Sorry this took a while, I had chapters 9 & 10 written but decided I hated them, so here's the new and improved chapter 9!
As much as Kurt loved performing he was so incredibly happy to finally have a week off, sure they got days off but those were usually spent travelling to the next city but finally having a week off meant that he could go to Lima and see his dad. Of course his dad asked if he was sure that’s how he wanted to spend his week off, saying he would understand if Kurt would rather spend it in New York. But Kurt reassured his dad he wanted to spend it with him and Carole, besides he couldn’t spend it in New York even if he wanted as some strange guy was renting his room, sleeping in his bed…and oh god! What if he was touching Kurt’s clothes? He was tempted to go to New York just to make sure that wasn’t happening but where would he sleep? The couch is fine for a nap but just barely, Rachel hogs all the blankets and Santana kicks and he couldn’t just kick the guy out of his room…could he? No, he couldn’t he was renting Kurt’s room fair and square and while Kurt wasn’t entirely happy with the idea he understood why it was necessary.
While Carole was working her shift at the hospital and his dad went to check on the shop Kurt decided to satisfy his craving for a mocha from the Lima Bean. Honestly, the coffee at the Lima Bean wasn’t as good as that from Starbucks or the coffee shop down the street from his loft. They used thicker cups that tasted a little like cardboard, the coffee tasted a little burnt, the mocha was a bit too sweet, overall it should be nasty, it should be the kind of drink you take one sip of and then throw away but there weren’t really any other options in Lima so the people there got used to it and eventually addicted to it. Kurt craved it when he was in New York, he even tried to make his own mochas at home but he couldn’t quite get them right. He walked in the door of the coffee shop and was overcome with the feeling he was late, that he should’ve been there ten minutes sooner to meet someone but it was too late now, they had come and gone. He shook his head an brushed the feeling off as being a remnant from when he used to meet his friends here in high school.
The ten minutes late feeling hit him again when he stopped by his dad’s shop to say hi to the guys and to see if his dad wanted any help, it might have been awhile since he last worked on a car but Kurt was sure he could still rebuild a carburetor faster than anyone else. He figured he must have once again imagined the feeling as if one of his friends was in town and stopped by the shop his dad would have told him so he once again shrugged off the feeling as he slipped into his old pair of coveralls and went to work on the BMW that his dad told him was ‘making a strange pinging sound’ according to the guy who brought it in, apparently the guy was very embarrassed he couldn’t tell Burt more but it’s his mom’s car and he’s just in town for her birthday so he hadn’t actually heard the ‘strange pining sound’ but his mom assured him that it does make one. The pinging noise took Kurt all day to find and fix but eventually the car was as good as new, probably better. After he was finished with the car Kurt left so he could shower and get started on dinner, he wanted to have it ready for when his dad and step-mom got home from their jobs. Burt was going to call the owners of the BMW to come get it and then finish up some paperwork before heading home.
“That kid with the beamer wanted me to thank you for him.” Burt said as the family sat down to eat the baked salmon Kurt had made for dinner. “Nice guy that kid, I think you’d really like him.”
Kurt dropped his fork and glared at his father.
“Not tryin’ to set you just statin’ a fact.” Burt defended himself.
“Right.”
“I don’t see what’s wrong with going out on a few dates anyhow, your mom wasn’t my first girlfriend ya know. Nothing wrong with dating until you find your soul mate.”
“First of all, I don’t even know if I have a soul mate…” Kurt started but was interrupted by his father who told him. “You’ve got a soul mate.”
“And second of all,” Kurt continued as if Burt hadn’t spoken. “I do date.”
Burt and Carole exchanged skeptical looks.
“I do!” Kurt insisted. “Ok, maybe I haven’t been on a date in a while but it’s kind of hard to date when you’re in a traveling production. “
“And before that you didn’t go on many date because you were too busy between NYADA and Vogue.com to meet someone.”
“I did date at NYADA! I dated Adam for like two weeks!”
“Right and that was almost a year ago.”
“You should be happy I’m not throwing myself around dad.”
“I am but I also worry that you are keeping yourself closed off, not letting anyone in so you can’t lose them.”
Kurt chewed his lip.
“You’ve lost more than your fair share kid, we all have but that doesn’t mean your brick up your heart, that’s no way to live.”
“I know and I promise when I find the right guy, whether he’s my soul mate or not I’ll let him in. But I don’t want to be set up I’ll find him on my own, ok?”
“Ok. I just want you to be happy.”
“I am happy, I love getting up on stage every night and playing such an incredible role, I adore my cast mates, and when I go back to New York I have my dream school and my dream internship waiting for me. Yes having love too would be amazing but I’m not one of those people who pins everything on it. I’m fine without it for now.”
