Even though Kurt didn't want anything to do with the Hunger Games, he sucked it up and reminded himself he needed to be social with more people in the Capitol. He stuck out like a sore thumb enough as it is.
Kurt didn't understand how the Capitol thought it was the right thing to do. Children battling to the death until one victor is left standing alone. Although Kurt was shocked to hear that there were two victors last year instead of one. Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, who just so happened to be star crossed lovers both from District 12.
Kurt found it romantic.
Cinna stood out from the 24 different designers. He didn't hav colored hair, colorful clothing, and the only makeup he wore was faint golden eyeliner. And above all, he was most polite rather than the type to gossip constantly.
"Never in my years have I seen a designer with an Avox. You must be Capitol-Favorite," said Patricia, District 5's designer for the male tribute.
'Capitol-Favorite' was slang term for being someone who was pick to be favored by Capitol officials such as President Snow. It wasn't something to be so proud of. It was basically like slapping your popularity in other's faces.
Kurt couldn't help it as he looked up at Blaine, who stood beside the chair Kurt sat in with a blank expression on his face and his eyes obediantly on the floor.
Kurt looked back at Patricia with a raised eyebrow. "Is that so?"
Cinna leaned in towards Kurt while others joined in on gossip on the change in the Hunger Games rules this year. Kurt wasn't paying any attention to them. "Personally, I seen no use for Avoxes. I pity them too much," Cinna murmured to Kurt.
So Kurt wasn't the only one. "Why does every conversation revolve around either the Avoces or the Hunger Games?" Kurt murmured in return.
"Well when you become a fashion designer for as long as they have, fashion talk becomes boring," replied Cinna. "We Capitol people have nothing better to talk about but gossip, Avoxes, and the Hunger Games."
"...District 11 rebelled last year. Who's to say no one else will this year?" Willten, District 1's designer for the female tribute was asying.
Kurt turned his attention to him. "Wait, what?"
The designers all looked at each other before they looked at Kurt.
"You didn't know about District 11?" Cinna asked in a state of mellowed shock.
Everyone at the whole table laughed, causing Kurt to blush with embarassment.
"What about District 11?" Kurt asked back.
"When Rue, the femal tribute from District 11, was killed last year, there was an uprising. The Capitol had to send in extra Peacekeepers to control them. District 11 is basically in ruins, didn't you know?" asked Shayma, District 4's designer for the male tribute.
"My tributes have no chance of winning," shimed in Harold, District 11's designer for the female tribute.
"No, remember? Kurt still lived in District 8 last year," Patricia quickly said.
Kurt felt so missplaced right now. He sunk down farther in his chair and sighed. When he looked at the clock, he quickly got to his feet. "As must as I'd love to stay and...chat some more, I need to get back to my shop," said Kurt in a voice dripping with sarcasm.
The only person who got up was Cinna, who shook hands with kurt with a warm smile. "We're thankful we were able to get your help for tonight. Take care, Kurt."
Kurt smiled back at him. "Thank you, you too."
And with that, Kurt shoved his books and box of fabric swatches into Blaine's hands as calmly as possible so he could just get to the elevator. He couldn't wait to get out of there. He felt so crowded...like he was an outcast who didn't belong there.
When the elevator doors closed, Kurt sighed and slumped back against the elevator wall, decended more that a hundred floors. "I feel so pathetic," Kurt said to Blaine. Blaine looked over at Kurt and gave him an apologetic look. The face that Blaine was basically giving Kurt a worried puppy-dog look made him just want to gather him in his arms and hug him until he felt better. "I'll never fit in here," Kurt then said as he looked away.
Blaine put a hand on Kurt's forearm, squeezing it lightly until Kurt looked back at him. Kurt cracked a soft smile, thankful that Blaine cared.
And then the elevators opened. Blaine quickly took his hand away and bowed his head towards the floor as Kurt straightened up. Another Avox stood before him. Kurt quickly looked at Blaine to find his eyes widened. Blaine was looking at the other Avox. The other Avox's eyes stared back at Blaine with a mirrored expression.
Kurt looked back at Blaine again. "You two know each other?"
