Blaine wanted the dinner to be perfect, he went to the store and bought every candle he could find so that his apartment resembled the stage when Kurt was practicing The Music of the Night, Blaine smiled as he remembered lighting every one of those candles. The salmon was in the oven, perfectly timed so that as soon as Kurt arrived Blaine could just take it out, garnish it and serve it. He hoped that Kurt would like it, he hadn’t actually made it before he had googled romantic recipes and looked through them until he found one that looked like it would be both romantic and healthy and that he actually had the skills to make it. He looked around the apartment one last time to make sure everything was perfect when he heard Kurt knock on the front door.
He opened the door to let his date in; he couldn’t call him his boyfriend quite yet could he? Kurt was dressed in his usual skin tight jeans, with a white button up shirt that he left the last two buttons open on and a black vest, it was a relatively simple outfit for Kurt but he looked gorgeous in it and it made Blaine catch his breath. He smiled at Blaine and without saying a word he pulled a bouquet of yellow and red roses from behind his back, the same kind that he had given Blaine to celebrate him getting the role of Tony back at McKinley.
“Hi.” Kurt breathed
“Hi, you look great.”
“Thanks so do you. These are for you.”
“They’re amazing Kurt, they’ll make a great centerpiece. Thank you.” Blaine gave Kurt a small peck on the cheek.
“Dinner smells great, what is it?”
“Salsa-roasted Salmon.”
“Oh, that sounds good.”
“I hope so, if you hate it let me know and we’ll order Chinese or something ok?”
“I’m sure I won’t hate it.”
“Just promise ok?”
“I promise.”
“I wish I had wine but the guy at the liquor store didn’t believe my fake id so I had to settle for sparkling cider.”
“That’s fine; I don’t think I could handle any more alcohol this weekend anyhow.”
Blaine laughed “Yeah I hear that.”
“That’s a lot of candles.” Kurt said looking around the room.
“Yeah, are they too much?” Blaine said rubbing the back of his neck.
“No they’re great, very romantic.”
“Good, that’s what I was aiming for. Have a seat, dinner’s pretty much ready.”
Kurt sat down and Blaine poured him a glass of sparkling cider.
“Is there anything I can do?”
“Umm…you can put the flowers in a vase for me.”
“On it, where’s the vase?”
Blaine pointed to right cupboard. As Kurt prepared the vase for the flowers Blaine finished preparing the dinner.
The two ate enjoying both the company and the food.
“I’ve been meaning to ask, how are your dad and Carole?”
“They’re doing really well, they say hi by the way.”
“So they know about us?”
Kurt nodded, “Should I not have told them?”
“Oh no, I’m glad you did. It makes it more real. And they’re ok with it?”
“My dad cheered Blaine, he actually cheered.”
Blaine smiled.
“Tell them I said hi back, I miss them.”
“They miss you too.”
“How’s Cooper?”
“He’s Cooper convinced that every audition will be his big break and telling me that I’m wasting my talent being here and taking psych. He wanted me to go to school in California; I think he had plans for us to be this incredibly famous brother act.”
“Good call on coming to New York. I don’t think there is much call for a dueling Simon Le Bon impressions act.”
Blaine laughed. “Don’t tell Copper that you’d break his heart.”
“And how are thing with your parents? They must be better if they bought you this place and pay for your education.”
“Yeah things are better; we did some family counselling for a while and got some things out in the open. It turns out they don’t have a problem with me being gay they had a problem with me being gay in Ohio; they were worried for my safety. They said that Sadie Hawkins nearly killed them too and then when I took up boxing they were partly relieved but partly terrified I would get myself killed trying to fight back, and I said I rather die fighting than just lying there taking it.”
“So they aren’t homophobic assholes after all?”
“Apparently not, but then I haven’t tested that theory but actually acting on my sexuality since finding that out, so I guess we’ll find out together.”
“Have you spoken with any of the New Directions lately?”
“Umm…yeah I speak to Mike, did you know he and Tina are engaged now?”
“I did, I’m so glad they got back together.”
“Me too, let’s see who else…I talked to Sam, he’s been dating a lot of different girls but I think he’s never gotten over Mercedes.”
“She’s never gotten over him either; I don’t know why they can’t work it out.”
“I think they’re fine when they live in the same town but it’s when they’re apart long distance kills them.”
“Well long distance is a bitch.”
“Something we both know too well.”
They ate in silence for a minute.
“Save room for desert, it’s cheesecake.”
Kurt looked torn, on one hand the dinner was pretty amazing but on the other hand it’s cheesecake.
“We can always save the cheesecake for later.”
“Later? Blaine Anderson are you planning on seducing me?”
“Umm…I was planning on watching a movie but if that’s an option, then yes.”
“Let’s watch the movie and see what happens…umm…I haven’t been with anyone else either.”
“That’s good, for me I mean. I like knowing that no one else has ever touched you like that, seen you like that.”
“I know, I like knowing that about you too.”
The two boys stared at each other both knowing that they wouldn’t get far into the movie but neither feeling quite bold enough to suggest that they just forego the movie altogether.
