. But I feel like the kisses and smiles and whispers and the love, the love we already have, that's like an inside joke, but not funny, that should weigh out all the rest. It would for me.
It DOES for me. I mean, sure, we're not together-together, but I just love being around him. I love how I feel around him. I don't care if it's "wrong", or if it's "a sin", or whatever. Somebody makes me happy and that's enough for me and that should be enough for him.
"Blaine?"
"It was the girls!" Blaine answered immediately, taking the notebook from Burt's hand.
"Calm down, Blaine, I'm not going to feed you to sharks or anything," Burt chuckled.
They sat in silence for a moment, Burt pulling at the collar of his shirt and Blaine twirling a stray curl nervously around a finger.
"I saw you, you know," Burt said after a while.
Blaine paled. "Saw...saw me what?"
"I saw you two kissing."
The boy sighed and let his head fall into his hands. "I'm sorry," he said, though his speech was muffled.
"What are you sorry for?" Burt smiled.
"For...f-...in your car...and your -"
"Stop."
Blaine obliged, looking up silently.
"Do you love him?"
Blaine bit his lip and nodded softly.
"Does he know?"
Blaine continued nodding.
Burt sighed. "He's just confused, Blaine."
Blaine laughed derisively. "Yeah, he seems pretty confused. He seems really confused when he flirts with me, and when he tells the girls he loves me. He's scared, not confused."
"And he has every right to be."
The two looked up at the voice.
"You guys are really fucking loud," Chloe snorted, and Winter snickered behind her. But their faces melted into smiles as they flanked Blaine.
"He's going through a lot, you know," Winter sighed.
"I know, I'm going through the same thing!" He let his head fall back into his hands. Burt quietly excused humself and went to find Kurt and Finn.
The girls sighed collectively and patted Blaine on his shoulders. "I feel really bad," Chloe admitted empathetically.
"Yeah, I mean, we just want to see you guys happy," Winter added.
"I could be happy," Blaine said, looking up. The tears in his eyes were hard to miss, and they glistened in the artificial lights of the hotel room. "I could be happy if he would just stop being so fucking scared." His voice wasn't angry, though. It was more tired than anything.
"I know," Chloe cooed, pressing a kiss into his hair. "And he will. Just give him a little while."
She stood up and left, then, leaving Blaine and Winter slouched against the wall.
"He loves you a lot," Winter said. "There's no denying that. But he's fighting himself."
"He shouldn't do that," Blaine said absentmindedly. "He should never fight himself."
"I know. But he is. You just have to jump in their and win. Win his heart."
Blaine smiled and Winter stoodup to walk away. "Wait!" Blaine called.
"Hmm?" She half-turned, so she could see him, but her toes were still to the door.
"Thank you. You guys are awesome. I can't imagine being without you."
Winter grinned. "Whatever you need, BB."
Kurt remembered a time when he was sad almost constantly. He was eight. His mother had just died. The only thing that had made him better then was Blaine.
They met in kindergarten. Blaine was the only other boy who didn't like playing in the mud, because that was really gross. They became instant friends. Blaine was the only person in the world who could make Kurt smile by just being there. It was ironic that now he was the reason Kurt cried himself to sleep at night.
Well, no, it wasn't Blaine, exactly. It was himself. It was how much he hated himself for loving Blaine. He didn't know why he hated it, though, because he loved the feeling, loved how Blaine's laugh made his insides warm and how Blaine's kisses melted him. He just wished everyone else thought that was okay.
He was torn from his thought by a knock on his door.
"It's open unless you're Blaine. If you're Blaine, I'm still mad at you." Which was true.
"It's me." Chloe's voice drifted through the room, and he heard the door click open, and felt his matress depress as she sat down next to him.
"Hey." He turned to face her, looking absolutely broken.
"You okay?"
"Not really. I haven't been for a while."
She smiled sadly. "I have my guitar," she shrugged.
"And you're alone?"
She nodded.
"Do you want to sing with me?"
Chloe grinned. "I always want to sing with you."
"Perfect," Kurt smiled, and Chloe began to strum her guitar.
"Want me to start?" she asked.
He nodded.
"Okay." She played a few chords, and then, "True friends lie underneath,
The witty words I don't believe,
I can't believe a damn thing they say anymore."
She looked at him expectantly, but he just shrugged. She continued to sing.
"Oh lie, lie, liar,
Liar you'll pay for your sins."
Kurt joined her, but she was too focused on singing and guitar to notice.
"So tell me, how does it feel,
How does it feel to be like you?
I think your mouth should be quiet,
'Cause it never tells the truth now."
Chloe stopped singing and smirked, but Kurt continued.
"So TELL me, so tell me why,
Why does it have to be this way?
Why can't things ever change?"
"Come down!" Chloe sang.
"Come down from your tower!" Kurt replied, smiling through tears that blurred his vision.
"COMMME down!"
"Come down from your towwerr."
And then, Chloe set her guitar down and they flopped onto their backs, singing "Come down, come down from your tower" in unison.
They looked up at the ceiling, comfortably silent.
"How does that never fail to make me feel better?" Kurt asked, grinning.
"Must be the perfect harmony."
Must be," he laughed.
"So listen." She turned on her side so she was facing him, and he turned toward her as well.
"Yes?"
"Blaine."
Kurt hated that the one syllable sent shivers down his spine and heat up his neck. "What about Blaine?"
"You love him." It wasn't a question.
"Yes."
"He loves you."
Kurt bit his lip. "Yes."
Chloe looked him in the eyes. "So what the hell?!"
Despite himself, Kurt chuckled.
That eared a slap from Chloe. "I'm not playing aroung, Kurt! There's a great guy who loves you in that next room, and you're sitting here singing Scene Five with me when you could be...romancing, I don't know, whatever!"
"It's more complicated than that."
"Bull shit! Love isn't complicated, Kurt. Love is the only simple thing there is."
"Are you a Hallmark greeting card, or what?"
Chloe snorted. "I'm a friend, Kurt. A best friend. One who loves you and wants to see you get what you deserve." She paused. "That sounded like something a serial killer would say." They laughed. "Just, please, try?"
"I will," Kurt agreed. "Just not today."
"Fine. But soon." Chloe stood up. "I'm gonna go start packing. Tell your dad everyone's ready but us."
"As usual," Kurt smiled, and they hugged quickly before Chloe retreated into the girls' room.
