“How are you this amazing?” Kurt asked, laughing a little.
“Amazing?” Blaine asked, “How are you this incredible?”
Kurt giggled, showing his teeth.
“I think visiting hours are ending,” Blaine said, turning to look at the hallway.
“Okay,” Kurt said sadly.
“I’ll be back in the morning, promise,” Blaine said, “And please, try not to fall back into another coma?” he joked.
“I’ll try,” Kurt said. Blaine began to walk out when Kurt asked, “Did you? Did you play music for me when I was in my coma?”
Blaine turned his head around, smiled, and slipped out the door.
Kurt turned his head back to the window, admiring the stars again. Only moments later Blaine would be doing the same thing from the inside of a taxi.
---
Kurt could feel a finger brush his bangs back. He instantly knew it was Blaine’s touch. He opened his eyes to find Blaine, standing next to him, wearing a light smile. Kurt felt his heart race, and realized he could hear it too, as the heart monitor’s beep quickened. His face turned pink.
Blaine giggled. “Hey, don’t be embarrassed. I actually have come to like the reminder that your heart is still beating.” Blane walked to the wall, grabbing himself a chair.
“Blaine, when we-” Kurt swallowed, “Will you tell me what happened? I mean I only remember bits and pieces.”
Blaine stopped, his back was turned to Kurt and he was slightly bent over, holding the chair in air.
“You don’t-never mind,” Kurt said, waving his hand in the air.
“No, no. It’s fine,” Blaine said, he turned and walked the chair over, gracefully setting it down and sitting in it. Kurt thought about how Blaine was the only person who could move a chair awkwardly and still look stunning and gentlemanly doing it.
Blaine crossed his legs and reached for Kurt’s hand. To him, holding his boyfriend’s hand was like breathing. It had become so common, so familiar, he just reached for it without thinking.
Blaine breathed, using his own advice, telling himself to have courage.
Blaine told Kurt about that day. Every feeling, every fear, every thought. All the while knowing exactly what he was doing. Knowing that he was completely opening himself up to this boy.
Tears fell and hands were squeezed. Eyes and hearts were heavy.
Kurt did remember most of what had happened. Up until he blacked out, until he was sucked away from his life, leaving Blaine. Blaine explained how he had spent the time feeling for Kurt’s heartbeat, the fainting feeling he felt, the running, the sleeping on a sidewalk, how his sanity had been a cellphone after the seizure. All the while Kurt listened, his eyes soft and understanding.
“Please, never leave me again, Kurt,” Blaine said, his head now down, staring at his knees.
“Blaine, look at me,” Blaine looked up.
“I will never leave you. And if by some means we have to part, I promise you this: I promise you that I love you, everything about you, everything that makes you, well, Blaine and that the last thing I would ever want is to hurt you or to leave you. But Blaine, if by some shift in the universe, we become separated, you need to know that your life can’t just end because I’m gone. I want you to be happy no matter what happens.” Kurt fought back his tears.
“But i don’t know how to go with my life without you in it.” Blaine said, his eyes sadder than Kurt had ever seen them.
“Well, I’m not going anywhere, Blaine,” Kurt said, but he thought about what he had said to Blaine and couldn’t help wondering if he could go on if Blaine left him. If Blaine just wasn’t there anymore. It was then that both of them realized that this wasn’t just coffee dates, flirty duets, and “I love you”s, it was so much more than that.
“Well,” Kurt said, releasing Blaine’s hand and wiping away his own tears.
“Well,” Blaine repeated, staring at Kurt.
“I wanna go on a date, It’s been so long since I’ve been out of this hospital,” Kurt let out.
“Well, I already have our next date planned,” Blaine said mischievously. Kurt tilted his head, his mood now so much happier.
“You do?” He asked.
“I do!” Blaine switched his crossed legs and reached for the remote, ready to change the subject.
