Thanksgiving was different for those in the Hudson-Hummel house this year. This year was the first year the family sat down for a real dinner; last year around this time there was a wedding that needed planning so dinner was kind of skipped over. But this year Kurt Hummel was not cooking alone for two. He was in a new house with a family of four to feed as well as some added guests; not to mention he had an extra pair of hands provided by his stepmother Carole. The preparation for the meal started on Tuesday after glee club. Rachel, Finn, Kurt, and Blaine gathered at the Hudson-Hummel home to go over what would be made by whom and what time Kurt expected them to be at the house.
When the teenagers walked into the house Finn made his way to the couch immediately to turn on the highlights from last night’s football game, while the other three made their way to the kitchen. Kurt went straight for the pantry to start his list of what he needed and what he had. Rachel and Blaine walked over to the kitchen table and sat down watching their best friend and boyfriend, respectively, run around the kitchen like a chicken with his head cut off.

“Rachel I know you are a vegan, so is there anything that you will be bringing or need me to make specifically for you?” Kurt asked with his head inside a cupboard looking for his mother’s recipe book.
“Here it is!” he shouted as he found it.
“I’ll be bringing a pasta dish with me as well as some latkes. The Italian Jew in me will be ever present this holiday season,” she answered with a bright smile across her face.
“Okay,” Kurt smiled and rolled his eyes, “Blaine, honey, what about you?” he asked making his way over to his boyfriend and seating himself in his lap, wrapping his arms around his neck.
Blaine wrapped his arms around his boyfriend’s waist as he placed a light kiss in the crook of his neck.
“I’m okay with whatever you cook baby,” he answered with his cancer-curing smile.
Kurt couldn’t help but swoon a bit.
“But is there anything specific you want me to make you?”
“Well I know Thanksgiving is the one time you will be allowing your father to enjoy salty, fatty food so I just want that and well… we will discuss dessert later,” he said, winking at Kurt
Kurt smiled and bent down a bit to place a kiss on his boyfriend’s lips.
“You’re spending the night right?” he whispered in Blaine’s ear as he pulled away from his face.
Blaine nodded in reply. The pair was staring into each other’s eyes for a long while before the clearing of a throat made them both snap their gaze up to meet Rachel’s happy smile and loving look.
“So are we just going to sit around and talk all day or are we going to get prepping for this dinner?” Rachel asked in her peppy voice.
Blaine and Kurt nodded their heads with bright smiles on their faces as they got up from their chair. Blaine stole a quick kiss and then got to work.

Dinner was amazing. The turkey was perfect, all the sides were done at the same time, everything was finished and everyone was on time. The table had been brought to life with the telling of embarrassing family stories, tons of bad jokes, and laughs. Carole, Rachel, and Kurt cleaned all the dishes as Burt and Finn watched the ongoing game and Blaine stood in the doorway of the kitchen smiling as his boyfriend gossiped with his stepmother and best friend about the latest glee club drama. Kurt could feel his boyfriend’s watchful eye as he pranced around the kitchen putting the dried dishes away. He teased him, bending over and wiggling his ass for only Blaine to see. He knew he was driving his boyfriend crazy, but man was it fun.
Once all the dishes were put away Rachel and Finn left to go spend some time with Rachel’s dads or so they said, Burt and Carole retired to their bedroom for the night, thus leaving Kurt and Blaine alone. They made their way to Kurt’s room and lay down on the bed. They stared at each other for a while just memorizing the other’s face. Every line, every twitch of a nose or bat of eyelashes, they wanted to remember it all.

“You are perfect,” Blaine whispered as he leaned forward to kiss his boyfriend.
They pulled away a little dizzy from the overwhelming love they felt with just a simple kiss.
“You are the most beautiful person I have ever laid eyes on,” Blaine continued.
“You have my mother to thank for that I suppose.” Kurt smiled as he thought fondly of her and the little Thanksgiving memories he had time to make with her.
“Oh that reminds me,” Blaine began, “it is a holiday and I was wondering if I could possibly go with you tomorrow to finally meet her?” he asked, worry ever present in his voice.
Kurt loved shopping. It was his favorite stress reliever. Though on the busiest shopping day of the year, Kurt always found himself in the cemetery, a single lily in hand, chatting with someone who to any outsider could see obviously wasn’t there but to Kurt he knew his mother was around. Black Friday was his day with his mom to catch her up on how school was going and how Thanksgiving had gone over. Last year he had told her about Blaine and about how Blaine was helping him with the bullying. Kurt felt as though she was happy he had found someone, which is why the day they made their relationship official Kurt had come to tell her about it. Though throughout the time that Blaine and he have been dating he has never introduced Blaine to his mother. At the time he wasn’t ready, he still wasn’t ready for it.

“No,” Kurt answered softly.
Blaine sat up, eyes looking forward, away from his boyfriend. Kurt just lay there, studying his boyfriend’s face, waiting for him to break the silence.
“Why not?” Blaine asked in a stern voice, eyes shifting to stare at Kurt.
Kurt froze at the tone of his voice. Why did this seem like such a big deal to him? Why did he want to meet his mother? Kurt wanted Blaine to meet her; he just wasn’t ready to let Blaine see him in that emotional state yet. He was scared that once Blaine saw the way he was around his mother he would think he was crazy and leave. Kurt was still silent.
“Why can’t I go with you?” Blaine asked still awaiting an answer.
Kurt sat up and sighed, his eyes falling to his lap looking at his shaking hands.
“Blaine, it’s not that I don’t want you to meet her it’s just-” but before Kurt could finish Blaine had gotten up and put his jacket and shoes on.
“Where are you going?” Kurt asked.
“You’re scared,” he said pausing before he asked what was really on his mind. “Do you really think that low of me?”
Kurt gasped. He was irritated.
“What do you mean?!” Kurt screamed.
“You won’t give me an answer! I feel like I’ve told you everything there is to know about me but you hide a part of your life from me! You hide your mother and any feelings you have toward her from me! I feel like you don’t talk about her because you think I will judge you or run and if that’s the case Kurt well I’m glad to know you think so low of me.” Blaine turned around and walked out of Kurt’s room.
Kurt sat there for a minute. Blaine really was honest with him. How could he think Blaine would leave him if he was being honest and sharing everything with him?
Kurt felt stupid. He couldn’t let Blaine leave thinking he thought so badly of him.
Blaine had almost made it to the door when he was grabbed by the arm. He turned around to be faced with the sight of Kurt with tears welling up in his eyes.
“Don’t leave. Please,” Kurt begged.
Blaine couldn’t stay. Not when he knew his boyfriend didn’t trust him enough to be one hundred percent honest with him. It hurt him to think that Kurt would think he would leave him if he opened up completely. He needed time to think and calm down.
“I can’t stay, not when you don’t trust me.” Blaine slipped out of Kurt’s grasp and walked out the door.
Kurt couldn’t say anything. He felt as though his heart had been ripped out of his chest. He did trust Blaine. He wanted Blaine to meet his mother. He was just scared and his fear had just fucked him over. Blaine was upset with him. He had every right to be. Kurt was being stupid and he hated himself. He went back to his room, changed into his pajamas, and crawled into bed. As his head hit the pillow he finally let the tears fall. How could he have been so stupid? How could he let himself believe that Blaine would judge him so harshly? He couldn’t stop the tears. He thought of his mother. He wished she were here. He would have to wait until tomorrow to tell her about this, but even then it wouldn’t be the same as if she were here now to hold him and tell him everything will be all right. He needed her. He needed Blaine too. His eyes drifted shut as tears continued to roll down his face.

It was freezing in his room. He rolled over trying to find the body that was supposed to be there to snuggle into but instead was faced with the colder half of his bed. Kurt opened his eyes to be faced with the blinding light pouring in from his open blinds. He turned his head toward the bathroom as he rubbed his eyes. No one was there.

“Blaine?” he asked in a raspy voice.

He was wondering why his throat hurt so much and why his eyes were irritated. Then he remembered last night. Blaine left him. He left because Kurt’s fear of him leaving made it a reality. Blaine had left thinking Kurt didn’t trust him, which wasn’t true in the slightest. Kurt wanted Blaine to come with him today to finally meet his mother. He couldn’t hide that part of him from the one person in his life that mattered most. Kurt reached for his phone on the nightstand. No new messages or missed calls. Blaine had every right to be mad at him for what he did, but a part of him was expecting it to be over by now. He would let Blaine have the time to think. When Blaine was ready Kurt was sure he would hear from him, but until then he would just wait it out.
He got up and yawned as he stretched. Making his way toward the bathroom he stopped in his tracks. He heard something he hadn’t heard in years: a soft voice pouring in through his door from what seemed to be the kitchen. He shook his head, thinking it was just his mind playing tricks on him, but when his head stopped shaking and was focused again he heard the song once more. He walked over to his bedroom door. He peeked his head around the corner where he saw the shadow of a woman in the kitchen. He forced his body out of his room to stand in the hall. The voice got louder as he got closer to the kitchen. He reached the doorway and his jaw hit the floor.
There standing by the sink stirring what seemed to be a bowl of pancake mix was a tall slender woman. She had a familiar shade of chestnut brown hair, a pair of unforgettable hips, legs that were miles long and a voice that made everything else in the world sound like nails on a chalkboard. She turned around still singing to herself.

The phone rings in the middle of the night
My mother says, "When you gonna live your life right?"
Well, mother dear, we're not the fortunate ones
Oh girls, they wanna have fun
Oh girls, they...

The slower arrangement of the old Cyndi Lauper classic was perfect for her. He stood there listening, taking in the smooth voice he hasn’t heard in years. His eyes drifted shut. This has to be a dream. It can’t be real. The voice stopped.

“Kurt honey, are you okay?” she asked.
His eyes snapped open. She was looking at him with a pair of familiar blue gray eyes. He couldn’t look away from her. He wanted this to be real, needed it to be real. He could feel his eyes start to pool with tears. He watched as she set the bowl of mix on the counter top and rushed over to him, pulling him into her arms.
“Kurt honey I’m right here. It’s alright,” she said with an overwhelming amount of love in her voice.
As she rubbed calming circles into his back he buried his face in the crook of her neck. He took in the deep smell of her memorable perfume. He didn’t want her to let go. He felt a sob trying to creep its way up his throat but before it could escape he spoke.

“Mom,” he whispered.
