Upon hearing that Karofsky had transferred Blaine felt hopeful, not just because he knew he could once again go through the day without get bruised but also with Karofsky gone so was Kurt’s excuse for them not to be together. He spent the whole day expecting Kurt to say something to him, to do something, to be waiting at his locker or to kiss him at lunch or something to show Blaine that Kurt wanted to be with him but nothing. No notes, no kisses, no professions of love, nothing. Did this mean what Blaine thought it meant? Did Kurt not want to be with him? Was he not good enough?
Blaine shook his head to try and clear it of those thoughts; maybe Kurt was waiting until after so they could be alone and make out for hours once they got back together. Blaine checked that his breath was minty fresh, just in case. The longer Blaine waited the more scenarios he came up with ranging from Kurt showing up and playing a romantic song outside of Blaine’s window à la Say Anything to Kurt trying to call or text Blaine but Blaine’s phone died, he quickly checked it and saw that the battery was still pretty full and the ringer was on high. By dinner time he was pretty sure Kurt wasn’t going to come by and try to woo him but he still had hope, by the time he went to bed he had given up all hope.
The next day at school he didn’t try to avoid Kurt but was beginning to wonder if Kurt was avoiding him, he had seen glimpse of him in the hall so he knew he wasn’t out sick. Later when Rachel asked him where he wanted to eat lunch as the group was torn between in the cafeteria and outside he told her that he was just going to each lunch in the library, explaining that Kurt obviously didn’t want to see him so he didn’t want to make lunch awkward for anyone and he asked her to let Kurt know if would be safe for him to eat lunch with the group. She tried to assure him that wasn’t the case but Blaine knew that she was just trying to be nice.
He was feeling a little down as he walked down the outside staircase to get to the library; he caught his breath when he saw Kurt turning the corner with a big smile on his face. Blaine was sure that meant Kurt hadn’t seen him yet and once he did the smile would disappear but Kurt came bounding up to Blaine.
“Karofsky transferred.” Kurt said.
“I heard….yesterday.”
“I would’ve come and talked to you yesterday but I couldn’t think of the right way to do it.”
“It’s ok Kurt, I understand. You don’t want me; you don’t need to say it.”
“What? No. Blaine. No.”
“No?”
“Shit. I screwed this up. These are for you.” Kurt said producing a bouquet of red and yellow roses from behind his back.
“You got me flowers?”
“I can’t do the big gesture things like you can, I can’t put myself out there like that, let myself be vulnerable like that, this is what I can do. I can do the small gestures like buy flowers.”
“This is perfect Kurt.” Blaine beamed before leaning in to give Kurt a kiss on the cheek.
“Oh good! I was so nervous.”
“Well there was no need.”
“So Blaine, care to tell me about that new deal you and Karofsky had?”
“Don’t be mad?”
“I can’t promise but I’ll try.”
“Ok, I traded my safety for yours. I told him he could push me in lockers, dump slushies on me whatever he would normally do to you and I wouldn’t say anything as long as he left you alone.” Blaine explained biting his lip, worried about his reaction.
“Oh baby. You did all that for me? You put yourself through that for me?”
“I couldn’t stand the thought of him hurting you.”
“But you had already been through so much what with camp and all.”
“I know, but Kurt I would do anything to protect you. I love you.” Blaine said hoping it wasn’t too soon to say that, hoping he didn’t scare Kurt off.
“I love you too.” Kurt replied.
Blaine looked around to make sure no one was watching and then leaned forward and gave Kurt a small, sweet kiss.
“Now come on, I want to have lunch with my boyfriend and our friends.” Kurt said grabbing Blaine’s hand and leading the way to where the rest of the New Directions were sitting, who upon seeing the two boys holding hands and smiling let out a big cheer.
