In a moment of desperation and, later admitted, weakness, Kurt had run out into the storm, chasing after Blaine, begging him not to do it. Kurt had pleaded with Blaine to take back his "I can't do this anymore." But Blaine only pulled himself from Kurt's grasp, hurried into his car, and took off into the stormy night.
Kurt stood planted in the same muddy spot, focused only down the road where Blaine had turned away from him, from them. He wasn't sure how long he'd been out there before he saw a pair of headlights come back towards the way Blaine had vanished. He wasn't even sure he had it in him to hope. He just stood there holding himself around his middle, one hand pressed over his heart. He was afraid of what would happen if he tried moving more than the ragged expansion and deflation of his chest.
The car pulled into Kurt's driveway and Kurt could tell immediately that it wasn't Blaine. Blaine's car was black; this one was red.
The driver's side door opened and a brunette slightly smaller than Blaine emerged and hurried towards him.
"Kurt! Kurt!" Rachel shouted, "What are you doing out here?"
Kurt didn't answer. He barely even flicked his eyes at her to acknowledge that the girl was there.
"You need to get inside Kurt," Rachel said as she grabbed hold of Kurt's rain soaked shirt attempting to pull him towards his front door.
Kurt registered Rachel tugging his shirt, but refused to obey her wishes. That was until she nearly knocked him over.
"What are you doing here Rachel?" he asked turning back to his previous position.
"He called me," Rachel said, "He told me what happened. He said you might need me."
There was only one possible 'he' Rachel could have been referring to. His Dad and Carole were out of town for the weekend and Finn was away with Puck.
"How kind of him," Kurt muttered sarcastically as the anger he unknowingly had adopted while she stood in the middle of a thunderstorm drenched his words as the rain drenched his skin.
"Let's go inside Kurt," Rachel pleaded.
Kurt didn't budge.
"Kurt Elizabeth Hummel! Get your ass in the house before I carry you in there!" Rachel shouted
Reluctantly, Kurt gave in and followed her inside.
Once Kurt was dry and changed he joined Rachel on his bed, sitting beside her without staying a word. He just looked forward. It was easier that way. If he concentrated on something, on anything that wasn't the last ninety minutes of his life, he was okay. But as Rachel set her hand on top of his as it sat on his thigh, I wasn't as easy. The moment Rachel's warmth hit him, the cold inside him grew and it was harder to get push away everything that had happened.
He sniffled, but wasn't crying. He'd stopped crying sometime in the front yard. He wasn't sure when because eventually it was hard to tell the difference between the tears and the rain. His fingers curled around Rachel's because despite the fact that he wanted to crawl into a hole and never come out, somewhere inside him he knew that he needed this lifeline, and he was grateful for it. Blaine Anderson was not going to get the best of him.
Starting tomorrow.
Taking a deep breath, Kurt slid down the bed to rest his head on Rachel's shoulder. It wasn't more than a moment before he gave into the feelings that were clawing inside him and broke down. He sobbed as Rachel wrapped her arms around him, holding him as he let himself feel the hurt, running her fingers through his damp hair in an attempt to soothe him.
Kurt never told Rachel exactly what had happened that night. She knew nothing other than that Blaine had broken up with him and left him in the rain. And after a few days, when Kurt finally pulled himself out of his heart broken stupor, no one made mention of the night again.
And neither of them would see Blaine Anderson for along time after that.
