Blaine Anderson and Kurt Hummel had been attending the same schools all their lives, Blaine was a year younger but he skipped a grade so that he and Kurt were in a lot of the same classes. Despite this the two boys didn’t pay much attention to another, they were aware of each other and when they saw watch other outside of school they would smile in recognition but that was pretty much it. They didn’t have much in common, Kurt craved the spotlight joining Glee club and for a brief time Cheerios whereas Blaine spent all his time in the library, he loved to sing but he was too shy to join the glee club. Kurt had a flare for fashion and liked to make a statement with his outfits, Blaine wore whatever his mom bought him when she happened to be shopping or his older brother’s hand-me-downs, which meant that most of his clothes didn’t actually fit him. Blaine’s family had the money for him to buy new clothes but he just didn’t care about fashion all that much so it seemed like a waste of money. Blaine wore thick coke bottle glasses that made the ones Artie wore almost look fashionable and caked his hair in gel, in short Blaine was a nerd and he was proud of it.

Neither boy expected to find romance in Lima Ohio and they certainly didn’t expect to find it with each other but then one day Kurt’s father had a heart attack and Kurt sang I Want to Hold Your Hand in glee club. Blaine happened to be walking by and heard Kurt singing, he stopped and listened mesmerized by the taller boy’s voice.  As he listened he realised something he was in love with Kurt Hummel.  Too bad Kurt barely knew who he was.

Blaine spent the next few days staring at Kurt whenever he could and doodling Kurt + Blaine in his notebook. He felt ridiculous, Kurt was just a boy not all that different than Blaine himself, Blaine should just be able to go up and talk to him, and then ask him out and Kurt would say yes and then they’d get married have lots of babies, beautiful babies, with Kurt’s eyes and Blaine’s smile. It didn’t matter to Blaine that was impossible, it was going to happen he knew it; all he had to do was go say “Hi” to Kurt.  Ok, he was going to do that right now. He crossed the cafeteria to where Kurt sat while his friends grabbed their lunches. Blaine took a deep breath and began to approach Kurt. He was so close, this was going to happen. But before Blaine reached Kurt he was joined by the rest of the glee club and there was no way Blaine could talk to Kurt in front of all those people, so he changed his course and went outside instead. That became Blaine’s routine for months, there were times he almost was able to say hi before someone came up, one time he could’ve spoken to Kurt but he forgot how to talk and ended up nearly running out of the room hoping that Kurt hadn’t noticed him but of course why would he have? Nobody ever notices Blaine.

Eventually Blaine realised that this was probably for the best that he couldn’t talk to Kurt as there’s no way in hell Kurt would ever want him. Blaine was the kind of guy who did math problems for fun whereas Kurt had actual fun hanging out with his friends, something that Blaine always wondered what would be like; no there’s no way Kurt would be into a friendless nerd like Blaine.

In math class the next period his teacher asked him to stay behind, Blaine gulped and racked his brain to figure out what he could’ve done to have to stay behind, he was ahead in his homework, he got 100% on the last test, he never spoke to anyone during class, or anytime really, so he couldn’t be in trouble right?

“Now Blaine, you are probably wondering why I asked you to stay behind.” His math teacher Mr. Alberts said once class ended.

“Yes sir.” Blaine replied meekly his stomach turning with nervousness.

“Well, I need to ask you a favour Blaine.”

                “Ok.”

“A student in one of my other classes is having trouble and I would like you to tutor him.”

“Oh. Uh. I suppose I could do that.”

                “Good. I’ll let him now.”

“Sir? Who will I be tutoring?”

                “Finn Hudson.”
