Blaine tapped his fingers on his desk, he didn't have any toys he could go talk to Kurt about therefore he didn't have a reason to go see the other man. Kurt's desk was between Blaine's and the bathroom but there was only so many bathroom trips he could take before it started to look like he was having stomach issues and he didn't want Kurt thinking that about him besides walking past Kurt wasn't nearly as good as talking to him. He sighed as his phone rang, he'd have to think of an excuse to stop by Kurt's desk later.
"Product testing Blaine speaking." He answered his phone.
"Hey, it's Kurt are you busy?"
"Not at all." Blaine said feeling his mood brighten considerably.
"Do you like the other people in your department or is it ok for me to bitch about them to you?"
"Bitch away."
"Ok so you know Steve?"
Blaine made a noise that let Kurt know that not only did he know Steve but he couldn't stand him.
"Is this about him being a slacker or a homophobe?" Blaine asked.
"Slacker....he's a homophobe?"
"Yeah, he's never actually done anything that I can file a complaint with HR about he just sneers when I get too close to him or uses hand sanitizer if he touches something I touched, little things like that."
"Fucking asshole! Him not you."
"I knew what you were saying, but that's not what you were calling to talk about."
"No it wasn't but that seems more important."
"Don't worry I can handle him, now what was it you wanted to bitch about?"
"Ok, so he was testing 824-4D for me right? And he sends me his email report and I swear to god all it said was 'I didn't like it.' Nothing about why he didn't like it or if it would stand up to regular play or anything. Like fuck, what am I supposed to do with 'I didn't like it.'?"
"First of all, you are seeing other product testers? I'm hurt Kurt."
"Don't worry you are by far my favorite."
"You're my favorite too."
"Yay."
"And second of all, send me the prototype and I'll have a look."
"You don't have to do that."
"I know but it will help you out so I want to do it."
"Thank you. I owe you one."
"Ah just buy me a coffee some time and we'll call it even." As soon as the words left Blaine's mouth he realized he was pretty much asking Kurt out and his heart felt like it was going to beat out of his chest.
"O-Ok....I can do that." Kurt said biting his lip; did Blaine just ask him out?
"Great! So yeah just drop it by and I'll look at it tonight."
"Ok. I'll see you in a little bit."
"Awesome."
Blaine hung up and quickly checked his reflection in a small mirror he kept in his desk and grabbed a mint before quickly making sure he didn't have B.O. (he didn't), it was all part of his little ritual before seeing Kurt who always looked like he just stepped out of the pages of a fashion magazine and smelled like an ad for very good very expensive cologne.
He heard knocking on the wall of his cubicle and turned to see Kurt standing there.
"Hi."
"Hi, so here it is."
"Oh! It's a teddy bear! How could anyone not like a teddy bear?" Blaine said reaching out taking the bear and then playing with its little bow tie.
"Right?"
Blaine squeezed the bear in a tight hug. I love you!
"Oh my god it talks!" He exclaimed hugging it again. You are my best friend!
Kurt couldn't help the small laugh that escaped his lips. "You'd think you never saw a talking bear before."
"Shut up! I like my job, ok?"
"I can tell and I think it's adorable."
Blain's face lit up in a huge smile.
"So, I'm worried about the buttons....like do you think a kid could pull them off and choke on one of them?" Kurt said changing the topic.
Blaine pulled on one of the buttons of the bear's cardigan. "I don't think so; they seem to be sewn on really well."
"Good."
"I'll have a full report for you in the morning ok?"
"Ok, and you're sure you don't mind?"
"Not at all that's what friends do...we are friends right?"
"Of course we are."
"What's this?" Kurt asked picking up a toy off Blaine's desk.
"917-3A....I'm not exactly sure what it's supposed to do but I do know it doesn't do it."
Kurt turned it over in his hands and tried to get it to do something.
"Who designed it?"
"The new girl....Jane? Jean?"
"Jenny."
"Yeah, her...I thought maybe she forgot to put batteries in it but I can't find where they would go."
"I honestly don't know what to tell you." Kurt said handing it to Blaine.
"This is why I don't like working with the other designers."
"Why Mr. Anderson, are you asking me to be your exclusive designer?"
"God yes! Do you think that would be allowed?"
"I'm not sure...I mean let's face it we are both the best in our departments. Let me make a few inquiries."
"Ok."
"I should probably go back to my desk." Kurt said making no effort to actually leave.
"If you have to."
Kurt picked the mystery object back off of Blaine's desk.
"Maybe this is just the container? You know like how silly putty comes in an egg."
"Maybe...but I don't see where it would open."
Kurt lifted the hand holding it up and then raised his eyebrows in question at Blaine who shrugged his shoulders in a "why not?" sort of way. Kurt let the object go both men watching it fall to the floor but nothing happened.
"Well it passes the durability test." Blaine remarked.
Kurt hummed in agreement.
"I kinda think it's a paperweight but that doesn't make sense for a toy company." Kurt said as he turned it over in his hands again.
"Maybe she's making a My First Office play set."
"How very tragic."
"Working in an office isn't so bad."
"No, no it's not."
On his way home Blaine got a few odd looks on the subway but that was to be expected considering the fact he was a 25 year old man with a teddy bear on his lap but he really didn't care as he was too busy trying to figure out if he did in fact ask Kurt out for coffee and if so was it a date? And when and where were they going to go?
"Hey who made you the Blainey bear?" Cooper asked when Blaine arrived at the apartment they share.
"It's not a Blainey bear."
"Looks like you."
"It does not!" Blaine protested.
"If I were to take a photo of it and put it on Facebook everyone would say 'Oh what a cute Blainey bear.'"
"You can't do that! You know you can post photos of prototypes on social media sites! I could get fired!"
"Calm down, I didn't say I was going to do it, I just said if I did. Just look at it bushy eyebrows, bowtie, cardigan....you have that cardigan."
"I do not....mine has thicker strips."
Cooper gave Blaine a look that said are you kidding me?
