Finn banged on the window until Kurt rolled it down. His brother glared at him impatiently, a strange mix of annoyance and something bright on his face. The boy looked anxiously out the window, tapping his fingers against the dashboard as he spoke.
"What do you want Finn? I have to go!"
Finn shook his head. There was no way he was letting his brother out in that storm.
"You can't drive in his storm! You'll get hit by a car or run off the road or hit by lightning! "
The countertenor rolled his eyes and began to roll up the windows despite Finn's protests.
"I have to talk to Blaine. This isn't up for discussion. Bye, Finn."
And with that, Kurt pulled out of the driveway and into the storm. Finn watched as the Navigator's lights slowly faded into the dark before trudging back inside and changing into dry clothes.
He sat down on the side of his bed and stared out the window, hoping that Kurt was OK.
Whatever had made him leave had better have been worth it.
. . .
Kurt swerved to avoid a tree, cursing under his breath. He couldn't see ANYTHING in the storm, just sheets of rain. There was no way he could make it back to Dalton tonight, at least not without the very real possibility of getting into a car crash. The best thing to do now, Kurt decided, would be to just pull over and wait until morning.
He carefully maneuvered the car off the road and reclined the seat back until it was practically horizontal. He had plenty of gas, so heating wouldn't be a problem.
What was bugging Kurt was the issue of what he would say to Blaine. He couldn't just waltz into Blaine's room and proclaim his feelings. It would be...awkward. And embarrassing. And too blunt. He really wanted to try and romance him, make him feel special.
Kurt grinned to himself and pulled out a CD from inside the dashboard. As he twirled it around in his hands, humming the melody softly, he knew that the song he was thinking of would be perfect.
Especially if Sebastian had already gotten to Blaine.
. . .
Kurt woke up early the next morning just as the sun came out. It was still raining, but at least now he could see the road, which was better than last night at least. He pulled out onto the road once more and drove straight to the nearest gas station. When the the tank was full, he plugged in his long dead phone to charge. Surprisingly, he had almost twelve missed calls from Dave.
It was almost another hour before Kurt stopped for breakfast at a deserted grocery store. As soon as he was back in his car with his purchase-a carton of strawberries-he called Dave back. Kurt pressed the phone against his ear and waited for the other boy to pick up. As the phone rang, Kurt hummed through his song, practicing for the big performance at Dalton.
"Kurt?"
He heard Dave's voice crackle through the speaker, obviously tired. Kurt could tell he hadn't gotten much sleep last night.
"Yeah, I saw you tried to call me last night. Is everything alright?"
Dave sighed.
"I just wanted to talk about something. Bl-"
Kurt cut him off as he started to pull out of the parking lot.
"Can it wait just a little longer? I have to do something. Plus I'm driving. "
"No, that's fine. I don't want you to crash. We can talk later. "
That little trickle of guilt curled up again in the pit of Kurt's stomach.
"Bye David. "
"Bye Kurt. I love you. "
Kurt hung up.
