Kurt and Blaine Hummel-Anderson were not expecting twins.
They were not expecting to fall in love with Jamie, a beautiful 18-year-old girl with short blonde hair who looked ready to pop at only five months.
They were not expecting her to say yes. Yes, Mr. and Mr. Hummel-Anderson. Yes, you can raise my babies.
Their dream for the past three years was finally coming true. On their fifth wedding anniversary, over champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries, in their third floor walk-up in downtown Boston, they decided to start the adoption process. Blaine wanted to adopt a newborn. He wanted the full experience of fatherhood. Who was Kurt to deny his husband that beautiful dream?
That is how they ended up here, in the maternity ward at Boston Medical Center, awaiting the arrival of their twin boys.
Blaine is a nervous wreck, pacing the waiting room floor, checking his watch, peering worriedly down the hall. Kurt internalizes his anxiety for Blaine’s sake, though he gave up trying to calm him down two hours ago. Instead, he sits typing text messages to family and friends. Our boys still aren't here yet.
Another hour passes, and Kurt makes a quick trip to the cafeteria for coffee and sandwiches.
Five hours after they arrived at the hospital with Jamie, Nurse Sara opens the door. “Mr. and Mr. Hummel-Anderson? Congratulations! Two healthy baby boys were born at 10:59 pm. The mother is fine and resting. Would you like to come see your sons?”
Sara leads them down the hallway and stops in front of a large window. She points to the front row, where two babies wrapped in blue blankets are sleeping peacefully next to each other, their skin pink and flushed.
“That’s them!” she says with a smile. “Wait here a moment and I will take you in and let you hold them,” Sara says before she walks away.
“Kurt,” Blaine chokes out. “Kurt, look at them. They’re...”
“Perfect,” Kurt finishes. “Absolutely perfect.”
Later, when they are sitting in Jamie’s hospital room, both men holding one of their sons, Sara inquires about names.
Blaine looks to Kurt, who smiles knowingly and nods.
“This little guy is Oliver Lucas Hummel-Anderson,” Blaine states proudly. “And that is Owen Blake Hummel-Anderson.”
